How To Replace Lifters on A 3.6 Pentastar with special tool! (Part 1) |Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep

Ойын-сауық

Hey Good People,
As promised, my wife has edited the lifter tutorial video and here it is. I know I already have a longer version of the tutorial on these lifters that is longer and removes the front cover. This tutorial I use a special tool so that you can do it without having to remove the front cover and it makes the job shorter.
I hope you enjoy the video, and I hope you learn something and how to do the job. That is always my goal.
This Part 1 of this series. Here is Part 2: • How To Replace Lifters...
Special tool I use : amzn.to/45Ira3p
Other tools I use : www.Amazon.com/shop/alexthecardoctor

Alex

The 3.6 gets a lot of bad press, but I had 280,000 miles on a 2013 Town and County. The transmission went south and I sold the thing for pretty good money. At some point south of 200,000 mile, I had roller rocker tick. The hardest part of the repair was getting the wiring loom off the back valve cover. About $40 for gaskets, rocker, and lash adjuster. A pry bar and rags for cushion, and the rocker popped out. Used Pennzoil Platinum every 6,000 miles. One of the best cars I ever owned, comfortable, DVD, backup camera, automatic side doors and lift gate, who could ask for more. I just found a 2016 T&C, a garage queen, 47,000 miles for $16,000. Going to Daytona Beach tomorrow to get it for my granddaughter.

Omg what a job, I just wonder how there is not a class action lawsuit against them or some kind of investigation into what is going on with these as they continually fail.

There was a lawsuit for this issue, but it's been basically dismissed, yet they have made several revisions to the rocker arm design as they knew they could be problematic. The 2016-present rockers are a completely different design but being Fiat, I can't see that it will be any better.

Great video. Another mech on youtube shows cam damage and how he's fine putting back a cam if just the outside edges have been worn by the rocker plates, but if/when the rocker roller bearings seize up they quickly wear the lobes down and begin pushing metal outward, creating a sharp-looking edge with a square-bottom canyon down the middle. Having mine opened up right now and all rockers/lifters replaced. No word yet on what cams look like.

keep u a little pocket screwdriver in your shirt pocket, and get you a little craftman crescent wrench to keep your pocket, it will save u many trips to the tool box. craftman makes a little one with a green coating over the handle, and its the perfect size for many bolts and nuts.

How do I know if it’s my lifters or exhaust manifold leak on my 3.6 pentastar?

  • @88jopar

I had 3.6l pentastar in a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan and it was reliable af. I changed the oil n filter every 4k miles with regular 5w30 oil. Had 141k miles and sold it in 2020 bc the tranny started to act up in the first 10 minutes, then after it was smooth shifting. It was amazing on gas. Used to get 18 in the city and 37 on the hwy.

@@doncnunez6231 I changed it too late and at the wrong shop. I took it to a fast lube place which was a mistake in the first place. They didn't attach the upper tranny cooler line properly and shortly thereafter it started to barely seep. I flushed ( which is no no) at 118000 miles as per the owner's manual. It should have been done instead at 45k as i used the van for uber and other courier jobs. Lot of stop n go. That was my mistake.

That's because you used 5w 30... Most of these get wrecked because owners use 5w 20 oil...... I don't care if the Caps says 5W-20 you never put that in that 3.6

  • @88jopar

    @88jopar

It stated 5W30 on my oil cap and i would change the oil and filter every 6 000 to 7 000kms. ( 3 750 - 4 375 miles) and that is why my engine ran well and had no issues.

@@doncnunez6231 I flushed out the tranny fluid at 192 000kms or 120 000 miles, which was stated in my owners manual to change it at that mileage. The thing that i did wrong was take it to a quick lube place, who did the flush and i was stupid enough not to check if they secured the tranny cooler line properly. A month later, my shift quality when the vehicle was cold, changed to a thud when i accelerated from a stop in the first 10 minutes of operation. Once it warmed up it was ok. 3 mistakes i made here: 1) taking it to a lube shop 2) flushing the fluid instead of removing the pan and changing the fluid. 3) Flushing the fluid so late instead of changing it at 50 000kms ( 31 500 miles) If i had done things differently than the above, i would still be driving this van today, instead of selling it 4 years ago.

Doing research on this issue, it seems that there was poor quality control on the manufacter of the roller rocker arm pins that cause the needle bearings to dislodge causing increased movement hence the ticking sound. Poor metalurgy(metal quality) is the calprit.

@AlexTheCarDoctor so get this wild scanner hooked up on cold engine no misfire fir the first 20 seconds , than as it warns up the misfire count starts. I put it in reverse or any gear wild park at idle n still misfire but.. under load you will NOT see a misfire on this pentastar 3.6l engine. Spark plugs are dry n look good I had put a new injector on cylinder one assuming it's in working good than I wonder what's next to check?? Please hope you can guide me also if you haven't come across this particular scenario you'll know more after this. Lol thank you.

Be sure to check for metal particles in your oil filter or the ticking will return. There’s a STAR bulletin S1309000016 that reveals the truth for a version of the Pentastar 3.6.
