Adobe Changed How To Edit RAW Develop Defaults in Lightroom

When you import RAW files into Lightroom, Lightroom automatically does some preprocessing to your image. In this video, I demo how to edit that preprocessing so you have Lightroom handle the RAW file the way you want it handled.

I find it awesome that they give you a easier way to change the default processing now in Lightroom. There is still some significant issues that can have a huge effect on how you process a image and these issues are not easy to remove. Behind the scenes Adobe Provides a significant contrast curve that can lead users to think they have blown highlights that can no longer be recovered when in reality the actual raw of the image is not blown out. This is something you can't see in the sliders and to remove it you need to go through a rather convoluted process dance with Processing Versions and removing this baked in curve and contrast settings. The reason why it is everyone's first step is to pull back highlights and lift shadows is because of this overly aggressive tone curve. If you go through the process to remove this curve you never need to touch highlights and shadows sliders most of the time instead you just add a touch of contrast. Now this is not needed for every image sometimes their default is fine but right now I think the most significant change that could be made to Lightroom is for Adobe to provide a true Neutral Linear Raw profile so that people can get great results even faster.

Always enjoy your videos...well produced and informative. When the photo is imported is that a way to apply the auto setting to all photos (Develop>Basic>Tone>Auto) to create a better starting point? If I were not happy with that setting would I be able to go back to reset? Thanks again for the great videos.

Lightroom does all sorts of stuff to files . It actually applies a tone curve changing exposure and contrast but does not show this curve in the curves tab. If you go back to an older process version then and only then will it reveal this curve. Then if you zero everything you will finally see your actual exposure! Its madness but that's what happens. See Andy Astburys channel regarding his "process version swap".

Very important video. Just to clarify these only get applied on new imports correct? I already have a bunch of photos in my library and they've all been set to adobe color but I really want them to have my natural camera settings. After setting my present, do I have to go through each and every photo and click reset or reimport all my photos to have this new preset applied?

Thanks for this very useful info Anthony. I immediately checked LR and found the RAW default settings were applied to my recent imports! In the treatment/profile section drop down box, I don't seem to have an option for camera standard! Any idea why please? Also, do you know if images are treated the same way if you bypass LR and go from bridge to Camera RAW?
