Where Are All The Good Mechanics?

Ойын-сауық

Hey Good People,
I just got one question? Where are all the good mechanics? I believe there are definitely more of us out there! I don't understand why people are driving hours in search of a good mechanic. I am blessed and fortunate that someone would thing that well of me to make the drive, BUT they shouldn't have to. There should be a great mechanic in every town.
Comment your local auto repair shop below! Let's help those who may be in search of a good shop in their hometown! Love you all!

because of the poor quality of workmanship of mechanics in my area, ive been offering to do work on peoples vehicles within my abilities. ive been wrenching on everything for 30+ yrs and im very capable of doing most repairs. we havent had our vehicles in a shop in 25+ yrs because of a bad experience so since then ive been building my tool collection and knowledge to become more capable. however, im not a mechanic and ive never worked in a shop. i just enjoy the problem solving aspect of the repair. i tell people instead of watching cat videos or people doing stupid people stuff to use yt as a tool to learn a skill. i very much dislike yt policies and politics but its a great platform for educating yourself. everyone have a Happy Independance Day!!!! try and keep all 10 of your digits and your eyeballs.

Did all 4 oxygen sensors on a 2006 Mustang V6 just 2 days ago as well as the MAF sensor. She said the dealer wanted $1,100 for parts and and other indy shop wanted to charge her $800 for parts. It is literally 4 Bosch sensors. I paid almost $200 for the sensors and maf sensor and put everything in 90 minutes. Charged the customer $400. Customer asked how was I able to do the job so cheap? I showed her the receipt from Autozone for what the parts cost me. Then I told her I do not upcharge for parts since I am a mobile mechanic meaning I have no overhead.

I said ok we'll that's not it. Got back from vacation, checked it out. Maaan, it was the alternator. You could literally see the pully jumping around. Changed the alternator noise gone.

I am a decent mechanic, I used to work from home, mainly in my driveway. I retired at 35, went to college and got my automotive repair degree, worked on family, neighbors, and friends cars only. I barely earned anything as it was something to keep me busy and save people some money. Over the course of 4 years, I had saved my peeps about $175k from going to shops. I have been involved in a couple of lawsuits one against a shop that almost killed my buddy and lied about doing a repair, and broke stuff and charged him for it. Currently involved in another with a dealer knowingly sold a friend of mine a truck with a blown headgasket. I am constantly being harrassed for having multiple cars in my driveway. I always made it a point to follow city ordinances, they recently changed some and did not announce it and caught me up on those. Now I am not allowed to even work on my own car at my own house!!!

I know plenty of good mechanics however three of the five of them have poor diagnostic skills. That is not a knock on these men it's usually more an issue of time constraint between perceived time pressure of the employer or actual time pressure of the customer. What ends up happening if they do a brief diagnostic and then throw a bunch of parts at the problem and see what sticks. This works about 80% of the time. Fortunately for me I have developed really good diagnostic skills over the years so I take my car in and tell them exactly what I want done If it fails it's on me I have had great results 99% of the time. The second factor in a lot of failed solutions are the parts themselves sometimes as consumers we try to be as cost-effective as possible but end up paying twice It's important to get good parts Make your life and the life of your mechanic easier.

They (good ones) all seem to be on YT! There's you; Eric O/SMA; Ivan/PHAD; Royalty; Dave's; JT/OMT; Rainman; Naptown Tuner; Humble Mechanic... Probably a lot I've forgotten or never seen. But still that's an extreme minority of hundreds of thousands of mechanics out there. To me mechanics are basically like *any* profession or position out there. Only a very small minority of people are actually ever good at a given job, and even fewer of them actually like what they're doing or care about it further than their paycheque. Doesn't matter if it's job crunching numbers in an office; or a mechanic working on cars; a surgeon working on...people; a guy loading boxes in a warehouse; or what have you. But perhaps I have a cynical and dim view of the world lol. I like this channel because you almost always start by calling the audience "good people" and have an overall awesome attitude--it's inspiring!

I’ve been trying to get help with/properly diagnosis of my transmission for the past six months. I’ve only taken my vehicle to two different shops, but I am afraid to take it to any other shops. Because both shops said that all they did was drive my car their diagnosis was internal failure of my transmission. But they didn’t even pull the pan. I’ve pulled the pan myself and there’s no metal and the fluid looks fine. I asked these two different shops if they did any kind of diagnostics other than drive it and they said no. They said they could tell just by driving it that there was internal failure and that the only solution they were giving me was new transmission. For my car that still runs and drives. So if anyone in Boise Idaho or surrounding areas knows of a good honest transmission shop. I would love to give them my business. Thanks you so much.

@@JimSix-jo6hf So I can totally get parts myself. I was just hoping for some definitive direction from a shop as in: your solenoids need replacing or your torque converter is bad. But just driving the Sentra and telling me the transmission is bad and that you’ll sell me a new one does me no good. So at this point I’m gonna end up pulling the transmission and replacing everything. It’s a 2004 Nissan Sentra 1.8 and it does have 200,000 miles on it so I absolutely understand that the transmission could probably go for a rebuild. I do understand that and that’s probably what I’m going to end up doing myself since no one will give me any direction as to what the failing part/parts are. It says on Amco’s website that they will not suggest a new transmission or rebuild till they properly diagnose your transmission. It actually says that right on their website. I took it to Amco and the guy drove it and told me that just based on driving it, there was internal failure and he would have to replace the transmission. I was like well I’ve pulled the pan, there’s no sparkles, no chunks of metal. I was like, it’s having trouble shifting so it’s probably the solenoids or something?. Yeah it might be but based on the age of mileage on it the only service I’ll offer you is a new transmission. I was like wow….

I hate to double comment but after reading the rest one of the softer well known motivational quotes popped in my head. It’s really relevant right now, “Be the change you want to see in the industry (changed world)”. Every video comment section in some way has been mostly negativity with the exception of guys like Alex getting compliments. I will say I do comment if I see stuff done wrong but not on Alex’s channel and there’s a few more. However when you have others showing their jobs and they are doing everything completely wrong and saying stuff completely wrong. An example is talking about how checking most trans are checking hit while running but is doing on a Honda. But the some is doing something that isn’t the common way but doesn’t harm the vehicle I’m not gonna say nothing because it won’t hurt anyone without knowledge that watches. These comments mostly start with master tech here or 35 year dodge mechanic. Then theirs comments like these. Talking about what’s going on with pay. Ok than try something. Everyone want good guys. Take an interview and say it’s gonna take this for pay to go up (union guys sorry). Then if the do it offer to start at your shop for the same if you want. Complacency is killing our industry. Then I would bet my left you know that half the guys that complain about the new guys never teach them anything. I mean ACTUALLY teach them something. Then , once a month tell us in person or in the comments about the best tech you ever knew who trained, we can’t fix everything but there are things we can do to make changes.

Told her I could have been a douche and said yeah you need new plugs and charged her $200 and made $150 in 20-30 minutes...but that is not how you do business ma'am. Another woman with a 2015 Passat was told her brakes were dangerously low and was qouted $500 parts and labor. I quote $250 and show up and pull all the pads to show the customer them compared to the new pads. Old pads had like 50% left. Told the customer there is no need to change your brakes. Happy late independence day! Honestly, this is all a right to reapir problem. If points driven, carbureted, inline 6 engines were the standard, repairs and the knowledge to do them would be ubiquitous with driving itself. No secrets, everything out in the open, the govt should have free emissions testing facillities to help with perfecting each individual cars stoichiometric ratio using emission for maximum power and fuel economy out of these air pumps. I was born in 98, but i understand the world we came from, and where we are at now. I believe that the problem is all of the computers and efi. Leaded gas went away long ago, and unsulfered gas went away 98 (where the reduced smog came from). I honestly believe that if we had standardized the old ford 300, and slant 6 chevy and dodge towers of power, and maybe the amc 4.2 (or christler 4.0 with a 4.2 intake?) there never would be this huge repair issue. Plus more parts more problems, if our main concern (as a society) was the environmental impact. Why shouldnt we consider all of the waste that goes into r&d and the production of all these different new parts. If we just kept it stupid simple crank windows, no a/c (not that there is any reason any ice shouldnt have ac installed), we could really fix the state of the repair/self travel industry. It needs a complete overhaul. Same as every other major system we currently count on, that are all going out on us due to simple entropy, combined with planned obsolescence. Its maddening how we as a species cant produce things that last the way we used to, while continuing to "improve" technology. Imo the only solution is to go back 150 years+ and start fresh by looking at all of the ideas that got us to where we are. We will have to figure it out eventually. Its just biblical. 😢😅😂

Alex...we are a dying breed. More bad mechanics are on the way. The mechanic/technician shortage WILL produce more bad mechanics. Chirp noise on an ls based engine is usually...cam and lifters. Hey, that trans issue, believe it or not...a fluid change COULD fix it. Theres a GM bulliten to change the fluid to a mobile 1 hp sythetic fluid. Ive personally seen it work on a suburban like that. Horrible shifting, slipping and ramming into gears, real bad. I told the customer we could try the fluid, with no guarantee before a trans. Replace, they said go for it. It fixed it! Depending on if its a 6 speed or 8 speed there are also valve body or valve body harness issues. But that hp fluid is amazing. It happens more in hotter climates, the fluid issue.

There's an incentive for quick, easy and ineffective work. The broken car market means that shops are backlogged. Junk cars are a better deal than a new car if you can find a mechanic that will help you select the right car and plan the project. Used car dealers prefer to hide rather than repair problems. I recommend Taller Mecánico Cesar in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, right across the border from Del Rio, Texas. His labor rate is MXN 500 per hour ~ USD$27 per hour, he is honest and thorough. Buy your parts in Del Rio, NOT in Mexico. I also recommend NisFormance in Mebane, NC if you need a mechanic than can outsmart Nissan's poor decisions.
