I have found that old wheel woolies do a great job of getting into the "nooks and crannies" of engine bays.

Do not use aluminum foil on your alternator. You have a positive terminal which goes right to the battery. Sometimes it’s protected by a rubber boot, but sometimes not.

Good point. In that case covering it with a plastic shopping bag would be a better choice.

Need to use SC1 spray it deters dirt etc after applied,, I use it on my rzr.

Vast majority of electrical connections on modern cars are sealed.

I have a 2017 Lexus RX350. The alternator appears to be under a plastic panel. How important is to cover the alternator? Especially if it is difficult to do so. In my case, can I wash the engine bay and not cover the alternator? Thank you, ...

If it is already covered you should be fine, alternators can get wet you just don't want to flood them is all.

Considering how much water I put on the floor rinsing the engine off, a few more drips on the floor were not a concern. Besides that's what floor drains are for.

Yes you can clean virtually every part of you vehicle. Including interior surfaces.
