How to REGLAZE AND REFIRE pottery including glaze combinations!

In this video, I show you how to use hairspray on your pots, in order to get the glaze to adhere to an already glaze fired piece. I also share the glaze combinations that I used from Amaco, Mayco and Spectrum while i apply each layer.
Please note that it takes a lot longer for the first coat to dry so be patient or use a heat gun. Refires are so cool because they cant be duplicated typically.
Clay bodies used are bmix and speckled buff both by Laguna.
Fired to a cone 6 using a slow cool schedule.
Hope you enjoy it. Have fun creating 🥰

What a great idea. This is the first time I've heard of using hairspray. I'm going to try it when I reglaze something. Thanks for sharing.

Oh awesome! So glad! It really helps the glaze adhere to the pot…drying time is slow but well worth it!

My glaze flaked rather badly in my last firing. Would spraying with hairspray work. I'm going to try it. Fingers crossed for a happy ending 😊

It should! The hairspray allows new glaze to adhere to the pot after it’s been glaze fired. When you say flaked what do you mean? Did the finished piece have like bald spots? Which glazes did you use? Maybe I can help!

Thank you for posting this. When re glazing, will the piece primarily show the new combo or will the new interact with the first glaze? I am thinking about just adding dabs of new colour to compliment the original (slightly boring).

  • @thehappyhomesteadnh

Welcome! It will definitely not be the same - some of the first glazes may appear but will interact with the new glazes and the first glazes will run more down the piece the second firing. Re glazes are really one of a kind because u can’t re create them! Have fun with it! It’s a fun process and will def give the piece a face lift 😍 just make sure to add enough the second time around!

Great video. Do you just set the piece on the shelf, or use stilts. If I don't use stilts, my refires seem to crack quite often?

So interesting 🤔 yes right on the shelf or on a cookie. Sometimes on stilts. Do you open the kiln too early? I’ve had cracking when opening too early (can’t help it 😂) - do they crack on the bottom of the piece? What are you firing to?

Can you hairspray, leave it to dry overnight, and then reglazr? I'm in a shared studio and just did a quick spray before leaving today assuming it needed to dry....

Good question! I usually let it dry for like 15 seconds because I want it to adhere right away..I’m sure you could leave it overnight and apply the glaze tomorrow. Just maybe lightly touch your finger to the pot to see if it’s still sticky…and spray it again if you need to. It doesn’t have to sit more than a minute! Hope this helps 😚

Hi. I've never heard of using hairspray. Interesting. I just opened the kiln with a glaze firing. On one or two of my pieces, the glaze has flaked off. I know I have to sand them back. Would hairspray help? I might have to experiment 🤔

  • @thehappyhomesteadnh

Hi! You could hairspray them then re glaze them for another glaze firing. I would get a good 3 coats of new glaze on there and maybe use different glazes than the original to get some cool effects! Would be a fun experiment 😍

Why are you reglazing? I love this possibility if I'm not happy with a first result? What % of the original showed through? Do they combine in the second fire?

  • @thehappyhomesteadnh

Lol because I wasn’t crazy about the way it came out the first time..it’s hard to say what percentage showed through. They all combine together and it’s really one big GUESS 😂 or calculated guess 😉

Hi Rick! Yes there’s a 30 minute hold at peak temp…I can share the firing schedule I use for the slow cool, if you’re interested. There are 6 segments. I needed it due to pinholes on the speckled buff. Ever since I started using the slow cool schedule, no more pinholes!
