How To Review Your Full Length Exams and Use Them To Improve

In this live stream, we are going to chat about how I help my students review their exams and use the review process to create an improvement plan.
We will discuss why I like starting with a big picture review before reviewing specific questions. As well as how I recommend reviewing individual questions once you have a sense of the big picture. This will include a discussion of the major error categories and how to use missed questions as opportunities to develop your own MCAT recipes.
Throughout you will have a chance to ask questions and get clarifications on any points and if there is the time at the end I will take a few questions regarding reviewing FLs and how to improve your score from viewers.

Hey! Great video! Question in regards to this video. I really, really struggle with figuring out what the passage is saying and as a result it burns through my time . What do you think could aid such problems? Is this an issue of triangulation? Also, I find that for a lot of questions, especially in B/B, there is no "recipe" because of variety of passages and differences in information presented in graphs. Any words of wisdom are appreciated. Keep up the content!

I am making an assumption here so let me know if this isn’t what you are doing. I am guessing you are spending a good chunk of time up front trying to understand everything the passage tells you. I typically recommend reading the passage briefly in 30s - 2min the goal here is to understand where pieces of information are at rather than trying to understand everything the passage tells you. This allows us to map out the passage and know where to go when looking for information that relates to a question. The extra time we gain from reading quickly can be spent on questions and interpreting the relevant pieces of passage information since a good chunk of the passage will never be asked about. If you are able to consistently find the right passage information then triangulation isn’t the problem since that is simply the process of finding the right information from the passage. If you aren’t able to find the right passage information then triangulation would be a weakness of yours and you can work on this be getting really systematic. You can imagine creating Venn diagrams of sorts where the answer choices, content information, and the question stem information are in different circles. Then you go back to the passage and look for where those ideas overlap. If triangulation isn’t the issue then the problem is either with interpretation (which is typically easier when you are only focusing on the question relevant information), application, or content recall. Without more info it is hard to pinpoint exactly what you are struggling with. There is definitely no one recipe instead think of recipes as a how to guide to solve a specific type of question that you traditionally struggle with. For example, I could could create a recipe for solving hormone based questions since there are a decent amount of commonalities between how the AAMC asks those types of questions. Or and I do have a video on this we can create a “recipe” for genetics and walk through step by step the things to consider and pay attention to when solving punnet square type questions that way we don’t miss anything. Hope that helps!

How do you feel about the Kaplan MCAT? I've gotten an pretty alright score on them, and I've heard it's like a 10 point deflation but I don't want to be overhyped.

Kaplan is decently unrepresentative of the actual MCAT. It focuses more heavily on the content side of things and their logic can be really wacky at times. Most people will experience a score increase when switching from Kaplan to AAMC, but how much really seems to vary from person to person. So if you are happy with your Kaplan scores I imagine your AAMC scores would be where you want them to be as well. It might be worth taking the AAMC sample test as it will give you a general idea of where your AAMC score is at as well as the difference between Kaplan and the actual thing.

What’s your opinion for the Berkeley review? Can it replace Uworld or should it be worked together before AAMC FL?

Berkeley review is okay, but I don’t think it is a good replacement for UWorld. The questions in Berkeley don’t really match the AAMC super well. You can go through them prior to the AAMC material if you want. However I prefer the free Jack Westin Fundamental Discrete problems.
