Dear Anthony, Thanks for your instructive video’s. In previous versions of Camera Raw, you could select a new standard aspect ratio. Unfortunately this was changed recently. I hoped that this could now be changed back in adjusting the presets of ACR. Following the instructions of your video I tried to change the default aspect ratio to the one that I always use (16 x 9), but was unsuccessful. I wonder whether this cannot be done this way or whether I did something wrong. Regards, Fred Hoorn, The Netherlands

I notice that there was no thumbnail preview for the NEF file before you dragged it into PS, yet the Nikon Z7ii/Z6ii are listed by Apple as being ‘compatible’ with the latest IOS. I now have recent folders of blank icon thumbnails - iMac, Big Sur - whereas pre 7ii/6ii days I had actual previews. Any thoughts?

Thanks . As for ‘camera settings’ of the in camera profiles . I thought that for all cameras the in camera profiles only affect the JPEG’s ...which seems to indicate that if a person chose ‘camera settings’ they are asking for the raw to be read by ACR to be as per the jpeg ?

This is a little confusing because even though they share a "camera profile" label, in-camera settings for camera profile work differently than post-processing software settings for camera profile. In Adobe Camera Raw (or Lightroom), you can set a camera profile such as "Camera Landscape" or "Camera Portrait," during or after import, if offered for your body in ACR/LR, and that is at least temporarily (you can undo it) applied to the sliders adjusting your Raw image and changes its look in ACR/LR. You can test this for yourself. If you set your body to "Canon Portrait" and then set ACR/LR Import to "Camera Landscape," ACR/LR ignores the setting for Canon Portrait (as you suggest, ACR/LR doesn't pay attention to an in-camera profile setting for a Raw image), so ACR/LR applies and displays the setting for Camera Landscape. You can always change the profile setting in ACR/LR to a different profile after importing. Doing this removes any earlier setting and applies only the latest profile setting, which again can be changed later. It's best to apply ACR/LR profiles early in processing; applying or changing them late in editing rearranges some of your other slider settings, in a way you may not want at that point. You also lose the option to apply a profile (other than Color vs. Monochrome) in LR or PS once you "Edit in" (export the image to a third-party app such as Topaz DeNoise or Luminar), so apply the profile first if you want to edit the image with a third-party app in addition to LR or PS. The other info in your question is correct. If you set your camera body to a profile such as "Landscape" or "Portrait," that only affects a JPG image--with one exception. Note that in-camera settings for camera profile also affect what you see on the camera LCD screen when images are played back there; Raw files have a JPG image embedded in them, even if you're not saving JPG, and this is what is displayed on your camera LCD screen or in your electronic viewfinder. So if you set a profile on your camera body, this changes that embedded JPG metadata and therefore changes what you see on the camera body LCD display... but the RAW image remains unchanged by that profile setting in-camera, as your question suggests. An ACR/LR profile is just a series of slider settings you can see after importing that can always be adjusted later. A profile can save you some work, if you always adjust groups of images with the same settings early on. And there's nothing wrong with applying a Portrait profile to a Landscape image, if that looks better to you.

Great vid 👍 could you please help me I am using Adobe raw 14.2 and have been using photoshop for around 15 yrs. But now for some reason when my image is over or under exposed I get the blue or red warnings on the screen but the little triangles on the top left and right of the histogram don't go white anymore. I have tried everything and I can't work it out. Any ideas? Keep up your good videos 😉

Thank you, this is helpful, because I think I did this accidentally once. Since a month or three, everytime I open Bridge, it applies automatically a stupid preset to ALL of the photo’s on the card. It slows the computer enormously and I don’t know why or how to fix it, but I have to undo it all manually in camera raw. I couldn’t find anything about this problem, but I’m gonna take a look if this is the answer.

Anthony I would like to update my camera raw from 9.1 to camera raw 13.1 but when I install 13.1 and open the nef file in photoshop cs6 it shows me that it is camera raw 9.1 again. Is there a way to update?

Love your videos but ou lost me on that one. I understand your goal but got lost in all the different options on the Camera Raw menu. I have tried to do this in Lightroom preferences for my Fujifilm X-T3 including the serial number. It seems everything is saved but if I go back and check it it has a Canon 1DX instead of the Fuji. I put in the Fuji again and next time I go back the Canon is back? Nuts!

But why in the world wouldn’t Adobe default to everything being zero’d out? Or at least offer a default profile that in zero’d out? To me, it’s like music and a Bose set equalization to enhance their headphones and did not offer a Flat setting. Making your own profile that has no adjustments, although easy, doesn’t make sense.

I don't know why Abode doesn't do that by default... it's a good question... but you can take what Anthony demonstrates in the video and use it to create a custom import profile where the sliders adjusted in "Adobe Color" are zeroed out, if that's what you want. Adobe Color would still get applied but then neutralized by the new slider settings below it. Save those zeroed-out settings into your new default import preset/profile.

@@sounderdavis5446 Thank you. I’m new to LR/PS and frustrated by this. I thought I was going crazy that sliders weren’t zero’d. I also find a similar frustration with them not resetting when you go to apply a mask. The Reset button in the panel doesn’t seem to zero the sliders and I have to reset them one by one. Am I doing something wrong?

  • @sounderdavis5446

First: You Are Not Crazy. (Even though Adobe can make you feel that way... and not just in this case, LOL...) Second: if I had more energy than I do at the moment, I'd test this out for you to be sure, but I think the Reset button only puts you back to that point *after* you've loaded the default profile (Adobe Color if you haven't changed it) and have not adjusted any other sliders. Try manually opening each slider that you can't see isn't set to zero, and double-clicking on the downward-facing-arrow so it zeroes out. Then save into a custom and totally neutral profile that you can apply either at import, or later, early in your post-production workflow, if that's your objective. (Why early? Because profiles work best when applied early on in post-production.) I am totally sympathetic to your gripe, that these sliders by default should load neutral/zero, or at the very least, should be easier to restore to neutral /AHEM Adobe/, but sometimes the best choice is to go with the flow and just do what saves time. /I have tried their competition, and still, I have to grudgingly acknowledge, the Adobe Photography subscription Plan is (at least for me), the best value and option.

@@sounderdavis5446 Thanks. I can do the work now that you and Anthony explained it. For Reset not to reset the sliders to zero is just silly. That Adobe profile should be constructed in the background. Come on Adobe.
