Where do you get the thin strip of wood to train around the cane with?

We found an old broken rattan chair on the street and have some replacement webbing for it. Just wanted to know for the wood which keeps the webbing in place, would you recommend using one which is the same width as the gap or slightly smaller. If smaller, how much so?

For the cane we used a size slightly bigger than the gap. When you soak it in water, it will absorb some of the water like a sponge and become softer. This allows for the cane to slide into place quite easily. Once it dries fully it will shrink back to its original size. That way it will fill the gap tightly.

What do you do about the little loose fibers after it dries?

Hi Prudhvi, best is to oil them with linseed oil every 6 months to avoid that from happening. I just use a soft cloth and rub the rattan with some oil (front and back).

Can you stain or add a conditioner to the rattan and cane?

  • @thesmallrenoproject1130

Absolutely. The rattan I bought was bleached so it would easily take on any wood stain colour you choose. In terms of conditioning, linseed oil and a cloth does the job to keep the rattan springy and in good shape

It's called cane, their normally come in different widths depending on how big the groove is. If you search for "rattan cane" you will find some results.

Can you stain the caning ?

I bought bleached rattan. I cant see why you couldn't stain it with some wood stain. I think best would be to buy your rattan the stain you would like it to be, so it lasts longer.

@@thesmallrenoproject1130 but I cannot find rattan that has been stained, just the yellowish natural.

@@rosellaporro519 right in that case I would definitely use a decking oil stain or wooden floor stain. Depending on how dark you would like to go.
