How to reproof your tent groundsheet with Grangers Fabsil

Don't replace, reproof!
If you have a pre-loved/second hand, very well used or just old tent, you're probably finding that it is either leaking or letting water in through the groundsheet.
There really is no need to replace it as there is a great product called Grangers Fabsil that you can use to rewaterproof it.
My tent, a Vango Banshee 300, was bought on Facebook for £25. Very well used, it needed reproofing, which I did last year. However, on my last camp I found that the groundsheet wasn't waterproof so I have had to reproof the groundsheet too - there's nothing worse than a wet sleeping bag!
In this video I show you how to reproof your tent groundsheet.

Great video 👍🏻, love the idea of “make do and mend” ecologically brilliant . There is a technique that I use that is quite hand but a bit more of a hard line approach but will prove to be more robust . One of the reasons that tents get wetted in patches is that the polyurethane coating degrades , literally flacking off . Fabsil is really for proofing against the rain or where the tent meetings the weather . It may not stop the water coming through a tent floor . So here’s the trick , ( bearing in mind that this will COMPLETLY STIP any coasting of the tent floor or fly sheet !!! ) before doing this , (NB THIS IS A JOB TO BE DONE OUTSIDE THE FUMES ARE TERRIBLE 😣 PLUS ,USE LONG WATER PROOF GLOVES AND WEAR A FUME RESISTANT MACK AND SAFTEY GOOGLES )get of bottleof 10% ammonia and dilute (500mls) in 12 litres of very warm water ,no detergent needed at all ! Soak the tent in this for 10mins and all the polyurethane coating will slough off . Rinse in copious amounts of fresh water , Leaving you with tent that will leak like a sieve , Now leave to air for a couple of days and buy yourself some gear aid floor tent sealant and paint the inside of the tent floor and /or the fly sheet . When this is dry then fabsil the outside of the fly sheet and the underside of the ground sheet . All done ✅. Now the trick is to prevent it happening in the first place . Never store your tent in its bag you use to go camping in , it will grow mould like a mushroom factory ! Place loosely in a net bag after airing it thoroughly. Hope that helps 👍🏻

Thanks for that..My Marechal s/h tent had some very light mildew in packing (not down to me but down to the seller). I'm going to wash it off and apply your advice. Thanks.

Like your video, good instruction. I am having trouble with the groundsheet of our Robens tent, water is coming through, it's porous. But i read on the internet that a new coating won't help because it will wash away in no time. What is your experience?

Hi Idse, Thank you :) Singe doing my groundsheet, I have used mine in a few very wet situations and it has been fine for me - no wet coming into my tent. I would recommend going over it a few times though in different directions, if it is really wetting out just so that you get every little thread in the ground sheet. The only way that I have found for the reproofing to come off is if it comes into contact with cleaning products e.g washing up liquid/lotions etc, which do damage the waterproofing. If in doubt though, for an added layer of protection, you can always buy a cheap tarp (from a DIY store) and cut it to the shape of your tent as a cheaper alternative to footprint. It will give you that added bit of security in addition to the groundsheet reproofing. I definitely think it is worth trying rather than replacing a fully usable tent. Let me know how you get on! Depending on where you are, you can also have groundsheets replaced like with this company: outdoorsewingsolutions.co.uk/tent-repair-services/

Hi Sarah, live in the Netherlands (wet) : ) I think I give it a go. Just bought it from someone who said it was a fine tent, not so. Looks like the rest is in a good shape so probably worthwile trying. The tent is over 6 feet so no option for a tarp. Do you recommand it from in and ouside of the groundsheet? @@SarahIrvingTheUrbanWanderer

My family and I have done extensive backpacking and I would like to share our experience with trying to restore waterproofing on old tents. If the tent has been coated with just a silicon waterproofing you can have some success with waterproofing. But most tents( unless they are very expensive) use polyurethane or polyurethane on one side and silicon on the other. Once polyurethane starts to degrade it starts to absorb moisture, then will begin to leak. On a ground cloth that is not in standing water this isn’t a big issue because the water isn’t being forced through under pressure. But on a rain fly it is a different matter. If you’ve ever pitched a tent, even a new, well sealed one, in heavy rain over several days you’ve probably experienced leakage. That’s because the polyurethane begins to absorb moisture and starts to leak. What we have found with reconditioned flys is this process happens much much faster. I no longer trust reconditioned flys because we’ve had sudden failures a long ways out. My recommendation is this: waterproof the floor of the tent rather than the ground cloth by cleaning it very well then apply a silicon water repellent like Nikwax. For flys don’t recondition unless you plan to use the tent in gentle conditions. If the tent is still in good shape but the fly leaks, get a cheap plastic tarp and make a new fly. They aren’t pretty but they work well. Don’t trust reconditioned flys.
