How to Remove Gas Tank Rust - Yamaha XJ600

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I will be covering the options you have for removing rust inside a metal gas tank. This task turned out to be more challenging than I first anticipated since I discovered that the rust was probably the only things holding the tank together... But you know we found a way to make it work.

Hey for future reference we were recommended to use Kreem coat at the motorcycle shop but ended up using "Red-Kote" to seal the inside of my 93 Xj600 10 years ago. Tank is still coated today never had an issue from the rust again. Similar process as you but when you put the acid in to break down the rust you also put a bunch of bolts or bearings in there. And shake the shit out of the tank, it will help knock all of that rust and debri loose. Than you wash it out, than use denatured alcohol to rinse it out to get rid of any left over water. Once its dry you pour the Red Kote in and slowly turn and tilt the tank around and the red kote will make a film coating on the inside that will dry and reseal the inside of the tank indefinitely.

Sounds like an awesome product. I’m going to have to revisit the gas tank on the XJ600 because it still has tiny holes left by the rust removal. For longevity purposes I’m certainly considering coating the tank. Thanks for the insights!

@@Calvinm no problem bro, I do see tanks pop up on ebay occasionally but matching the paint is usually hard the paint codes changed every few years but generally anything from 92-97 will be the same part #wise. You can ask over on the XJrider forum also in the classifieds. Guys have like garages and barns with spare parts. Also the can of Red Kote is like 60$ I think. The Kreem Coat kit is closer to 100 i think but both have good feedback

Been checking in on some of your videos. Thanks for sharing! I used vinegar, baking soda and BB's and pressure washed the tank thereafter. I bought a tank sealer I plan to apply in a few days. So far, so good. :)

My buddy's first bike was a seca 2! From what I can hear, yours definitely sounds like it's not running all 4 cylinders. I'd check by running it for a little and then tapping the headers to feel with your hands if they're hot

Thanks for having a listen! I tried touching the headers quickly and all seemed equally hot, but maybe I need a infrared heat gun to assess each cylinder temp more accurately.

Hello from Ireland I'm a budget xj owner too viniger and JB weld cool 👍,,a little tip after tank is removed a good way to prime the carbs is to inject fuel into the fuel gallery pipe to fill the bowls it saves cranking and battery drain

Pressure wash what you can. Get out what you can refill with water toilet bowl cleaner and fabuloso. You won't regret it. Tried this cause I heard of flash rust after drying with vinegar

@@Calvinm I'd be terrified of fuel leaking and catching fire, maybe the tank would right it off. I'm in Ireland and not much of a bike market too, however we have the best Road racers in the world.
