this pretty much just described my major depressive episode in 2020 in the beginning of quarantine after I caught a cold, I couldn't do anything. I sat in my room all day, ate chips, gained so much weight while watching youtube videos. I honestly feel so incredibly proud of myself, because I cleaned my room that had garbage everywhere, there was so much you couldn't even see my floor. There were centipedes and other bugs crawling on my floor, and my biggest regret is while I was neglecting myself, I was neglecting my sweet little snake Mike. He did nothing to deserve it and I still beat myself up for it, he would go months without eating. I love seeing how far I've come though, I've been feeding him regularly for an entire year, I go to the gym daily in the morning, and I've lost 60lbs since 2020.

I can't even imagine how my life would look right now if not for the countless times when instead of just doing something that I knew was right, in my mind I played out every possible outcome (99% of which were just projecting my fears) ending up either not doing it in the end, or missing the opportunity...

This video works as a great chart of the progress I’m making from me at my worst. It was initially quite scary to watch as it felt too much of a reminder of my failings. But then I thought I owed myself to face-up to it. And thankfully, it actually had the opposite effect to what I expected. It made me realise how much better I’m doing, how far I’ve come, how I’m progressing, and the things I still need to address. Thanks, great video, great concept. EDIT: I wrote this comment before hearing the sign-off, and yeah, I suspected that was the intent of the video from the beginning, but to hear you say it outright, as an “anti-tutorial” (literally what I thought in my head), shows just how perfectly you executed this film.

I love the utter gut punch of every point being broken up by "Play Runescape" That joke aside, the point about pessimism really resonates. Often self improvement is marred by thoughts of "If you could do this you'd already do so? See, you just made a mistake so you can't do it" and it's an incredibly vicious cycle

@@myleswillis That's the telling part of it: it's repetitive and time-consuming behaviour that doesn't require much effort but feels "productive". The fact that you made more friends on there doesn't mean that it's any more productive for making friends than other things that interest you, it just means you spent more time on Runescape than on those things. I'm realising now myself that if you have more online friends than offline, it's not because you're incapable of making offline friends. It's simply because online ones match with your current patterns of behaviour.

Good video. It's strangely, truly a known exercise to think about how to get the opposite of what you want from life. CGP Grey's version is 7 Ways to Maximise Misery kzread.info/dash/bejne/foNlz7Z-fNLQZtI.html I have some maxims I live by that amongst much other Psychology and Philosophy has really improved my life. "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst" - Unknown, often attributed to Aurelius. Perhaps Disraeli? "We are more often frightened and pained than we are harmed" - Seneca "Who is my master? He who decides what I do or do not like" - Epictetus, born a slave and rose to being the most sought-after Philosopher of his time in ancient Rome. "Be water" - Bruce Lee's philosophy extremely oversimplified. "Do not overly rely on others, for in complete darkness, even your own shadow leaves you" - A very medieval islamic scholar named Ibn Taymiyyah with some disgusting thoughts very much of his time, but also some great quotes like that. "Obsessively hating your enemies is like you yourself drinking poison, then expecting them to die" - unknown, often attributed to Buddha but no clear origin. "If you're going through hell, the best course of action is to keep going" "Solitary trees, if they grow at all, grow strong" - Churchill. I'm putting playlists together on this new 'brand' account in the hope people somehow check them out, and get some use out of them.

@@clickpause8732 Eh, I think this is complicated: 1. Online friendships are a partial, but not a complete, substitute for offline friendships. 2. People vary in how capable they are of forming offline friendships. Some of this is inherent, but a lot of it comes down to what fraction of people in their current offline environment they're well-suited to be friends with. Some of the latter comes down to what sort of offline environment they're currently in (and how capable people are of changing that environment at present varies), and some of it comes down to what fraction of people _in general_ they're well-suited to be friends with. 3. Online friendships are often *much* easier to make for people with unusual sets of needs and capabilities, because the internet lets you filter (not perfectly, but way more efficiently than just about any offline space) for people with specific characteristics, from a truly vast pool of potential contacts. 4. Relatedly, but somewhat distinctly, it also lets you filter for people with _shared interests_ that may be quite uncommon. That's not only true for shared interests that are themselves online, but also for those that aren't -- if you're deeply into weaving (as in, production of woven cloth from yarn or thread), there may be only a handful of people within commuting distance of you who share your passion, and finding even those few may be challenging (not to mention that you may happen to not get along with them for one reason or another). Online? r/weaving has over 45,000 members, and Reddit isn't even a particularly good platform for fiber arts discussions! 5. All of which means that making friends online can be good, insofar as it provides a partial substitute for offline friendships that you _weren't going to have regardless_ (either in general, or specifically with regards to friends who _get you_ when it comes to a particular thing that's important to you), but it can also be bad, insofar as it provides _only_ a partial substitute for offline friendships that you would have otherwise made, had you spent less time online. For a given person, either _or both_ of these may be true.

@@clickpause8732 This was brilliantly said. I recently quit an mmo I had been playing for the past 3 years non-stop. I justified it because it made me feel productive even though it would all amount to nothing one day when I finally was no longer satisfied. I'm now stuck in a game of catch-up as I try to make up for all the lost time that I invested in Realm, that I should've invested in bettering myself and my relationships with the people around me. I'll be alright, but I'm glad I quit when there's still time. MMOs can be quite dangerous of an addiction that can be tough to get out of without the right mindset.

It’s good to take steps and limit some of those forms of entertainment, changing the time spent on that to something more productive for you. I always think about how much of my goals would be completed if I didn’t focus so much on being entertained.

What if you have a skin disease that keeps you from socializing? What if you CAN'T overcome it, bc people laugh and or stare. And this is where it gets interesting - using antiacne creams make my face appear to look normal again, but it isn't permanent. It can change during temperature changes, or just because, and you're back to square one, people looking at you with pity, laughing or just simply staring, avoiding you. I've been diagnosed with BDD, but I don't believe I have it, the hospital I was in struggled so much to come up with a diagnosis, and this was in 2006, mind you, in a time when NONE of the psychiatrists I was going to even knew what that was. My face can appear normal, but also can appear too childish for my age and puffy + ugly. That's when people stare. I never had a woman. I was mercilessly being bullied in highschool bc of my illness. Yes, I resent people, hide in my room, and I'm 34 now. I can't snap out of it. All I can do is live with this face and feel the pain of life passing me by. So, what if all you tried failed? And I tried many things. I failed at life, hate this life, people (who laugh at the thing I cannot change), and have no support from my family. I have no goals and nothing brings me joy anymore. My depression is so severe that without meds I would lie in bed 24/7, constantly thinking negatively. I love those videos such as this, bc they are for normal people, but not for those condemned to be ridiculed. Some say "ignore them", you can't, at some point you just can't.

@@belladonnahigh9206 “CAN’T overcome it” is bullshit. I don’t want to be too harsh, but if you say that you CAN’T overcome something, then thats the reason you can’t. I’m not going to tell you to just ignore the assholes, because obviously that’s a monumentally hard task, but you CAN overcome it through consistent action. Start going out more, bit by bit, as much as you can possibly tolerate, every day. Don’t try and cover your face, don’t try and disappear into the crowd. Talk to people, it doesn’t matter if it’s awkward, just start talking more. Start assuming the best in people rather than the worst. Don’t assume someone is an ass unless they prove themselves to be, and if they are an ass, move on. It’s very hard to do, and I doubt there’s many that could pull it off without failing over and over, but you need to accept those failures and keep trying. Otherwise, you’ll never dig yourself out of that hole, or even see the light at the top.

It is very important to know these darker aspects of ourselves and know how to avoid them. Personally, I was struggling with overthinking, being secretive, avoiding conflict and being pessimistic a lot. little did I know that the things that I had eating up my mind were actually a thing. We have to acknowledge that as human beings we have to deal with these parts of ourselves and know how to deal with them.

The more the video continued, the more I realized I've been consciously and subconsciously doing this to myself for half my life, slowly but surely. It's gotten so bad that I find myself in bed 70% of the day and only finding the energy to do things I have no choice but to do. I don't have goals, I don't have friends, no job or education and I have an extremely destructive and addictive personality that's turned me into a consumer, everyday it feels like I'm stuck in a loop of the same hell I've built for myself. I've given up on every dream I've had, squandered every opportunity I was given to succeed, pushed everybody away to "protect" myself which in the end was a load of bullshit because it did way more damage than I could've protected myself from. I've developed severe depression and anxiety over the years, developed trust issues and pair that up with overthinking it makes it hard to believe anything that comes from someone who claims to care about me. I grew up an optimist, but have slowly turned myself into the pessimist that I am today. As bad as it all feels for me, at least I don't play runescape. Jokes aside though, the only reason I haven't given up on life is due to the fact that I don't know what any of that feels like, to be successful, healthy, loved, happy and progressing through life in a way where I feel safe within my own mind and life, if anything its definitely worth striving for, its the best parts of life I see no reason to let your life end without having experienced those things one way or another. All in all I hope everyone lost like me or lost in general finds their way. 🖤

Don't get me wrong, it's going to be hard as fuck to break those habits but i've been reading a lot of comments similar to mine and I see that most people are lost in their own way, you're not alone in that struggle, but finding your way through life is what gives your life meaning and no one can walk that path for you, only you can, but there's beauty in the unknown, you already know what it is to suffer, why not find out what is to live and thrive. Biblical explanation of the Gospel: God doesn’t want anybody in hell, but you must understand why we deserve hell and why those who refuse to live under His authority will go there. He gave us the law (Ten Commandments) not to make us righteous, but rather to show us our sin (Romans 3:20). God gave us free will and since Adam sinned in the garden, sin is the nature of our flesh and we ALL have sinned. (Romans 3:23) The law demands death to those who sin (Romans 6:23). Since we have all sinned, we all deserve hell. Revelation 21:8 says that all liars will go to hell. Yes, even if you have lied once in your life, you are sentenced to hell - that's how high God's standards are of moral perfection because God is holy and righteous, there is not one sin in Him. For someone to be justified before holy God they have to be sinless, that's why everyone need Jesus Christ - for He lived a sinless life, died on the cross and rose from the dead on the third day. None of us are good in God’s eyes, because for God good means moral perfection. We all have broken God’s commandments, we all have sinned in our lives so none of us are good. ‘’For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.’’ (James 2:10). Our carnal mind is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's moral law and it never will (Romans 8:7). We hate the thought of God for the same reason a criminal hates a policeman - we know we have sinned against God and are guilty of it and we don't want to be damned. No good works will ever save you. You can't earn salvation by good works, because God will judge us for our sin. Good News is that Jesus Christ lived a perfect, holy, sinless life and He died for our sins according to the Scriptures, He was buried and He was raised from the dead on the third day according to the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.’’ (John 3:16) We aren’t saved by our good works, but only by the grace of God through faith in Christ. ''For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9) Jesus said ‘’it is finished’’ (John 19:30) just before He died on the cross, which means He paid the fine for our sins (past, present, future) to be forgiven only IF we repent and trust in Him. This is how you can get saved from sin and hell - repent of your sins and trust in Jesus Christ. Get to know Him by reading God's Word. So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.” (Luke 11:13) ''What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!'' (Romans 6:15) ''Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out'' (Acts 3:19) Repentance is a turning away from sin and all evil works, and it always results in changed behavior (Luke 3:8). Biblically, a person who repents does not continue willfully in sin. While sorrow from sin is not equivalent to repentance, it is certainly an element of scriptural repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10). Do not play a hypocrite. ''God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.'' (1 John 1:5-6) (John 3:3) Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again." If you have repented and have genuine faith in Jesus Christ then you will receive the gift of Holy Spirit and be born-again spiritually. When you believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession - to the praise of His glory. (Ephesians 1:13-14) Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. (John 3:36) ''You will know them by their fruits'' (Matthew 7) If you have been truly born-again with the Holy Spirit and He has regenerated your heart, you will desire righteousnes - to do what is good and righteous in God's eyes, to seek God everyday in His Word and prayer, to strengthen your relationship with God. You will no longer desire to willfully continue living in sin but will want to obey God out of your love for Him because of His amazing grace revealed to us through the death and resurrection of His Son. ''Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.'' (2 Corinthians 5:17) ''For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.'' (Eph 2:10) You will have a testimony - of what your life had been before and how has it changed now when you have surrendered it to Lord Jesus Christ. As a declaration and affirmation of your faith in Jesus Christ, get baptised in water because He commanded us to do so. In John 3:5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.'' ''Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit'' (Matthew 28:19) ''Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.'' (Acts 2:41) ''And this water symbolizes the baptism that now saves you also - not the removal of dirt from the body, but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God - through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,'' (1 Peter 3:21) ''We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.'' (Romans 6:4) ''Having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.'' (Colossians 2:12) Please get right with God and get to know Jesus Christ personally today before it’s too late, because there’s not much time left! "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.’’ (Mark 13:32) Get to know Christ through God's Word - Bible. At first I recommend reading Gospel of John and book of Romans. God bless you! Jeremiah 29:13 - ''You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.''

Everyone says that it's a bad thing. Avoiding risk. But if you don't have the financial prospects to recover then your better off sticking with potentially safer options. Some people, like me. Stick their heads out. Only to have the police called, get pepper sprayed, and loose thousands of dollars over the course of a week that they never financially recover from.

The video is great for people who have the opportunity to change their life and get better mentally. I know most advices nowdays but i will still watch the video to the end cause of your amazing voice over and rocket league at the start hahaha. Im a drug addict and also have a gaming addiction.. i rarely go out and i broke contacts with all my friends. Have neither a goal nor do i like myself. Cant say that i didnt try to change it. Many times. Did it work? Nope, sadly not. Im still in the same boat. Sometimes i go trough my childhood photos to see how happy i was and how healthy i looked like. I dont wanna talk about sucide here since there are some kids here but i had some crazy stories too. Was homeless for some time, then not again. Its a cycle..Ultimatly life has no goal .. all the advice most nowdays give. That is mainstream advice which is good for people who dont really know what to do. But leads to an endless loop. You should figure out yourself what life you wanna live. Sure all the working out and get friends, travel is good. But some folks are build diffrent. But its good video to save some people like me who are not that far into their addictions

I got scared after realizing that every single of these points apply to me, my life and my way of living. I only opened the video out of curiosity because youtube suggested it, and it genuinely gave me the chills how every single point abd every single line was true about me. Its just really scary to be confronted with it, like, you KNOW how you're living and you know, deep inside, the self destructive things you do and think, but to be so openly confronted about them and made to directly think about it its uncanny, uncomfortable. And kinda sad. Its really making me sad to think about it. You know what you're doing wrong and why your life is miserable, but you cant just suddenly bring yourself to stop doing and thinking the things this video says, because thats just how you've lived your whole life. Its scary.

This hit really hard. I’ve lived my life like this for 3yrs. I’m just depressed and I’m trying to get out of this horrible cycle. I literally avoid risk and I’m scared of exposure. I just hold my self to a high standard and me not meeting that, makes me just want to hide. I shouldn’t care about peoples opinions but sometimes it gets to me when they just point it out and it just bring you down. This type of lifestyle can really ruin friendships and relationships with family. I feel like I hate that I’m such a burden to my parents because I’m such a failure. Most of my highschool peers are graduating from whatever college they went to and here I am just wasting time and my youth. I don’t want pity but I just need to let these emotions out. I lost my old self, I just wanna be happy again.

I feel exactly the same, just 15 years later than you. Took me 10 years to finish my MSc, now doing a PhD for another 5. Something my peers did both within 10 years.... I have accepted it just takes me longer, but the regret of not trying would be worse than the pain I feel right now, feeling incompetent every day thinking why am I so slow in comparison to my peers... Maybe try to develop a FOMO for your goals 🙂 and just remember, we're all gonna die anyway, so not much of what we do matters to anyone because they're worried about themselves. Do it for you as a challenge for yourself. For the high standards part - what helped me (unfortunately) was when enough time had passed and everyone sort of gave up on me I could not meet their expectations anymore, yes it was embarrassing but then I could finally relax, I had nothing to lose and I could do it for me. It is that typical "when you hit the bottom, the only way is up"-thing. You are not alone . Just take a deep breadth and do just the next step that you can. Don't forecast the future. I am not saying one should want my life or that I became great at what I do, but at least it is something, it has waves, ups and downs, good times and bad...and even though I am depressed now, I know it can't stay like this forever. I got myself out of the hell of my MSc degree, I will do the same for the PhD. Pick your own monster to conquer and eat at it one day at a time. FOR YOU. You deserve it. People who love you will love you regardless, people who judge you, will judge you regardless. The only thing that will be different is that you will feel better knowing you gave it your all and with your fight you will inspire other to fight too 💪🏻

Don’t be hard on yourself. Try to count your blessings and practice gratitude. I feel like the problem with this sort of culture is that it focuses only on external judgment of one’s life. Rather than developing peace within ourselves, we let our experiences of the external world dictate how we should feel or how we live or how we should think. Embody the the philosophy that reality is not a problem to be solved but a reality to be experienced, and remember, ALL of this is part of your journey

The message was made more impactful by invoking a tone of antiphrasis, i.e. saying the opposite of what was really meant. We are supposed to be in on the joke from the onset that no one wants to give nor accept advice on how to ruin their lives. Only #1 deals with anything foundational; the rest are basically just bad habits. They may as well have included smoking, drinking, and gambling.

In fact, try to think about it so much that it becomes too complex in your mind is too much to overcome. Then learn to fear it because even the thought is overwhelming. Next, slowly accept that you will never have your dream.

I watched the other video by the same creator uploaded a year ago called “How to make your life miserable”. It was very similar to this one; brutally honest and informative. But at that time, I was deeper in my depression. I was drinking and smoking all day long. No friends, family didn’t know how to help, constantly overdrawing my bank account due to my addictive behaviors. I stole thousands from my family, and the bank. I’m doing better now. Mentally and physically. But not completely there yet. The thing that really frustrates me is that even though I understood everything in the video first hand, I wasn’t able to do anything about it while I was depressed. Only now that I’m better am I able to actually watch it and have it resonate with me. And only now I feel like i’m ready to handle depression in the future. I just wish I could see it then. I wonder how many other people are going through something that need help to get past those temporary emotions. It makes me sad.

Never have I listened to such words that described my entire being in a short 7 minute video. Although I believe I've changed no one else thinks I have, in their mind I'm still the bad person. I made friends purely by chance and lost them immediately when trying to get closer when they realized what I did. Trusting someone and then immediately getting ignored and hated upon for stupid mistakes I regret, hurts immensely which creates this exact worldview which I believe further escalates a problem rather than fixes it. Bad people, remain bad for as long as those unrelenting negative opinions exist all you're left with is a man/woman who will commit same or similar mistakes, because no matter how despicable some form of comfort exists in it. I believe every bad person is only guilty as long as he/she normalizes it. Bad people don't just want forgiveness they just want to be accepted as societally normal.

@@WasifSikder Religion is important for some persons, I'm afraid I don't really believe in man-made religions but those who do I'm glad people can find guidance and support in religious communities. I've come to accept my atheistic beliefs for skeptical philosophy. I don't see bad, and good using those terms is merely an easier understanding of our core values. I'm merely remarking on how "bad" people are and will continue to be ostracized in our cancel culture which does not encourage reform, merely humiliation and shame. People prefer black and white when it comes to right and wrong, is that a bad thing? Absolutely not. Can it be greatly exaggerated towards those who've done wrong? Yes. Ask yourselves how many times you've likely passed a convicted felon of course you don't know but now I ask, who would you assume is a convicted felon? How does that change your opinion when you're able to walk past or even engage with a convicted felon on a walk, in the grocery isle or even your employee. Did they seem like bad people? Certainly some you may say, but not all. That's the problem the more we push ourselves into Right and Wrong mentality everyone who's ever convicted a crime will be seen differently despite the story or regret or guilt they feel and have changed people will always see you as the bad person until they learn crime should not affect a lifetime but it does. Too clarify I'm not saying every bad person deserves forgiveness or more chances than 1-2 as some people unfortunately never see the problem in their behavior and thus never change it. In simplified terms: Good people can be good, good people can be bad, bad people can be good, and bad people can be bad. It's not good person = good because they didn't commit a crime Or Bad person = bad because they committed a crime. There's far more layers than black and white you must take into account the varying shades of gray.

@@Imverybadatyoutube I completely understand your point. But in a world without God, what incentive does one have to be a good person apart from things like how others see them and whether they might get caught? There are many who seem good on the outside, but will do bad the second they are sure no one will find out. Another point is that who even decides what is good? I live in the US, where a hundred years ago, only 10% of people had intimacy before marriage. But today, everyone thinks there's no need to save yourself until marriage. So 98% of Americans today are having intimacy before marriage. But the Bible and Quran speak out against this. And we now have 18 million American children living in single parent homes. Many more adults grew up in single parent homes. And the cycle will just continue as long as everyone agrees that there's nothing especially bad about intimacy before marriage. But God didn't leave us on our own to figure out what is good. God sent us messengers with revelations so we know about God and we know what is good and bad. Messengers include Moses who got the old testament, Jesus who got the new testament, and the final prophet Muhammad SA who got the final testament. And God gave these messengers miracles so we know the message is true. Because Prophet Muhammad SA is the final messenger, and the Quran is the final message, God made the Quran a permanent miracle. And God promised to preserve the Quran so it is never changed. If you want to change a single letter in the Quran, there are an estimated 200 million Muslims who have memorized it who will call you out on it. Compare that to the Bible, where the catholic, protestant, and greek orthodox bibles all have a different number of books. Unlike the Bible, there is only one version of the Quran. And God promises there will never be any changes to it the future as well.

I originally clicked in this video, thinking that it would be an interesting concept to dive into. My first of impressions of the idea of ruining your life was that it was going to be either over-exaggerated or unrealistic, because it would seem you have to be really committed to ruining your life if you really wanted to ruin your life. However, as I listened to all these parts of destructive habits that make up our daily lives, I quickly realised how deeply this connected to me and my life. I have no prominent goals, no courage, no motivation to do the things I originally love or things I need to do to progress in life (which goes to show how pessimistic I have become). I also see it in my friends too, whether it seems very obvious or hidden away from everyone else they hide their destructive habits from. Being cooped up in my own personal bubble has completely ruined my expectations about myself, and now I realised that I have ruined myself before I even stopped to think about it. So thank you Better Ideas, you have really shed some light onto how I can improve myself to better my future and hopefully encourage others to improve their futures if I can.
