Can’t thank you enough for filming & sharing your expertise, tips, & amazing process from start to finish!! I wish I had attempted upholstery 30-40+ years ago!! Now I just wish there was someone 1/2 as good as you, near me, bc I’d be happy to pay someone to do this quality of work for me!!

Hello, fellow Nebraskan I am Kearney. I love your videos you would make a very good teacher. I also upholster but not even in your league, and I have not the patience for caning. I do most of my projects outside I have a covered porch and so far I will have to delay my projects untell it gets cooler.

I forgot to ask: Can I get 1 dozen of those Stickley-Brandt Vienna chairs for $19.50 Plus tax and shipping, of course 🙂. I'm finally taking time to recant our chair that looks almost exactly like the one in the picture. Thank you, again, for such a great video!! I'll try to update you when I'm done.

I was very much out of practice when I did this seat and drove a couple of the wedges in too tightly, breaking a couple strands of cane. Be careful. Good luck! "Buck" (chairs are currently out of stock. Price subject to change)

Thank you for this video and for YOU TUBE! I've just removed the old caning and am very grateful for your instructions of what to do next. Did I hear you say, Liquid Hide Glue to put into the channel when you're putting in the soaked cane. thank you for your reply,

Franklin's Liquid Hide Glue works great. It doesn't always need to be applied to the spline. I had some stubborn areas where the spline kept popping out. (third caning on this chair) Be careful not to drive the wedges too deep. If you get them too tight you can snap the cane. I was out of practice when I did this chair. Not a grade A job. Good luck. "Buck"

The cane is brittle when dry and breaks. Tung oil brightens the color and helps reduce unfriendly spills from absorbing into the cane. (Red wine?)

I have a nearly identical Vienna bent-wood cafe chair with a ring of holes, not a channel. Could I still use pre-woven cane seating? How would I attach it? A video showing how would be a bonus.

  • @Buckminsterupholstery

No. You need to weave your chair with individual strands. Quite time consuming and can be frustrating. Sorry, but no bonus video on this one.

Products of nature are unpredictable. Adding glycerine to the water will slow drying time. I confess in my haste filming this, I broke a couple strands. It can be a serious problem in time.

That was tung oil varnish. It helps seal the cane from stains. Say somebody spills some red wine on the seat. It also brings up a nicer color (sooner). The damaged seat I removed I had put in 30 years ago.? It had darkened beautifully.
