I've been curious about this for years and comparing notes. I'm a cosmetologist and I see a lot of conflicting information within the industry and education. One thing that really hit me recently was the realization that healthy hair is more resistant to water and dries faster. The more moisture the more damage in that case so ideally conditioned hair is technically dry. The 'Dry' feeling, brittle, damaged hair is like a sponge and soaks up more water and the strands inflate and expand which is not good especially with processed hair or people who wash too much or aggressively. I study hair function and behaviour and the function and risk associated with ingredients in topical formulations and oils. The way I understand oil and products to behave with water in a relationship with hair all has to do with pH and the kind of oil. Hair and skin sits around 4-5 acidity on the pH scale which is ideal to try to maintain. Water sits at 7 (Neutral) and certain shampoos, for example, considered stronger around 9 or so. Conditioner can be as low as 3 to 5 pH. I think certain oils like can be useful to help repel water from soaking into the hair while washing as well as protect from some cleansers. Some oils are better at penetrating the hair strand like coconut has an amino structure that is small enough but some people don't like it's possible comedogenic risk of cogging pores so I would use it maybe as a wash out treatment to prevent protein loss from washing. And oil like Vaseline, mineral oil and some silicones have an amino structure that is too large and bulky to penetrate hair but sometimes good ingredients for skin. Oil treatments on the scalp should be washed off to avoid issues. Oils I think of as a good leave on for hair and skin would be jojoba or argan

  • @afroindia42

Good points. I think it’s important for people to understand the porosity of their hair. I learned mine as a loose natural (seven years worth) before I locked. High porosity hair absorbs moisture quickly but it also leaves hair just as quickly because the cuticles are always raised. What’s worked for me is after washing, rinse with cold water to close the hair shaft, then spray water/aloe Vera juice mixture following olive oil. If I apply oil on my hair after it’s dry, it doesn’t absorb and my hair doesn’t feel moisturized at all.

  • @KrisMcDred

I like what you said. You understand your hair needs. Mine has to be dry because my scalp becomes itchy if I oil it wet. And even more itchy if I don't oil. The rose water, aloe Vera water, rise water are all commercial products. Normal water with your oil will do good. Or a good mist.

I am starting my loc journey next week so just trying to understand proper care methodology. Also with washing your hair, the scales will open up en take some water in. This is when your hair is at its weakest. So for people without locks, a very bad time to brush. And for people with dreads, no Palm rolling, or putting in greasy stuff. You will seal in the water between the scales and damage the hair. So make sure your hair is dry and then scarcely put in some soft oils every once in a while to make the hair scales stay healthy... again... like bamboo in the breeze 🎋

@@KrisMcDred I believe I lost the post. That’s weird.?. any way, I explained that your hair has scales. It is like nails and skin.. when this dries out it can get damaged and brittle. Waters dries it out... so it needs the right oils to stay flexible. Like bamboo in the wind.. so I recommend using oils like baby oil ore aloë oil... never put it on wet hair. When you just use water and soap, the skales will become brittle. When wet, the scales stay open. When drying, the settle back down... sometimes fragile hair has difficulty settling down. Water gets in between the scales. So yes, hair can hold moisture, but not in a good way. Let it stay strong by holding its flexibility by using the tiniest bit of oil ones in a while... like bamboo in the wind 🎋

You are half right: You can't really prevent water evaporating off the surface of your skin. However, your pores allow moisture to be absorbed into the skin, with bodyheat this too will evaporate out of the skin but oil is hydrophobic, it won't mix with water and can't dissolve, if you put oil onto your skin it will create a barrier that won't allow this water to leave so easily. Sealing it in your skin. However this isn't necessarily good, life likes water and not all life is desirable, if you trap water in your skin you trap the bacteria in that water in your skin also (your pores can't breathe) which can lead to pimples. It also interferes with sweating, now a little bit of oil won't be able to stop your sweat glands pumping water to the surface of your skin however this water will be coated with oils causing it to bead on your skin, not evaporating, so you won't lose as much heat and you'll get salty oily sweat beads dripping into your eyes which isn't so harmful but does sting pretty badly, not great for a workout. so in short, yes you can seal in moisture but it might not be desirable... maybe if you get very dry skin? also, plants require evaporation from their leafs to pull water and nutrients up from the soil (like sucking on a staw) please don't seal the moisture in, the poor thing will get rather unwell. As for hair, it should be possible to seal water inside, no idea whether it's desirable though, again probably a very personal thing depending on your hair type and style (but I don't know enough about hair).

If oil creates a barrier in your skin, it means you cannot sweat. Because water isn't leaving the skin. See what I'm saying? There is no sealing in the moisture. There is no oil tjat strong and if there is you don't want it on your skin or hair.
