How to Reverse Fatty Liver Disease Naturally | Jason Fung

Fatty liver disease is a growing epidemic, and a growing cause of liver destruction. Dr. Jason Fung reviews how fatty liver disease develops and shares insights on how to reverse this disease naturally, without needing drugs or surgery. Fatty liver disease is mainly a dietary disease, and therefore, the treatment involves fixing the diet. Check out my blog at / drjasonfung

How much starch/carbohydrates did they feed them to get overweight? (1 bowl = 130 calories) 10 bowls of white rice in a day is 1300 calories. And you are still calorie deficient below the 2200-2400 daily calorie. That's 3 bowls of rice in the morning, 3 bowls of rice at lunch and 4 bowls of rice for dinner.

A bigger problem is the food industry and the lack of proper nutrition training for docs (they’re still based on old studies). Another huge problem would be patient compliance. Most people won’t do what they need to if it means giving up bad habits. They’d rather pop a pill. My mother is like that.

Yes, free! Fasting means eating less food in total. Also, the food industry keeps trying to overfed us. "Supersize...upsize" . Family blocks of chocolate have become daily snacks instead of occasional festive treats and have grown exponentially in size ;). Soda drinks sizes, movie theatre popcorn buckets, triple meat burgers et cetera.

I was a teen in the late 1970's and most all of my friends drank either Coke or Pepsi. I distinctly remember the summer when all of the big soda companies switched from sugar to high fructose corn sweetener. We all noticed that Coke and Pepsi had a slightly different taste. The crazy thing is, those dates corelate with the increase in fatty liver disease from your chart.

People say they want more healthcare providers like Dr Fung, but two of my friends got in trouble for recommending fasting to their patients. One in particular, a nurse practitioner, was FIRED after a couple went and complained about him recommending fasting. The thing about it is that he is so caring and knowledgeable. I couldn’t believe it. I told him to open a practice or join a more supportive practice. Bottom line is that some people can’t fathom not stuffing their faces every hour of the day and prefer western medicine. What a shame!

During my regular check-ups and related blood tests for about 15 years doctors have been remarking, "hmmm, looks like you have a fatty liver. Are you a heavy drinker?" When the answer was no, and I asked what was causing it, they would say, 'hmm, don't know. Well, there's no problem so just let me know if you do develop a problem." Then they would go on to comment that I had high triglycerides. I would ask why that is since I had adjusted my diet to reduce fat intake. "Hmmm, don't know." And they were happy I was eating more rice and pasta in place of meat. And so on, through the development of pre-diabetes up to the brink of diabetes. Thank goodness for the information available on youtube. I'm addressing the problems myself with the help of guys like Dr. Fung.

This went for a few years! Until the absolutely null results. In fact not just null results, I was getting worse!! Lead me to try and find an answer. In this case on the internet. Dr. Fung videos came to the rescue and, and, and... Intermittent fasting and Keto= NO diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. It's that simple, cheap, fast and extremely effective! What's not to like it?! LOL 😂 Without some real expertise guidance. I continued doing the "traditional" diet. With all the carbs/starch, etc. Just like millions others, I was killing myself one bite at a time! Without knowing!

Same here, same problems, same reactions from MD's. Realized that most doctors only know what Big Pharma tells them. (I was a nurse for 47 years) Doctors used to treat diseases/illnesses - now they only treat symptoms ("There is a pill for that!") I brought that up with my internist, who admitted that I was correct. However, she is one of the rebel doctors who does not buy into all the Big Pharma hype - she told me that I could reverse my type 2 DM with a proper keto diet, and has recmmended various herbal products for other health concerns, some of which she uses herself. A rare doctor in this day and age!

On a more positive note, during my last annual checkup, my a1c and fasting glucose level are no longer considered diabetic or even prediabetic. So, I guest I am managing my condition well. My sister was taken away from me by this disease. People, don´t normalize obesity, don´t encourage people to have bad eating habits, this is really serious and in the final stages it hurts so much because the person that you love does not look the same, it´s like they´re disintegrating while alive (and it really is that).

Very important note as Dr. Fung points out:. Slender people develop fatty liver too. From the intake of carbohydrates at high levels. You must be careful not to stuff children with candy / other carbohydrates or you'll burn out the B cells in the pancreas and then they can develop type 1 diabetes. As well many adults have been developing type 1 as well. Our Liver is a major hub of us being healthy. 16+ hours a day of fasting is a good start to reversing NAFLD. Also, I eat lots of chia seeds. It helps. Thanks for reading. Peace.

Since type 2 diabetes or prediabetes is nearly always precipitated by NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease), if I had the power to rewrite the rules that govern the standard of care for all physicians who treat people who are diabetic or prediabetics I would: 1. Make it mandatory that all clinicians watch Dr. Fung's explanation of fatty liver 2. Insist that the FIRST line of treatment, BEFORE the dispensing of drugs, is to put the prediabetic or diabetic patient on a low carb diet in conjunction with an intermittent fasting protocol 3. I would make the non-compliance by doctors of the first two directives tantamount to medical malpractice. That is how important this concept is.

The problem is that doctors NEVER care about your diet. They see a symptom, treat it, then send you home. Meanwhile the actual problem is ignored and getting worse. I did my blood test yesterday after 5 weeks of 100% no carbohydrates no sugar no fruits no starch no red meat diet. My Liver panel test result shown AST , ALT , GGT level all perfect! Far from its top range. Just 5 weeks. My fatty liver is reversed to healthy normal. I lost 4-5kg just from dieting and stop eating after 7pm till next day lunch. 2 meals a day. Only boiled using water, steam Fish, tofu, cabbage broccoli veggies, chicken breast, black coffee no sugar for afternoon lunch and green tea no sugar during evening dinner not later than 7pm. After 7pm I fast till next day lunch 12pm. The fasting time is extremely important as this time allows digestion and some hunger which makes our body burn the fat within without exercising. Exercising barely able to reach the fat around our liver. So fasting is the effective way. I had No milk (contain high and high sugar) . No snacks. No all kind of bread which still are carbohydrates. No omega fish oil. No cake. No biscuits. No rice. No noodles. No fruits especially as it's fructose are directly process only by our liver! Just 5 weeks and fatty liver is back to normal with proven liver function blood test compared to my previous test result 5 weeks ago. I feel very lively light and positive. I lost 5kg. Also My cholesterol and sugar level were also extremely good blood test result! I m looking way younger and my body is nicer too. I m 33 years old male. Non smoker non alcoholic. Didn't work in a toxic environment. I didn't exercise. But I ate much rice, fatty red meat, and milk and cookies and fruits. I slept late before. Now I kicked those bad habit n bad diet. After recovered from fatty liver, I continue my way of eating n fasting n sleeping time. I reintroduced some healthy carbohydrates back into my diet. Such as some corn carrot, some wheat bread, potatoes, some fruits, some rice. Remember not to take fruits everyday as fruits are high in fructose which cause diabetes. Please make sure u do not overdo it. I really mean only some. Lack of discipline and taking it for granted will cause regrets. Legalon supplement is useful as well. I'm sharing for mankind and for those who were helpless from useless doctors. And I'm sharing in memory of my late father who passed away due to end stage liver disease. Months later I did followed up on ultrasound and report shown my liver is perfectly healthy, also my kidney and pancreas and gallbladder. Since then I resume back to normal diet which include some fruits and carbohydrates. I continue to exclude fast food, oily and unhealthy food. Please bear in mind that fruits and carbohydrates must be consume in moderation. And fruits cannot be consume everyday to prevent diabetes! I have kept all my blood test and ultrasound comparing before and after report. And I will continue to test yearly.

I once had fatty liver. My job was very stressful, i had a very long commute to and from work in heavy traffic, i wasn't sleeping much. And i was eating fast food to save time. No symptoms, so my annual physical results on the liver enzyme tests was a shock. I immediately switched to black coffee (instead of the 3-in-1 from my company vendo), avoided soft drinks and juices etc. I moved to a less stressful job that didn't have a long commute. Took turmeric, started walking regularly and took yoga classes (coz i had more time to take care of myself). Reversed it in about 3 yrs i think (perhaps coz we are rice eaters and i didn't know about IF/keto yet). My insurance agent couldn't believe it and kept asking how i did it coz she rarely sees reversals. The phlegm i always had in my throat also went away after that. I always wondered why i didn't have a cold but felt like i had a low-grade fever a lot of the time.

I asked my dr for a complete abdominal ultrasound. I found out through the ultrasound that I have a non alcoholic fatty liver! The blood tests were not accurate. I am planning on fasting, trying to clean up my diet, herbs and acupuncture etc. I wanted share this in hopes someone sees this and gets an ultrasound. Also if you are 45 and over please get a carotid artery ultrasound. It’s super important to see how much plaque is in your system. Especially going to your brain. I found out my right carotid is actually slightly twisted and there is some plaque. The American diet is killing us. Fasting and clean eating are the answer

The first time I had heard that I had Fatty Liver, was in late 1980s or early 1990s. The doctor told me that only heavy alcohol use caused this. Since I rarely drank alcohol, I told him there had to be another reason. He just dismissed issue, saying that since it was not causing me great distress, we would just 'watch' it. I knew it was not due to alcohol, but thought that since alcohol is basically fermented sugar (and I consumed copious amounts of soda and sweets, in addition to other simple starches, like white bread and potatoes, corn) that I could potentially rectify this with diet. Amazing that this dietary change seemed to knock the fatty liver diagnosis right off the table by the next medical visit with testing a year later. Glad the medical community is growing more doctors with common sense:-). Thanks, Dr. Fung!

There is one variable that you may be missing here, and that's Choline. Choline is required to export fats from the liver. Choline deficiency has been shown to induce fatty liver on pretty much any diet in PEMT knockout mice (PEMT is the gene that allows us to produce a limited amount of choline indigenously). If you're low carb diet group ate more eggs, liver, or other choline rich foods, this might also account for the benefit. Dietary fat has to be exported through the liver in the same way, so I'm guessing that what the diet actually did was reduce overfeeding with some possible benefit from increased dietary choline.

I am 37, had NAFLD for a few years watching it get worse and worse. I ate 5-6 times a day thinking it was healthy. Never skipping breakfast I was soooo hungry by 11 if I had no snack, that I would get a headache. Skipping lunch was unthinkable and I felt sleepy after it. I never liked heat but I noticed I started to feel so bad in hot summers I was no use for my family.I gained more and more weight, thing not extreme, 105kg by 1.9m tall. I finally decided to change after my last doctor visit. I started with healthy Keto, then added IF skipping breakfast. First with coffee plus mct oil, then just water. Now after 2 months I can skip breakfast and by lunchtime I really don't want to eat. I lost 10 kg in 2 months with no real exercise but the best part - I completely fixed my liver. ultrasound and blood tests confirmed all in norm. I can not believe this success and I feel so much better. I plan to keep going and gradually increase my activity. Big thank you to you Dr. Fung for what you do.

So I went back after the two month was up and had it checked again and my liver count went from 135 to 55. I went on a kito diet and lost 30 lbs from 278 now 248 and I feel so much better. I was diagnosed with NASH IN December '22 I weighed 246lbs. I started a low carb carnivore diet and fasting 18hrs 5 days a week. After several liver scan since I've reduced my early signs of cirrhosis and my weight down to 194lbs. I had hepatitis b as a youth and found I also had hepatitis c in 2005. Not good, but thanks to the infectious disease clinic at the VA I got the treatment for c and prevented the resurgence of the b virus. While I not out of the woods, I'm doing pretty darn good and may be able to avoid a liver transplant.

A low-carb diet primarily focuses on reducing carbohydrate intake and emphasizes foods that are relatively lower in carbohydrates. Some common low-carb diet foods include: 1. Lean proteins: Chicken, turkey, beef, pork, fish, seafood, tofu, and eggs. 2. Non-starchy vegetables: Leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, bell peppers, zucchini, asparagus, cucumbers, and Brussels sprouts. 3. Healthy fats: Avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, nuts, seeds, and full-fat dairy products (in moderation). 4. Berries: Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries (in moderation). 5. Legumes: Lentils, chickpeas, black beans, and kidney beans (in controlled amounts). 6. Low-carb fruits: Lemons, limes, and small portions of berries. 7. Nuts and seeds: Almonds, walnuts, chia seeds, flaxseeds, and pumpkin seeds (in moderation). 8. Dairy products: Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and hard cheeses (choose full-fat options if tolerated). 9. Healthy beverages: Water, herbal tea, unsweetened coffee, and sparkling water. 10. Herbs, spices, and seasonings: These can add flavor to low-carb meals without adding significant carbs.

Our believes on food are always ingrained with commercials interests or based on old believes and traditions. For instance, the patato was imported into Europe from America’s in the mid 1500’s because it’s unrivalled nutritional value and it’s relative easiness to cultivate. It saved people from famine and has taken a center place in nutrition. Today in our world of abundance and sedentary lifestyle it is still deemed absolutely important but isn’t really necessary anymore. So is understanding how your body works a cure or a treatement? Fruits that are known to have relatively high fructose content include: 1. Apples 2. Pears 3. Grapes 4. Watermelon 5. Cherries 6. Mangoes 7. Bananas 8. Pineapple Regarding foods, some processed foods and sweetened beverages are often high in fructose due to the use of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) as a sweetener. Common examples include: 1. Soft drinks and sodas 2. Fruit juices (especially those with added sugars) 3. Sweetened yogurts and dairy desserts 4. Candies and sweets 5. Breakfast cereals and cereal bars with added sugars 6. Sauces and condiments (e.g., ketchup, barbecue sauce) While fruits contain natural sugars and can contribute to overall fructose intake, they also provide essential nutrients, fiber, and antioxidants. It's important to consume them as part of a balanced diet. However, excessive consumption of added sugars, including high fructose corn syrup, is generally advised to be limited for optimal health

I went to the doctor end of December (2021) because I wasn't feeling well in over a year. (Didn't go sooner because of Covid) I was getting really bad headaches. My left eye was blurry vision. My doctor diagnosed me with diabetes. She said I needed a low carb diet & to lose weight. She also wanted me to take medication which I researched & didn't want to take. I started my low carb diet in January and amazingly started feeling better in a few weeks. After 1 month my eye was back to normal! And no more headaches! It's not easy eating low carb. But I keep telling myself that I'm not sick because of eating this way. I'm not keto because only 20 carbs a day & no sugar is unrealistic for me. I need a least 1 cup of coffee with 1 teaspoon of sugar every day. I don't eat potatoes, rice, noodles, breads or any processed foods now for 2 months. It's not easy! I miss potatoes & bread the most. Plus having to cook everyday isn't easy either. You'd be surprised by how many carbs you eat a day if you kept track.

This guy got meat in his words.. I did read his book and now he is explaining nuts and bolts of the real reason which sits in our brain when we are doing(the fasting). I was reported fatty liver over one and half decades back (NAFL), I have been doing OMAD-One Meal A Day since 2019 June. Feeling happy. While recent year's blood work has been showing that I am having no fatty liver, I am going to get the scanning to confirm it. If anyone is on the fence to consider tomorrow mode, try to get the nuts and bolts to your BRAIN with the videos like this, then your mind would guide you the right thing to do before you ran out of the simple options to deal with the complex situations. Fatty liver disease made so easy to understand. I recently had blood work and was able to get the results from the lab. I knew I had a fatty liver, I was never told what I needed to do. I thought I'd be ok. My values are up, I am concerned. My doctor is not available so I see the nurse practitioner. She had my blood work results. She didn't say anything about my liver values getting worse or my cholesterol getting worse. I was instructed to continue on the same hbp medication and levothroxine. I am seeing a new doctor and I have an appointment with him in June. I need to advocate for myself. I do a great job advocating for my dogs at the veterinary clinic. It's me time now, it's well over due.

It's just horrifying that I'm getting the best medical advice from KZread. I was diagnosed with metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes 3 years ago. Two years of a very low carb diet and never eating the same meals as my husband later, I looked great and the diabetes was gone. But, the constant denial of food was not sustainable. Two years and one pandemic later, all the weight and more is back. Through a reference on another channel, I found Dr. Fung. Through intermittent fasting, I've already lost 11 pounds in a month, which is extraordinary because I also have a low functioning thyroid. I eat fewer meals than my husband, but am able to eat dinner with him and others and eat normal foods. Adding in fat to my diet has allowed me to greatly reduce the carbs I eat and not be hungry between meals. Anyway, this video is about fatty liver. Well, it's not too surprising that my liver is "a little fatty" according to two doctors I've seen in the past 7 years. But, I've been told by both that I don't have to worry about it! Well, if I don't worry about it, isn't it just going to get worse?! I can see that whatever is measured liver-wise in my blood, is now showing in the "high" column on the lab report. In red! But, "Don't worry". I am confident that with IF (OMAD) and giving up artificial sweetener (which is the hardest thing), my liver will improve. But, should I have learned this because I happened to view "The Daily Connoisseur" who spoke about intermittent fasting??? It was just happenstance. Patients in the U.S. really have to self-advocate, and watch KZread. Terrible system.

Thank you for sharing. You explained why when I ate fresh oranges my trigs went over 500. Soda didn’t even push my level that high. I consumed much less fruit once I found out that fructose was a source of nafld and now that I have watched your video explanation I understand the mechanics of it. I went on keto on March 2 and found that 3-4 gr carbs was too much for me so switched to Carnivore at the end of the month. I did labs at about 5 weeks and already my Liver enzymes were about mid-range which was a good thing. I discovered that I was pre-diabetic for about 15 years and now my BG stays under 100 most of the time. Also doing IF and keep a food log so if my weight goes up I can track down the culprit.

Most people are clueless about the link between excessive carbs and high blood triglycerides.

Love how you simplify and explain the science in such an understandable way. I’m 23 and found out I have a mild fatty liver. Big wake up call 😳. Appreciate the video

@@almaburns6562Get your Liver UltraScanned. Also, check for fasting insulin and ALT. Combination of those will tell if you have fatty liver or not.

Most doctors in the American for profit medical system have no idea how to help their patients

I comment as a Brit: I have never been able to understand how / why a generally progressive country like the USA would still have health insurance as its backbone for healthcare. I judge societies by how they treat their old and infirm. Remember, insurers are a business. They want a good bet. They want premiums and not claims. So if you're less than perfect you won't be able to get insurance! I know our NHS isn't perfect but rich or poor, young or old, everybody gets help here as per their NEEDS not their abilities to pay

I was at my Dr. Visit. I so wanted to ask her what her A1C and blood tests show. I wondered if she was insulin resistant....

The doctors are kept dumb by the medical school. Only the scientists know and half of them are paid off to silence themselves as they will not receive funding if their findings are too controversial
