How to replace your RV or Motorhome roof EPDM or TPO

Ойын-сауық

Replacing the roof on my 1995 Flair Fleetwood motorhome this method works for both EPDM and TPO roofs.
This is the roof kit i purchased for around $488.00 made by Lottes Roofing www.ebay.com/itm/10-x-30-45-Mi...
You will also need butyl tape or putty tape and probably extra lap sealant and extra seam tape.

Purchased: August 2023 - still works GREAT!I kzread.infoUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install. This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment. I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

I am an RV tech and do roofs all the time, takes me the better part of an 8 hour day and maybe an hour in the morning. It's really not a hard job unless you have severe water damage. However if you do it yourself you will save tons of money.

It is probably worth the trial and error following a tutorial by learning a new trade but you'll spend 30-40 hours of tedious, frustrating labor learning the ropes while trying to stay under 2k in materials in order to save ~4k vs paying a pro to do the whole thing for 6k.

They made it sound much more difficult than your video shows. I work professionally in the commercial construction industry so I am more than capable to do this and honestly I trust my work more than someone at a local dealer.

They probably did have some hyped up sales pitch but everyone is basically paying for the high insurance. Asphalt shingles are more brutal to work with, especially since rubber is used on low pitches. Big rubber jobs can get fucked up if you're not focused. It sucks to pull back up, or spilling glue, etc. 14 grand for what size exactly? On a friggin' camper?!

Instead of using roofing screws on the side termination bars, I'd use longer pan head screws like you used to screw the roofing to the edges of the vent openings. You can get the rubber washers separate to add to those pan head screws. You'll have a smoother line, and less wind noise. I'd also put a tiny dab of sealant on the screw threads as I installed them

Great video... Great work... ... I have to tell you a story only you would appreciate... I have flipped RVs, Travel Trailers for years... I found this dinky like travel trailer... and the owners said there were "LEAKS" in the roof... when I walked inside I SAW all these NAILS sticking through the ceiling!!! I asked why there were dozens (yes I said dozens) of nails sticking through the ceiling. They said, "because there were leaks and we NAILED plywood (inside) to make it stop!"... I felt so sorry for them... I got a good price on the tiny trailer and had to completely redo do the roof... So I know how hard this is... but so necessary ... Thank you for sharing your video. Great job.

  • @patriots5628

    @patriots5628

    4 жыл бұрын

Did you ever get around to doing your '09 Keystone trailer? I have a 2007 Keystone sprinter 33 ft that I'm trying to do myself and it's a little stressful because of North Carolina weather rain two three days sun two three days it's starting to get better now here in June. I have a fiberglass trailer that lamination and I'm in question of some tasks in order to weatherproof this roof and I have to replace some broken one by twos which is very thin roof rafters and I don't know if they screw them in from the side where the lamination is but it's just so many questions and no one to share information with that have this in common so that's why I'm contacting you and it hasn't been about a year so you would probably freshen your mind. I wanted to know you know do you screws did you staple it down because my roof deck is stapled down and it's pretty badly damaged and I'm using a tarp to try to protect myself from the rain because I'm staying in it as well so it sucks with no help. Did you use eternal bond tape for all the seams? This is probably the most important question. Your procedure on removing the whole roof or did you piece by piece remove everything because I'm afraid to take the whole rubber roof off take all the panels off in one day because of not knowing how much time it would take to get the panels back on if it can be done in one day or not. It's a weather issue and that's my problem. Hope it went well for you if you completed the roof repair. The front file on panel I'm still trying to find and underlayment for it nothing's easy for a travel trailer

Excellent work dude. It's always great seeing guys and gals taking their time and doing everything correctly. No cutting corners or making modifications to the product, process, or installation. There are so many out there filming their shoddy work and uploading it as the "best way" to complete the project because "the way they say to do it isn't necessary and takes too long. Not only can save money to buy beer with, but you'll save a lot of time to drink your beer with if you just use this or do it this way....... ". A few years later those types of people are dealing with a failed roof and extensive water damage. Again, great work man. Thank you for uploading. Cheers!

This guy either installs roofs for a living or he's the best handyman I've ever seen ,my guess is that he's a roofer because no handyman would know about using a punch to stop tearing at penetrations ,you did a nice job man ,on my 5th wheel I installed 60 mil fleece backed fully adhered Trocal PVC roof , i got lucky on my deck having no rott so i chose a 1/4 OSB and glued it to the existing deck using yellow glue on the deck amd the bottom of the new deck because i didnt want fasteners on my deck ,i taped my seams as well ,I chose PVC over rubber or TPO so I could heat weld the roof to the edge metal I custom bent into a one piece drip edge/gutter channel, I also made 8 inch high roof curbs for my vents and A.C. units that I wrapped with PVC coated metal so I could heat weld the roof sheet to the curbs and be water tight without any flashing ,I used Tech 5 fasteners for my gutter channel that have rubber washers ,once tight I covered every fastener with a blob of white Vulkem polyurethane caulking and tooled it in , I have 4 slide outs I waterproofer using White Firestone 60 mil EPDM that worked out well too .

We used a very similar roofing system on our commercial property with a flat roof. In our case, keeping careless contractors from puncturing the roof was our biggest problem. Second was making sure the seams were properly heat welded by the installing contractor. A system like what you installed , if done correctly, can easily last 20 years.

This is a fantastic video ! ! ! It could have been titled the anatomy of an RV roof, because it explains it all. My only suggestion is to put sealant on the threads of all screws, so that they seal to every layer on the way in. I can see saving a lot buying an RV that is cheap because it is in need of a roof and putting one on myself.

Excellent video! If I could give a couple additional tips, I would roll out the roofing material and let it relax for a couple hours to smooth out the creases before glueing. The Eternabond tape is fanatic if not overkill. Duct tape or gorilla tape works also. If you must use roofing screws, cover them with lap sealant anyway. If you make a series of videos being more specific on each phase, that would be extremely helpful for a newby. Nice job! That roof will last many years if maintained.
