Another video I watched he steamed the spline to get it to come out more easily. Of course you cant steam around wood for too long.

You can do it! Just make sure you are paying attention to whether they are hand caned or pressed cane. This tutorial only works for pressed cane pieces. We are working on a hand caning video but it takes much longer to do and is a little more complicated.

Does it make a difference if its soaked in cole water or warm water? Great video. Looking forward to attempting two chairs.

You should fit it while still wet/damp because it's more pliable so it won't break.

So your chair needs to be hand caned. This is a completely different process. We are working on a video where we learn to hand cane, but we are not ready to put it out yet. Definitely subscribe so you don't miss it because that is coming your way!

I have an old chair with an Oval back, it seems I can do it per your instructions. Any tips for replacing the Oval back?

I've saved this great video for about a year and am following the instructions today. Sadly, whoever repaired the chair before it developed a hole in the cane must've used superglue or something! The spline doesn't lift out even after multiple box cutter passes and the cane itself is so fixed in there, the chisel doesn't ease it out, but breaks it. Any advice? I'm needing to excavate the spline practically by the half inch. I assume that's due to the glue that used? Advice welcome...I have two more chairs to do.

Most grooves are either 3/16" wide (use #8 spline) or 1/4" wide (use #9 spline).

I have outdoor folding chrome/metal chairs with cane webbing stashed in my closet.. is there a major difference if the chair itself is metal?

I suppose you could, although I don't know where you would get synthetic cane.

You could probably wedge any material in there it's the same basic principle used in mesh/screen windows and doors. It just depends how thick the material is and whether it will withstand being sat on.

found a chair from the 1800's and couldn't get the dang cane out of the bottom, back was easy.. bottom is impossible to remove except in tiny pieces with tweezers..lol

Now, if I wanted to do away with the cane webbing all together how could I do that? What could I put in its place? I have dining chairs and in the middle of the backs, there is this cane webbing. I’m trying to give them a facelift and I kinda want to do away with those backings if I have a simple alternative. Thank you!

Natalie Russ I ended up keeping on my chairs and just chalk painting them. It actually looks great!

My groove was 1/4“ wide so I bought 1/4“ spline but with the webbing in the groove the spline is too big. What do I do?

How would you charge for this for a client?

If the caning hasn't ripped but is popped out of the side, is there a way to fix it without replacing the cane?

Sure! It will likely not be at strong of a hold, but it is definitely worth a shot!

I recently recanes my rocking chair and the spline pipped out on one side while it dried. How can I fix this?

You could try adding a little more glue and then pushing it back in. You are going to want to put something heavy on top of it to keep it held down while its drying.

can be cane painted on both sides? how it breaths then?

I would only recommend painting one side or the cane will not breath and could become prematurely brittle

Does hot woodworking glue work here? That's generally my first choice because it sets so quickly.

I have never worked with it.. But I suppose you could if you worked very quickly. I think you would probably be a better judge of that than me if you have experience with the glue.

Does the name need to dry completely before installing it?

No! The cane tightens up a little bit when it dries so you actually want to install it while it is still a little wet because it will tighten even more and look even better when it dries. On the same hand though, you do not want to put any weight on the cane when it is drying because you could risk stretching it. You got this, it's intimidating but it's going to be much easier than you think. Best of luck with your project!!

Had a problem. I the soaking instructions exactly. I had a spline break right at the inner edge of the groove rendering the entire piece useless. Reordering a new one. This happened because, in my opinion, the ends of the "shims" are too sharp. . I will be cutting and sanding mine down for the next attempt. This is my third one in 20+ years and the only one that has ever broken. Just want others to be cautious.

My chair seat is 16" wide so I assume I should purchase 24" wide cane webbing?

yeah, I would recommend the 24" because that width should be cut to 20" total.
