How to Replace Spark Plugs & Wires on 2003 - 2023 Chevy Express Van / GMC Savana

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Changing out the spark plugs and wires on my 2006 Chevrolet Express 2500 van with 4.8L V8. This should work on all 2003 and newer express and savana cargo vans. When it comes to removing the spark plugs there are many different tool combinations that will work to get the job done. In this video I show just one of many ways. You may have to experiment with different size ratchets, extensions and swivels to get the right lengths to access each spark plug. If you have any questions feel free to ask them in the comments section and I'll do my best to respond.
Update: The van in this video is a 4.8L 2500 chassis. On the 1500 5.3L the passenger front plug is too close to the firewall and the dipstick is in the way. Replacing it was done the same way as the driver front plug, from the engine bay. Just had to take the radiator overflow tank off by removing one bolt and moving it off to the side.

I would have never thought to do this from inside the vehicle. Amazing. Very glad I came here!

Thanks, good video on how to get this done. This was a big help in that I didn't have to discover the tricks to get this to go easier.

A "me too moment" for me. I was quoted $600 for a tuneup on my 2014 2500 Savana 4.8L and it was running so well at 110,000 miles that I bypassed the tuneup believing I had time to learn how to access everything. That was three years ago. I have changed oil two times and only put about 20,000 miles on it. I feel justified because now I know I don't have to remove the wheel well covers to do this unless I decide I want to see everything. I don't believe it has ever had a tuneup done. Thanks for your video. Even if I choose to remove the wheel well covers, it will only serve to increase visibility for me.

Just finished plugs and wires on my 2010 Express 1500 5.3L. Everything went per your video except the passenger front plug. On the 1500 5.3L the passenger front plug is too close to the firewall and the dipstick is in the way. Replacing it was done the same way as the driver front plug, from the front of the engine. Just had to take the radiator overflow tank off by removing one bolt and moving it off to the side. Those Iridium spark plugs are amazing. I had 109K miles on them and although they are wearing out, I think they could have gone another 20K. Thanks again for putting this video out.

Thanks Ron, I appreciate you taking the time to post the difference you found in the 1500 chassis with the 5.3L. I added an update to the description in hopes of saving others some time and effort. 👍

At the 8:13 mark, he says the motor is a 4.8L in his 2500. It does look like there is plenty of room on the passenger side compared to a 5.3L 1500.

Diaelectric grease is an insulator, it should never contact the metal terminal parts of the plug boot or plug. It should be used on the ceramic part of the plug only and carefully applied on to the rubber part of the boot only. You can use a qtip to make sure you dont contact the terminal with the grease. It will then eliminate arcing to grounds and prevent boot from sticking next time it is removed.

While you're there change the oil pressure sensor it's only $30 but it will save you from taking everything apart

Do you know how much torque for the park plugs?

I believe the service manual says 11-13 ft lbs. I just get them reasonably hand tight, or "good and snug".

Noticed your manifold bolt was snapped off closest to the rear on the drivers side... Mine was too ! Apparently they do that over time... Wondering how you dealt with that !
