This video shows how to disassemble a Symmons Temptrol unit as I also show how to replace a broken diverter valve. The Temptrol is a great unit but sometimes you need to replace certain parts that break over the years. The house that I fixed this in was built in 2000 so I'm taking that it took 17 years for the diverter valve to break. It's a really easy fix.

    Try to spray some vinegar in there to get rid of calcium/buildup. Then try getting it out again. If not, spray some WD40 and try to grab onto it carefully with pliers and try pulling it out

    Incredibly helpful. Focused on the problem at hand - how to replace the Temptrol Diverter/Volume Control Lever Handle. Best I've found on YT. Pleasant/relaxed presentation style, explains every step, shows every step and was as brief as necessary. Thanks a lot! Three suggestions: (1) Change title to replacing the diverter valve Handle. You should have 1000 likes but some may be frustrated because you only cover the handle replacement (not the the entire valve replacement). (2) Consider adding plumbers putty or a similar sealant to the back top of the face plate before screwing it back in. That little bit of putty will keep water from dripping down the wall or from the shower head and potentially getting behind the face plate and into the wall. (3) The video starts out of focus and not centered, but the rest of it is perfect. That start may keep some viewers from watching the rest. Too bad because the rest of it was great!

    I have the new tri star handle version of that so the cap is on the bottom so when I take the cap off there’s something else also do I take the hot and cold water off around The Who,e house in order to do this

    You can if you want. There might be a hot and cold shutoff near the shower right behind the supply pipes (usually behind a small door or in a closet)

    very good instruction but I had a problem putting the cover back on while trying to line up the the diverter shaft. The clip holding it to the cover is getting in the way. I assume I'm doing something wrong but I also noticed there was no clip on the old diverter, which could be why it broke. Suggestions?

  • @EricDIY

    @EricDIY

    The clip should go all the way on the cover before you put it back on.

    @@EricDIY Thanks for your quick response. I'm not sure I'm getting what all the way on the cover means. I tried both fitting it over the outer cover with the logo etc. and fitting it under outer cover and on the round flange of the inner The problem is the clip sticks out and against the cover to the cartridge over the spindle and I can't lever it the cover into position. There was no existing clip so I had no way to see how it should look.. At the moment I don't have any cover on at all but the diverter works with the clip in place. not sure what to try next. I probably need to replace the whole assembly since the diverter doesn't divert all the water no matter whether its letting water into the tub or shower.

    I just looked at your video again and realized I put the cover over the spindle on before I tried to put the larger cover on first. That should make a real difference. I'll try it a little later when I have the time.

    If I ever have to replace the valve (which I did at my old house) I will be glad to post it as it is a pain if you don't know how to do it especially seeing that it takes a special tool to unseat it.

    I would like to see how the actual diverter valve is replaced as it looks like it's part of the soldered unit. The gaskets are squeaky and freezing up with time.

  • @EricDIY

    You need to use them every now and then or else the rubber seals and washers dry out. You can put Vaseline in then when you install them to help with this.

    Thanx Eric, but your video only replaces the diverter handle ... how does the plastic diverter come out to be lubricated? That would be a great vid. I use the shower daily and it's getting tighter and squeaker to divert from tub/shower settings, I'm afraid the plastic handle will snap soon.

    @@karlellison5094 You would need to get the special tool (sell it in official parts stores) and tank it out. You can also use a screw in bolt and then pliers to pry it out. You would do better to replace it as you wear on some parts when taking it out with the special tool
