    Thanks Matt for the tips! Some of these I didn't know that might be helpful later. I specifically built my PC to run Lightroom 😅- Did tons of research and found the components the operate the best with Lightroom haha and you know what, I haven't had any issues with it. The biggest difference for me was having an NVMe drive. I store my catalog and the previews on there, I render 1:1 previews for all my images. It doesn't take much time because they are being stored on the NVMe drive, import process is a LITTLE slower, but just grab a cup of a coffee :) Graphic cards are one of the biggest things for Lightroom I think. Running LR on a slow intergrated graphics really bottlenecks it.

    Why would anyone be ugly to Matt?! (Shame on them! )....... I was using a business class machine and struggling with Lightroom performance. I swapped to a higher-end windows machine with a good dedicated graphics card, turned off syncing and it was like the dawn of a new age. I rarely get any slow down, even when processing 54 MB to 120 MB raw files. To save on cost, I purchased a "last year's" model of a gaming laptop for a great price and it was worth every penny. I swapped to dedicated external hard drives (backed up) to help me organize my files, save on storage fees and eliminate sync/upload times. I had tried all the possible adjustments recommended on both the old machine and now the new one, and changing machines was the only thing that made a significant difference. You recommend this up front, and in my experience, it is makes post processing so much more enjoyable!

    One mystery I have is that LrC loads very quickly, but despite every screen working perfectly, there is a delay of about 1-2 minutes before the Develop tab has any previews or functionality in the right hand panel. I can load LrC and do an import and see all the images in the library but there is a sizeable delay in the Develop tab being available - not sure if anyone else gets this?

    Good video Matt. Picked up some things and even clicked on the more performance tips and find that I'm at min ram to run LR and PS at same time. So now I know to close PS when not using until next upgrade. have a question on Video cache Settings in performance section that I didn't see in the Adobe pages. Is max cace size ok a the 3gb default? I take some movies with my camera and store the files in the same files as the photos. Just easy to keep together. Pretty sure you've said you don't mess with these but maybe someone has a an idea? thanks

    I have an overbuilt gaming system and loading 100% views is still a 1-2 second delay. I'm ant IT professional and have tinkdered with every setting possible. The main architecture of LR needs to be redone. We're stuck with it until that happens. Unfortunately, I'm married to it. Even panning through images I just viewed at 100% are delayed. They are supposed to be cached.

    Thanks Matt. With the increasing power of LR there are fewer reasons to ever go into PS. So it is frustrating that Adobe do not allow users to set a specific drive for caching/scratch work like you can in PS. Even though I have over 20% space on my primary drive, panos, masks etc take way over that and LR then always defaults to using my slow spinning disk, which results in crashes, when I want it to use a faster attached SSD. Unless I am missing something, I think Adobe needs to improve this.

    I think I've got a single preset pack installed but I did have to kill about twenty tabs in my browser to get your video and Lightroom to play nice. 🤣 Good tip on the cache I've stepped that up to 20GB, in theory I did lose a little speed when I moved the catalog off my primary M.2 to a slightly slower but significantly larger M.2. My PC is getting old but is purpose built and easily upgradable, I need to move the music (on drive E: "Eugene") to an SSD.

    I’ve always been frustrated with embedded previews because for some reason they will not reliably show focus/sharpness at 1:1. On most photos it seems to work just like photomechanic but then sometimes I zoom in to check focus and the shot looks soft. However if I then switch to the develop module I can see that it’s actually tack sharp. This bug is very frustrating and it’s been present ever since embedded previews were first introduced years ago.

  • @MattKloskowski

    @MattKloskowski

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi. I don’t believe this is a bug, but the intended behavior of embedded previews, especially on a larger screen where more pixels are needed. For me, and my initial pass, I want to find the photos that resonate with me quickly, so this works. Generally, while shooting, I already know whether it was sharp and in focus from my shutter speed and seeing a “green” AF point around it. So for my first pass, I just judge based on look. After that, I’ll go through and check sharpness, etc… But everyone is different and if checking sharpness is the first thing you need to do because you’re not sure, then embedded may not be the way to go. Thanks!

  • @timk8258

    @timk8258

    @@MattKloskowski I’m a wedding photographer so I definitely need to check sharpness fairly often when shooting at 1.2, etc. However I still don’t see how it can be intended behavior. Isn’t it supposed to be pulling the embedded jpeg preview, the same one that Photomechanic uses? Because in PM I can zoom in to 1:1 on any photo and accurately judge sharpness. And furthermore I can do that in Lightroom using embedded previews on *most* photos. But then I randomly get some that look blurry at 1:1. The inconsistency is what makes me think it has to be a bug, I can’t imagine some of the previews being sharp and some blurry is intentional.

    Export them and add them back slowly to test this. Exporting everything to a new catalog may help too. Also, create another profile on your computer and see if that helps. Start with a basic catalog, and then try accessing your main catalog; after you back it up of course. ;)

    Hi Matt! I know this is not something you support, but I'm hoping someone else out there has experienced and solved the problem. I purchase an M1 MacBook Pro the first of the year and love it except all my external hard drives will spin down if not accessed for about 20-30 seconds. They don't disconnect, just spin down. As soon as the computer needs to access a file, they spin back up which slows down productivity since I store all my photos on an external hard drive. Apple support has been no help and won't acknowledge the problem. All my external hard drives work perfectly on my older desktop Mac. There are some KZread videos of others experiencing the problem and they suggest going into Terminal mode and changing the Disksleep setting, but I am a little concerned about that. I do have all the other battery and performance settings correctly set according to Apple. If anyone has any suggestions I would certainly appreciate them. Thanks Matt for another great video!!!

    Hi. That is incorrect. Even Adobe will tell you not to worry about the amount of photos in your catalog. Not to say it won't have any effect (I mean, what program with hundreds of thousands of photos wouldn't), but it's definitely not what slows LR "down the most" or even close to it.
