At that time I did that using an HDMI Extractor from Oehlbach. Worked well. Now I use the optical output from the TV to send the signals to the Dac. The eternal plugging in was annoying. For the PC and then to the Dac via USB I have the Portable Pioneer Blurayplayer BDR-XD07. A fantastic player.

I have used the same box as shown and this solution between my Oppo 105D and Pontus 2 dac .. it works and sounds better than the SPDIF connections direct from the Oppo 105 to the Pontus dac. There are a couple of points to note .. I2S does not have a standard for the pin allocations .. so dacs like the Pontus 2 which has the ability to alter the pins via selection on the front panel is a must. The Oppo 105D & the Pontus 2 connection over I2S was easy as the default pins allocation worked .. but other players/dacs my be different. Use the shortest hdmi cables that you can .. I used 30cm cables and use a reasonable quality cable. Also note that on my box and as mentioned on other sites on the web this box reverses the channel balance for SACD discs .. I tested this by listening to a hybrid cd/sacd and noted that this in fact happened. So my solution was to get a cable made with balanced ends from the pontus 2 to two RCA input ends into my intergrated amp .. one being made reversed .. Snake Oil cable USA .. this cable is mentioned on the Denafrips web site. So now it all works fine .. I just have to change the input selection on my amp when I play a SACD to get the correct stereo balance. Hope this information helps

It seems the most practical solution to link my old primare bd32 to my topping d90 (I2S dac). First things first. Oppo is still making high quality transport mechanisms for digital discs and my understanding is that it will continue to do so into the future. I have recently decided to buy a PS Audio Memory Player and DirectStream DAC and if you buy the two you can enjoy native I²S connectivity between them, so that all the clock, power supply and data lines are kept separate throughout rather than being multiplexed as with SPDIF. I'm hoping to have the units by Christmas.

@@anadialog I was referring to just the transport mechanism; that is, laser assembly and means of loading a disc, controlling the tray movement etc. No electronics. However a friend of mine now thinks that PS Audio might be obtaining the mechanisms from Denon-Marantz, but the video I saw definitely mentioned Oppo. I must also correct my comment about I²S as I don't think power supplies are involved - just the various clock signals and the digital audio data kept separate from one another.

Can you explain me something? If I have headphones with a frequency response over 40 kHz and I am playing a native dsd 256 file from a DAP which has only a frequency response up 20 kHz than what is the sense behind these dsd files if the player can't reproduce the sound above 20 kHz? Unfortunately DSD cannot go through coax (spdif) that's why a lot of people are using I2S or HDMI. In newer connections DSD64 can go via SPDIF as DoP but you need to ask Denafrips of their convert will accept dsd via coax.

Thanks for the tips..!!! The audio extractor & IIS are really good... The extractor u said that didnt work for is may because of the channels that the HDMI is actually carrying and the extractor is giving out to the DAC..!!! I think most of the DACs we use for hifi are stereo support only (2 channels) unlike the separate decoders that are available in AV receivers... For instance i always wanted to use my chord hifi dac for surround movies( i prefer to watch in headphones) but it wont do it.. which in other words to get the desired 3D effect that particular encoding is to supported by the DACs too... Anyway do u know any such devices which can really simulate that surround effect into stereo components like Headphones unlike just throwing the surround channels to the left and right of the headphones..!! (thats what yamaha AV reciever silent cinema does)

Hi, If you connect the blu ray player via spdif (rca) to your Edifiers you will have a decent CD quality but in PCM format. If you want to enjoy (as I did) Super Audio CDs, well you should upgrade to Edifier S3000Pro, with a decent DAC inside of them and with balanced inputs. I use a Sony UBP-X800M2 Blu Ray player as a mere cd transport, then I connected the dedicated HDMI (audio only output) to the "HDMI to I2S converter" and the I2S output connected to a S.M.S.L. DAC (external balanced DAC). Now I can enjoy the greatness of SACD with a affordable cost, without spending thousands of euros buyng a SACD hi-end player. Enjoy!

@@anadialog Interested by this video and having some sacds at home I tried connecting the small hdmi-> i2s converter to a basic Sony SACD blue ray player. Magic! The player actually sends via HDMI a DSD 64 signal which is then converted to i2s to the dac a sabaj d5. There was one detail, however, that was necessary for everything to work. Connecting the hdmi->i2s converter directly to the dac not only didn't show anything on the TV, but the audio signal to the dac couldn't get through either. I thought the reason for this might be either a fault in the Sony blu-ray player (and I still believe that part of the problem lies with the blu-ray player) or that the HDMI output of the Sony wasn't sending enough power to feed the converter. On the first reason I unfortunately cannot yet comment, not having tried a player of the same model , but on the second reason I am almost certain that, regardless of a possible defect in the player, that it was not sending enough power to the Dac and the TV. Adding an external power supply to the 5volt socket to supply power to the hdmi-i2s converter, the TV magically showed video signals and the dac received DSD audio signals. I wanted to send you my experience as it can hopefully be useful to many others. Thanks for giving me the idea! Thanks Anadialog!

  • @anadialog

    @anadialog

    3 жыл бұрын

They didn't and that is why we can do this. They never thought that someone could have extrapolated the highbres PCM and DSD signal from the HDMI cable, which in the past was used only for video + audio for the TV. No copyright protection there, but you need a different protocol to accept that signal in a DAC. Hence I2S. That is, at least, how 8 understand the situation.

If you have an Oppo 95/105/205, save your money the DACs inside are pretty much state of the art. If you have an older player or one without a truly high quality DAC (anything that can play the format) and just send the bits to an external DAC. The real exception might be if you want to stay digital to do some Room Correction or other signal alternation, like advanced bass management. Outputting from the great DAC's of the likes of the Oppo's to high quality analogue, to then go through a ADC to do the minipulaiton which will almost always need to be done digitally, and then back through that devices DAC back to analogue, out to your pre/power amps. Each conversion form DAC -> ADC -> DAC may introduce noticeable artifacts or reduce dynamic range, raise the noise floor etc. There are a few stereo receivers/preamps/integrated amps that take HDMI or Stereo HDMI DACs that take HDMI, but not all support SACD, generally only PCM. In those cases the quality of converting from DSD to PCM inside your player and then sending them to the DAC is maybe an area for debate, and may happen automatically/transparently when using HDMI. The same with playing multichannel tracks, DD/DTS encoded or otherwise to a stereo HDMI DAC (that are without the required codecs), down conversion or just playing an available stereo track may be happening automatically from the player.

You mention one of the issues i'm currently having. I was using a McIntosh MX150 preamp for it's RoomPerfect correction, but it's always doing converting on every input including analog. I have a Denafrips Ares II that i can tell doesn't sound the same connected to the MX150. The analog sound of the r2r dac is gone. It doesn't sound bad at all, but sounds more digital. So i am testing a Pathos Cinema X all analog tube preamp. Obviously from here, i can just keep my Ares II or upgrade to I2S dac and use the Denafrips Iris and i'll have full i2s set up(PC music only). I am not sure i want to go this route due to reliability. Macs are tanks and last forever. If i were to add a ModWright Tube modded Oppo 105 to the MX150, do you think that could overcome the digital conversions inside the MX150 before returning to analog signal and give me that analog sound i seek? Thanks

@@HailKingCeezer I don't know anything about analogue was digital sound, nor tubes. The stock audiophile oppos were both well regarded, well reviewed and when their analogue outputs were analysed the output they gave had higher fidelity (I. E. Analogue Output was much closer to the digital input) than any multichannel receiver or processor you can pretty much buy. So I wouldn't see the need to mod them, any addition would likely be marginal and there is a risk of deminising the the thing it already does so well. The only downside to using the oppo for its DACs either direct to power amps or a preamp that is entirely in the analogue domain, is depending on the oppo it is a source device only and doesn't have inputs, so any features e.g. room correction etc that aren't already in the oppo may be missed. The lower sound quality of other equipment may be traded off for ease of use, quality of life or room correction having a larger positive effect even with a lower fidelity base over a much higher base with stock sound that the room destroys. Of course ultimately it's your money and your device/hobby if you find something sounds better to you go for it.

Do you think i would be better off selling any external DAC, and investing in a DDC like the Denafrips Gaia or Iris to take my PC usb, clean the signal and convert to-say AES into the McIntosh MX150(no usb digital in) and just give the built in DAC of the MX150 the best sound i can give it? The Pathos 6ch Analog Tube Pre i have on loan is clearly of better quality for music. Far superior solid state amp and the tube pre makes all my digital music sound pleasant combined with the r2r dac. The issue is, i integrate movies. the MX150 with room perfect sounds far superior for movies-and not too bad at all with music-just more digital which my Klipsch speakers sometimes don't like. The Mac is much more reliable and easy to repair. This Pathos already needed costly repair, shipped to NY from Tx. Akready showing me a problem with the digital numbers. The Tube's also heat up my small room and make it uncomfortably hot, The Mac stays relatively cool in comparison. Sorry for the rant, i'm just searching every avenue toward a satisfactory best of both worlds situation-and i dont' want to spend unnecessary money. Thanks.

However, as you also mentioned not all the DAC has HMDI input connection, so I will have to connect from the output of the converter either a SPDIF or Coaxial cable to the DAC input, if this is the case, are we going to lose quality in the sound? I have the MOON 280D DAC. Thanks for your response.

I'm not sure i understand exactly. Say you have a Modwright Tube Modded Oppo 105, by going HDMI out to i2s IN on the device, and HDMI out from device to I2s DAC, you're bypassing the tube outputs that were costly mods and using the other DAC? This solution is only if you don't want to use the built in Oppo dac? Another question. I mainly listen to PC audio via foobar-usb to Denafrips Ares II. I use USB and am also considering adding the Denafrips Iris which has I2S out. How would i use the device in this scenario? My PC GPU(graphics card has HDMI out). For the first question the answer is yes, the tubes are not used fpr the external conversion. The second has a lot of stuff. I can only say that this device requires an HDMI output at the source and a I2S on the DAC's input. The box does the conversion from one protocol to the other in the digital domain. That is it!

My sincere congratulations on your site which is very useful to me. You convinced me to purchase SKW OCC copper cables. I have made the latest upgrade to my system which includes an OPPO 103 player, a Denafrips Ares 2 DAC, a Hegel H190 amplifier and Focal Aria 926 speakers. I often listen in 24 bits / 96kHz, but my preference is the DSD format which I read from files purchased on HDtracks, NativeDSD and formerly Acoustics sound. I also listen to SACDs. Here are some questions: 1. My DSD files are read by my Asus computer and the JRiver Media Center 28 software via a 1.5m usb-A / usb-B SKW cable connected to the Denafrips. This carries the decoded signal by xlr wires to my Hegel. Is this the right material to take advantage of my files? 2. By connecting the coaxial output of the Oppo 103 to the coaxial input of my Denafrips dac, the Oppo will directly send the digital signal of the 16-bit CDs to my dac which will decode them and bypass the dac of the Oppo. This is it? 3. If I play a SACD disc through my Oppo 103, will it route the digital signal through the coaxial socket in DSD or PCM? 4. How do I get the most out of SACDs and my Denafrips dac without compromising playback of regular 16-bit discs? Thank you very much for your precious help. My audiophile listening will be greatly improved.

I have the old Oppo BDP-83 player, I am using it as a transport for my SACDs and of course, could not get the native DSD signal to my Denafrips Ares II DAC, which was a bummer, as I don't care much for the Oppo internal DAC... So, what to do? I bought the GeerFab D.BOB (Digital Break Out Box). Pricey at $1000 US, but it works. I tried one of the Chinese models with no luck, so I pulled the trigger on this ridiculously priced GeerFab unit. Was it worth it? Hell yes! I now get that native DSD signal out to my Ares II DAC, and what a game changer. Everything sounds better in a good clean and clear natural way. Even the normal CD recordings sound more detailed, tightened up with deeper bass and clear midrange, the female voice sounds incredible, even on ripped recordings of a questionable source. I noticed the difference in sound quality immediately upon adding it into my system. The bass was really brought to a new level, as were the instruments, there was noticeable separation in a good way, I believe the way the engineer intended it to sound. Everything was just better, and it is all done in an unadulterated way. If you have an above average system I would recommend this pricey alternative. That is, if you are a plug and play and then forget about it kind of guy or gal. If your goal is to simply get a clean DSD recording directly to your DAC and had no luck with cheaper alternatives, get this box if you can afford it. If you enjoy ripping files and playing around with computer gear, and have the time to do all of that, I would pass and stick to what you are doing.

Here’s my easy solution: First I download hi-res ALAC files and place them in iTunes Library. Then I play via laptop to usb DAC (OPPO-205) to Pre-Pro. That’s it. Now, multi-channel pleasure can be an ordeal to get from FLAC downloads to Pre-Pro, since my Pre-Pro is pre HDMI. So far, I have found only two solutions which deliver gaplessly. One is to put the multi-channel music on a thumb drive and play it via OPPO, or burn a DATA DVD and play it via the OPPO. The thumb drive delivers the best results yet requires about 16 laptop, TV remote, and OPPO remote actions to download and play a music purchase. Now, of course I can play multi-channel FLAC files from foobar 2000 via HDMI to OPPO but it is not glitch or dropout free.

Buy an HDMI pre-pro or receiver and enjoy stereo and multi/channel SACD. The only issue is digitally recording SACD to get the music into computer library; but, what’s the point of that? To play that file from whatever music player is on your computer requires about 16 actions no matter how you are getting the files out of the computer to DAC: usb, S/PDIF, or HDMI. It’s much more convenient to play SACDs via a Sony Universal Player’s HDMI output to an HDMI Pre-Pro or A/V Receiver, especially multichannel, which needs bass management.

My understanding: the HDMI which has been used extensively in the A/V world will only provide at max, CD quality "digital" audio. It will never provide the DSD layer from a multi-format player where the HDMI out is a digital composite of audio and video signal. The only players that have a dedicated i2S output (which can be either HDMI cable based or CAT wire based) that can output the full DSD layer from a Super Audio CD must incorporate both an encryption that matches the decription on the DAC side. This was achieved early on by PS Audio with their CD player/transport. If you look at their current $6K SACD player, you will noticed that their i2S output only works with their own DAC,-thats because the encryption has to be maintained from the transport to the DAC, this is the agreement that was made with Sony in order to allow for the DSD layer to even leave a transport. All of the various converters that you've mentioned are only different ways of converting and moving the same low res audio format that you'd get from Toslink or SPDIF outputs of CD players.

Incorrect. HDMI carries quad rate DSD from my Sony SACD player via HDMI to my Bryston BDA-3 DAC without any converters or other additional hardware. The current line of Sony players (700,800,900) all have HDMI video AND audio outputs. A suitable DAC like the BDA-3 that has HDMI inputs will receive that signal with the only requirement being an HDMI cable. This is why I chose the Bryston. I also feed the BDA-3 via HDMI from my PC. Same deal. The issue of CD quality HDMI out from most multi format lies in the source; the SACD player. If not licensed for high res output by Sony, as most multi format players are will rely on the DSD signal being converted to CD quality by the player’s internal DAC. It’s not a limitation of HDMI not being able to carry the signal. HDMI carries DSD fine with no need for repeaters up to something like 30 or 40 feet. The limitation comes from the manufacturer not paying Sony their fee for the proprietary tech that enables the player to output DSD legally. Patent & copy rite BS.

@@gregNFL looking at the spec for both the Bryston and the latest batch of Sony' CD/DVD/SACD players one doesn't get the full picture . Even if Bryston is getting 4x DSD it is still not getting straight i2s from the Sony players - that requires an i2S input and Bryston does not appear to have any.. The HDMI will send hi-res audio, higher than a CD(I stand corrected), but I wonder whether its the true DSD layer of the SACD. I'm curious, when you play a regular CD only(not SAD) on your Sony player and select the HDMI input, does your Bryston show that its decoding a DSD signal?

@@HoomanR17 The Bryston gets pure DSD from Sony’s proprietary technology via HDMI. I2S not relevant. If a CD redbook signal is sent to the Bryston it is received 44/16 but I use a higher quality transport for CD. Other manufacturers have the ability to use the Sony DSD tech but have to pay Sony licensing fees for the privilege. There is reluctance to do that apparently because the common work-around is I2S. PS Audio a good example of that. I lament the Sony of old. When they had actual Sony Stores in the wild they were peak Sony and made some really good kit. They are a mere shell of their former self in todays audiophile world. To attest, check the used market for prices on early Sony SACD & CD players. Astounding. Technics is making a re-entry to hifi and I hope Sony does too. I’d line to get a Sony DSD capable player with more attention paid to the transport. The 700-900 players are not well built but they do send pure DSD. Hope that helps.

@@anadialog Did some digging and I feel I have as many questions as I have answers. You may have seen this video by Paul McGowan of PSAudio .. here is the link kzread.info/dash/bejne/qa6pm7yOgtW7iJs.html .. Here you'll see that Paul is stating that their SACD transport and that of DCS, perhaps others by now, allow for the raw digital DSD bits from the SACD layer to be sent directly to their own DAC via an encrypted I2S link. He also states that the DSD sent via HDMI(such as from Oppo or Sony player to Bryston DAC) has to be decrypted by a Sony chip that also does the D/A conversion. If it was just a matter of receiving DSD over traditional HDMI, I sense PS Audio would have done it and in this video Paul would not have taken the time to explain why they had to do it this way.. If you were to look at an Esoteric SACD transport, they too have a proprietary connection that only works with their own DAC. In your situation with the EBAY Device, I have low confidence that it has the Sony SACD decryption and D/A converter, if they did, they would have advertised it but it looks like it just converts HDMI audio signals to i2S. Certainly makes me wonder what exactly its getting from the HDMI signal.
