Installing a Commercial TPO Membrane on a RV?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
I was contacted by a viewer to help with a roofing issue, but unfortunately I was very busy. However, the crew at Cassone's RV was willing to help an owner in dire straights.
His 2003 Fleetwood Discovery had a rotten roof and the old membrane was removed by another business. Unfortunately, that business did not want to finish the job so the owner was left stranded. He wanted a commercial TPO roof on his unit like the guys at @RVROOFINSTALL does. He provided the materials and just needed assistance installing the membrane and he would take care of the rest.
This is a GAF roofing system I and the rest of the Cassone Crew has never done before, so obviously it was a learning experience for us too. Sta-bond 183 was used to replace the luan decking like a Winnebago roof. We did our best to follow the manufacturer's directions but I am positive we did not do it perfectly.
Thanks!

“ It’s load bearing aluminum foil “, lmao! Don’t tell them I that, they will believe you! I love your work ethic and informative videos. Been doing this almost 4 decades but it’s always great to see other techs going through the same process. Keep it up, your videos are always fun to watch.
Boy do I miss the old day of metal roofs. My RV trailer in New Zealand that came from England had an aluminum roof and was amazing.

Now you know why we are the best James. It's not easy by no means. Although we do have full wrap scaffolding and we are inside. I'll bet you all got stones with that solvent adhesive...lol. Dicor may be easier to out down but it certainly isn't better. We don't use GAF anymore. I may have to make a road trip to show you all how to get it done...lol.

What ever happened to that vent pipe you cut off? How did you reattach it if you did?
The real way to bond TPO is gluing the deck and the sheet. Roll it in once it's tacky. I see all these rvs fail because roofs are put on wrong, gluing only deck. Of coarse I am a commercial roofer of 25 years so have significant experience

Great video James. Where you cut the wires was where I had my leak problem. It originally had foam that had dried out and turned to dust. I squirted silicon into it like the ones you removed. Still had a leak, so I foamed it again. No more leak so far. Best Wishes! Kevin

Thanks for showing us this. It would be great if the owner provides us some updates on how he finished the job. RV roofs do seem to be problematic and prone to failure and the industry should do something to improve the long term outlook. The commercial roof route seem to have some advantages over the RV roofs even if it's much harder to apply.

What is best way to glue sides? Or what type of sealant or adhesive?
While on the topic of roof repair, I have got my own little project going on. I am repairing the edpm (auto correct inserted Rodman then Edomite in place of “edpm”. You gotta love the auto correct feature.) roof on my 23’ travel trailer. So, it has been a zen practice removing the flaking paint from the “Rodman” roof. I started with Dawn, water and stiff bristle brush to get the big patches. I am now down to a putty knife with a sharpened edge to coax some of the remainder. If it doesn’t come up willing, I leave it and move on. I will be applying Pro Guard Liquid Roof (primers and sealant). I have on occasion lost focus and nicked the roof down to the black (
That's the roof material that manufacturers SHOULD be using. I'll be replacing our 5th wheel roof with that when it's time.

When I used to do laminate on cabinets, if it was a long run we would use pipes every so often to keep it from touching it until we laid it down I don’t know if that something you could try or think about next time.Pipes would be maybe a foot to a foot n half apart and then you would pull pipe out smooth that out to the next pipe then pull that pipe out.u get the idea. i used this on my class A over 10 years ago .. good stuff but glue not so much as i have spots that came up but with driving speeds it does not care can stays where you put it , lots of trees tested my roof as i am 12.6 high with out ac units and did not hurt it . hard part was dicor of any kind does not like to stick to it at all and comes right off 6 months latter
@AZExpert

that's good to know about the dicor. Thanks
Owner should have had the channel that specializes in 60 mil TPO roofs do it. It should be noted that it seems that this fairly long Class A owner was trying to get this done on the very cheap. Even with purchasing the commercial TPO roof for this size coach, $2k to do the install is way too cheap. We did have a roof replacement for our very much smaller 25' 6" estimated by the other channel and it was too expensive for us but with a warranty that would probably outlive us and maybe even RVROOFINSTALL. If you want a 60 mil TPO roof, go to the experts that do that, however, be prepared to pay for it. For AZ Expert and for Cassone RV that did this one, congratulations! You were very kind to this owner, and we hope you got paid correctly for your efforts.

While I feel your intention of your comment was good, giving advice to the owner against my channel seems less than good natured. As a warning to others, still unkind. Nice video. Do you have to use the Contact Cement? I thought TPO roofs use a different glue, not contact cement.
"Commercial grade TPO" is identified as 60mil or thicker by the WSRCA, NRCA, and by nearly every manufacturer since 2009. And that's 60 before you factor things like fleece thickness. The reason why is TPO naturally erodes, losing thickness every year. Especially those utilizing halogenated fire retardants as opposed to the more modern formulas which prefer magnesium.

I have a sun lite slide in pickup camper, the roof looks to be rubber with felt backing, what glue would I use? I haven’t removed anything as yet would this have luanne or plywood? The side walls seam soft so I’ll have to remove the aluminum siding.
I repaired my pop up. I don't know what the fabric is called but, I got it from my client. He transports wine in 18 wheeler containers. It's a big 20x10 ft Bladder that holds wine. The fabric is plastic and has cloth inside of it. Very tough fabric...
I have a truck camper where the front has a crack in it apparently from a roof leak that collected water and broke through the outer material. I am new to this camper and have never had a roof leak. As you know this water was from all the rain we got recently here in Phoenix Metro. Would the tpo material be a good replacement for this crack?
im struggleing with my pop out roof..the first try was a fail .the glue folded and what a mess.now i had a local roofing place glue the roof on the wood first .but there are bubbles that im not shure if the slide seals will lay over...its pvc thick roof....my question is can the slide roof free float with only glue in spots and the surrounding screws holding it on....do i have to glue the whole roof to the wood..
That seems like it would be a true monster of a roof once installed but the installation process itself, wow😳 Perhaps better suited as a factory option as a custom-ordered feature. I would pay extra for a roof like that... presuming the factory installs it correctly of course.

I'm thinking about going with 45mil Tpo. But I'm not sure if 1/4" luan is sufficient to bond it to. One supplier says that 1/2" plywood must be used. I have a 2006 Rockwood ultralite with aluminum roof supports and 1/4" luan glued to foam. Any advice would be appreciated.

This field is not regulated so there is no requirements, check your state. It may be best to have some sort of RVIA credentials to help kick start your business. I am not much of a fan of RVIA they make you pay for "the decal" when you purchase most RVs. You do not get anything for it but support their organization. I am sure other professional organizations would love to automatically get paid from the buyer/client to support them.

I would use a fiberglass on it Jon. You can get it in rolls just like what they use on the side walls of these new high end class As and you can get a roll up to 45’ long. It would be a great product to use on the top and sides of your tiny camper since it’s good enough for $3 million dollar coaches. I’ve seen it available thru RecPro and a few other RV parts suppliers so just look around. Good luck on whatever you choose to use tho and keep me up to date on how it goes.
