Black Lamount I have the Fat PS3 too, though it’s a fairly recent acquisition. I was actually sent it by Jay (who you may have seen in the comments here from time to time). He said if I could fix it I could keep it. He sent me another one too but unfortunately it was DOA. I think that one’s GPU was fried.

Not gonna lie PS3 and PS2 are the best consoles of all time, and they were so big hit, and a success but Sony didn't realize it and discontinued PS3 big updates to games, it's sad, but because of those super tech consoles super hit people goed in Sony instead of Xbox side that's the only reason they buy other consoles now such as ps4 ps5 and PS3 compared to ps2 is SO BIG HIT like ps4 is nothing compared to ps3

This quarantine got me plugging in my old ps3 lmao. These games bringing back old memories. Ahh how i miss the old days

Thank you for this, I kept getting the blank screen and wasn't aware of the need for a splitter like this. I ordered this splitter, rather than having another plug for the power i just plugged it into the USB port of the PS3 to power it.

Where was this back then when I actually needed it!? This would've helped so much. Still, great video.

Since there will probably be no college football this year I want to upload highlights of my college football games I've been playing on NCAA 14. I think it would be alot of fun putting together a video like that.

Does it automatically start recording on its own? is there some buttons to push make it start recording on to the capture card? in what format does record onto the capture card? I'd like to transfer it to my PS5 sharefactory and edit it there. Do I use the same capture card like the one in your video?

Any possibility of recording the gameplay straight to usb stick (onto built in memory card)? I don‘t want to turn on console and PC at the same time.

Is this still working in 2020? I heard a patch updated PS3 to HDCP 2.3 and these splitters might not work anymore, but wanted to confirm before I buy a splitter

I've had no issues with audio. It could depend what you have in your setup chain, though. Running a 5.1 system and trying to use a capture card in stereo can cause all sorts of issues. Thankfully they can be easily overcome in most cases.

Where can i get a spitter for a PS3? I really want to record on my PS3 but idk how. And when i get the spitter, do i just plug it into the TV then into the PS3? Nvm, i just watched that part! Thank you so much Joe!!

The Splitter I use is listed here: amzn.to/2S8vt2T I used that splitter to capture the gameplay in the video. You can also find it listed in the description of this video should you ever need to. You would go from the PS3 to the splitter, then from the splitter to the TV. You also need a capture device to capture the gameplay, though. That would be attached to the second output from the splitter. There are other ways to do it, but I've found that to be the easiest setup. There are many capture devices if you haven't already got one but the one you get will depend on your setup and budget. I can advise you on that if necessary. Hope that helps.

hey joe. would you happen to know if using a splitter specifically marked as outputting 4k would cause any issues? in other words, do i need a splitter capable of *at least* 1080p or *exactly* 1080p? thanks for the guide.

That's a complicated question. Basically, you need a splitter that will strip HDCP. The trouble is that splitters don't generally advertise that they strip HDCP, so it's often trial and error finding the right splitter.

@@JoeChip indeed. i tried two different splitters, neither of which stripped hdcp, but after digging around in the garage i found a random piece of junk hdmi converter thing i bought years ago that i didn't even end up using for the application i bought it for, but it just so happened to be one of those elusive devices that strips hdcp. all's well that ends well! and thanks again for your response!

Thank you 👍 It really all depends on how you have it set up. My standalone capture device (Hauppauge HD Rocket) has a mic input, so you could do it that way. Alternatively, use a phone or external mic to record seperate audio in real time. That’s harder to do as you need to sync the audio during editing, which can be time consuming if you don’t remember to set up sync points (I usually move the thumbstick around the screen while recording the sound of it by holding it up to the mic), but it can result in better quality audio if you use a decent mic. Hope that helps.

Well, you could record with a tablet or a camera and a tripod would help with that but it won’t look as good as footage from dedicated capture device.

Your best bet would probably be to try to get a second hand one from ebay. You can usually find a few on there. I'd go with Elgato, hauppauge or Avermedia as they all have pretty decent reputations. Go for one of the older ones as you won't need the newer functionality for the PS3.

I use a Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket. Not sure it’s still on sale but you could find one on eBay, I expect. You can use it standalone with a usb stick, then import the files to pretty much any video editor, so in that sense it would work with a Mac.

So the way I normally do it with my Series S is Series S to Elgato, Elgato to monitor and PC. Would I be correct in thinking this would just work as PS3 to splitter, splitter to Elgato, Elgato to monitor/PC? It's a third HDMI cable but it beats reworking my entire setup when I want to record PS3.

Yes, you’re going to need some way to edit and upload the footage. I’m pretty certain you’re not going to be able to take footage from the PS3 and edit it on the PS4 (though I’ve not actually tried). To be honest, the editing capabilities of the PS4 are pretty rudimentary anyway.

I use a Hauppauge HD PVR-Rocket and an Elgato 4K60Pro. The Hauppauge is perfectly adequate for PS3 capture, though.

@JoeChip so here's an odd one for ya, Im currently able to capture PS3 gameplay without a splitter, I just plugged it in to the back of a $10 USD capture card and it shows up in obs. Only down side is it wont capture audio, but it still lets the audio pass through to my monitor so I just capture it with my stream Mic lol. IDK way its working like this, I actually suspect its the capture card because the audio works with nothing but yeah.

2021, ps5 came. Still have ps 1 and 3 but happy✨

I’m trying to record my gaming since I’m using gameshare on PS4 but i know some games like yakuza series at the end it won’t let u gameshare that part so I’m thinking of the easiest n not expensive way to record any gaming and to make myself go further into my KZread channel and be happy what I will have

Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket. It’s quite old now.

I got the Orei 1x2 hdmi splitter w/EDID, I got the ps3 showing on my tv but it is black screen on my laptop.

Do you need to go to the monitor and the capture card separately? The capture card has the HDMI out that goes to your monitor doesn't it?

Yes, generally you would go from the PS3 to your splitter, then from the splitter to the capture card and from the capture card to your TV. I do it slightly differently because my setup is quite complicated but that will work.

Not necessarily. You have to be able to strip out HDCP copy protection. I honestly don’t know if the item you intend to order can do that. It’s a very grey area because media companies, in particular, frown on any product that strips HDCP from the signal. I understand why but it’s a pain in the rear.

So it will just start recording automatically? Or do I need to push a button to begin recording?

Normally you’d need to press a button, or if you are using an internal capture card you would select the option to record in the software.

I am guessing this works for PS 1 & PS 2 as well. And you just run the capture card box to your PC and then use something like OBS to record the video? Or the 'capture card' just saves all the video..??

It's a bit different (and more difficult) with earlier consoles as they don't use HDMI for their output. You'd need to make sure the equipment you use supports the different outputs (S-Video or component with the PS2, and S-Video with the PS1, if I remember correctly). You can get HDMI conversion cables that work pretty well. They won't give you the absolute best picture but it's worth a try. Just do a search for PS1 or PS2 HDMI leads.

Depending on the capture card you use, you can record a voiceover in real time. Or you could record one using a PC later. You could even set up a mic and record that in real time or later, after you finish. There are a lot of options and you are only really restricted by the kind of content you want to make.

Most capture cards will have some way of showing that they are recording. I have had instances where the recording didn't work but they have been few and far between.
