FABRIC REQUIREMENT GENERALIZATION:
Most dining room chairs can be covered using a piece of fabric 27 x 27 inches. Plan to use a piece of fabric 27 inches long by 54 inches wide, which will result in two pieces. For every two chairs you will likely use three-quarters of a yard of fabric, which does not allow for pattern placement matching, not required for most vinyl fabrics.
FOAM REQUIREMENT GENERALIZATION:
Most dining room chairs use a 1” or 2” thickness of foam that measures 23” x 18”. Sailrite’s High Density Foam can be ordered in a sheet size of 24” x 82” resulting in 4 ½ seat cushions per section of foam. Or use the 36” x 82” foam size and get 6 seat cushions per section of foam.

Can I ask If the vinyl fabric has a grain line? that I should consider about it to make chair seat cover? Because I feel kind of one direction give(expand?) more and the other less.....or Maybe I just feel...

Yes, most faux leather or seating vinyl fabrics have a grain or pattern that runs randomly along the length and width of the fabric. In most situations that grain is not a factor in determining how a vinyl will be applied to an application, but rather what saves the most fabric. It is true, when a grain direction is finally determined (along the width or length) it is typically the followed as the rule for the whole project, just incase it is seen or visible by the end user.

Thanks for the instructions, very helpful. One quick question: can I recover the vinyl chair with fabric straight over the top of the vinyl thats already there? I'm worried that the fabric will slide and stretch over the vinyl and won't last as long, plus not sure on condition of foam underneath although it feels spingy. I like to do a job properly and have offered to cover 6 chairs for free (charity shop that provides for people in need and works with a church) so they can get a good price for the dining set. There is a carpenter on hand to help with removing old staples (loads of them) as my hands can't do it anymore and have a good staple gun to re staple the new top. Sorry for such a long message, sometimes fixate on details, can you tell? Would love some advice. Thanks

Hi Victoria, That is not the preferred method, but it can work in some instances. I probably wouldn't do it in your case since it would be vinyl on vinyl.

I would probably use a turkey cutting electric knife from a department store if you only cutting foam for two chairs.
