Excellent information, thank you!! I've always done delivery until a few years ago, and now having a few customers that prefer pick up, I ask them to park in front of my home and text me when they arrive, then I will take the cake or dessert out to them. It helps to have hubby at home, which is the majority of the time (he is 6 foot 6 LOL), he often watches from the door when I take my cakes outside. While we usually deliver together, especially for heavy-ish cakes and for several baked items. When I have to deliver to areas that I feel unsure of, I either will have him deliver FOR me or he will take me to the location.

Whew that is horrible!!! One of the many reasons why I have a public pick up location! In this crazy world we live in I probably will never allow clients to pick up from my home.

If you don’t mind me asking what public place do you use for your pickup location? I’m trying to see what works for others since I don’t feel safe having people come to my home, I’m thinking of maybe doing a park :)

That is a scary story! I only allow select clients to come to my home. Even then, my husband takes the orders out to the vehicles.

Why not use Uber delivery? I'm starting my baking biz but I will rent a commercial kitchen. I can use that address if someone wanted to come by but Uber will be an option, along with UPS next day ground. I've checked the costs and it's very doable .

Thank you girl, because I have so many stories about my experience for pickup and delivery especially when I’m trying to decide should I charge everyone my $20 delivery fee even if they just live 5 miles away 😅 now I feel more confident telling them the price just based on the fact an accident could happen. Keep coming with the stories because they are totally relatable 😁

When I used to deliver dinners, for safety reasons I would only deliver to businesses. Now that I’m starting my baking business I only deliver and/or recommend pickup at a congested shopping plaza. #safetyfirst

Janie, these are great tips! I’m just hoping one day states get rid of the mandatory home address on the label of baked goods for our safety. I’ve wanted to start a home based baking business for over a year but I can’t help but feel unsafe because of this. There are cruel people out there and I don’t think many states care much about our safety as much as they say they do.

Ughhh this is so so annoying... what if you use a commercial bakery can you use that address? It might be a bit more expensive for you to do so but might be worth looking into in the long run?

@@JaniesSweets I’ve looked into it but it’s been super expensive. I’m only looking to do it part time for now so it doesn’t make sense at the moment. I’ve heard some states are starting to change the requirement to just having ID numbers instead of home addresses which is great. Hopefully each state follows suit.

The incident that you mentioned happened in my county. It was horrific & a game-changer around here. Now, I have no guilt about being firm that I will not allow customers to my home. Yes, that's always been my rule, but I used to feel some kind of way about telling my customers "no." I also don't have to frantically clean my whole house every weekend after cleaning my kitchen, after a week creating & before customers arrive. That's enough cleaning for a whole weekend, in itself! (Kids on the loose while Mama's cooking... Sheesh)

Ughhh it’s so so annoying with that law but honestly I would try to be as cautious as possible when it comes to coming in and out of the house... no need to be paranoid but just be aware of your surroundings at all times... just imagine you’re a celebrity and you’re being followed by fans all the time... it’s teally annoying that they do that but hopefully one day they will change the laws

Loved the video. So, cottage law in IL! It states got to label with business name and address etc, which in this case is the home address! How to go around that or deal with that etc?!!! Also, the cottage law has a threshold for selling. What's the next step after if profits exceeded the threshold? Thx a lot

@@JaniesSweets so let me ask you this, what would the requirements be if commercial kitchen renting becomes an option? What are the permits etc everything that would be needed? Labeling too etc? If you could guide please like where to search for this info etc. Also, would it still be ok for product to be picked up from any place agreed about or has to be at the commercial kitchen? Finally, if let's say people ask for your name since they are buying based on instagram images for example, how do you go around that? Thanks a lot
