This is life changing. I’ve been a chronic procrastinator even though it results in so much anxiety and self hatred. I was told that I procrastinate because “I don’t care enough,” or because I’m “Lazy,” when actually I’m a huge over-thinker. I get completely paralysed by my own mind and the sense that if I think about it enough I’ll be more prepared. Submitting is letting go of your thoughts, your attachment and just focusing on the act. It completely simplifies it in a way that makes it less daunting

My dad is in his mid 70s and has worked out (nearly) daily for 40 years. When I asked him how he had the motivation, he said “I don’t. I turn off my brain and I drive to the gym. I don’t let myself think one thought, I just go. Then once I’m there I get it done and I feel better.” He’s in such great physical health and it’s helped his mental health too. It still took me a long time to follow his advice, but when I do it really does work.

It has taken me years to internalize that it's actually my anxiety that causes all of the "Ugh, I don't want to do this thing, it's going to be so hard, it's going to take me forever" thoughts of procrastination, and now that I know what it is, I find myself acknowledging these thoughts and what they are and then letting them go so I can just get to work. Instead of being trapped by thoughts of "ahhh, I don't want to do this, it's going to be so hard," I now think, "Oh, this is just my anxiety. It's not real. You didn't say it explicitly, but this made me think of the concept of letting go of our ego. My ego holds me back from doing things I know are beneficial in exchange for instant pleasure. I need to feel bigger than I am, and this makes me unable to relax into my obligations. I love the idea of submitting in this context, that's a real game changer. Awesome stuff as usual!

One small line from your video that I think should be emphasized more here is that sense of euphoria when you actually "submit" to doing the scary or hard thing. Its just such a rewarding rush of accomplishment that only fuels and accelerates your willingness to continue to do it more and more. After standing on the cliff staring down for so long, psyching yourself out, when you finally plunge into the cold water the surge of dopamine and "I-can-do-this-ness" is such an empowering feeling for getting over this mental block. This video couldn't have had better timing. I am working on an assignment due today and had 15 days to work on it. Every single time I do this, which is every single time, I ask myself why. I had time to work on it throughout the past two weeks, but I wasted time complaining, worrying about it, and regretting not being more productive. Not only that, it is something I have chosen to do, and I even enjoy it, but I still procrastinate. The idea of submitting to the discomfort first to enjoy the reward later (playing video games, watching a movie, or THIS video) really appeals to me. I'll watch this video once a week until the idea sinks in. Now, I'll get back to my assignment.

I once read this idea from psychology which stated we seek distraction, thus escape, on purpose. Why? Well, in one of my videos I explained how we prefer to keep ourselves busy to avoid uncomfortable feelings rather than facing reality. But I believe in the long run the pain of regret is higher than of facing discomfort for a short moment by taking action. This is what I remind myself of everytime I'm avoiding the thing I should be doing.

It depends on the situation and the action too. I believe people usually escape reality or do silly things to avoid having to face difficult encounters because of trauma or bad experience in the past, or due to a lack of interest in what they are doing. Also taking action is pretty vague because I agree that being distracted and not being able to finish a task and feeling guilt, later on, is way different from making a life-changing decision such as deciding to propose to someone, quitting your job to start a business, etc... it's not simply as "Just do it" just because.

You have literally changed my life and perception of reality with this video. I've struggled with depression and anxiety for many years, which made me live in a state of constant worry and fixation on past and future events. I would always be tensed up and would strain my throat just to speak since I was never relaxed. This is because I was "fighting" the negative feelings of discomfort in my body and mind. After you said the word "submission", what I thought to be my reality just shattered, as I actually let myself accept everything and repeat in my mind that "I'm gonna be ok". It's a very liberating feeling, as for the first time in years I am feeling connected to the present and feel as though I am ready to take on new challenges. Perhaps I have always been like this, but simply needed a reminder and a pat on the back. Thank you so much for this video! Hearing those words meant a lot to me.

I think another thing I needed to learn, in addition to submitting to doing the task, was acceptance that a task might not be "finished" today. I'm writing my dissertation, currently writing the literature review and setting up some experiments. This is a multi-year long project where each task is a week or month long effort and the subtasks can be difficult to properly "chunk" into something that could be considered today's most important thing. It's a little nebulous. Read and summarize one paper might be too little or too much depending on the paper and the other things going on that day. Sometimes making "sufficient" progress for the day is hard to pinpoint and time has to be called when progress has stalled. I had to learn to accept the incomplete progress as "done for today" even if nothing was truly "finished". I kept that chronic anxiety and escapism even when I had done my work. I never turned it off to the point it interrupted my sleep. Accepting work as "finished for now" was just as important for me as learning to submit to making progress in the first place.

Whenever i wake up for school, it feels like I feel like shit whenever i think about getting into the shower but, i dont think that ive ever missed a day where i had to take one just because i was in the moment and centered myself. I listen to music when i am doing this is and to know the feeling that you are doing something that is good for you and is something everyone else would not even try to do is extremely rewarding. When you are in the moment and not thinking about your inner resistance, everything feels much more calmer and it will help you feel more happier and fulfilled as a person. Thanks for this video joey, i have an exam tomorrow and was escaping by listening to music and just letting my resistance get the better of me.

I think the biggest moments of joy that I feel in life come from finally doing the task that I was so afraid to do. All of my vices that hold me back in life that provide positive emotions and even working out and jogging. Those activities never give me that feeling in my body and that boost of happiness that I get after I do something I knew I needed to do but was terrified of it. I'll be on the verge of a panic attack and fighting nausea right before doing a task but afterward I am showered with these positive emotions. Its a very specific kind of feeling, you can identify it if you pay attention when it happens.

This is the mindset I use to get through things that are physically painful (like going through labor & delivery for my 4 children!). Let it hurt. I accept that the current (usually temporary) situation is painful and that I cannot fight my way out of it. I yield to the river. When I stop fighting it, wishing it was over, trying to make it stop, I find that it is easier to endure. It seems less big, less bad. Still uncomfortable, but tolerable if I let the experience be what it is instead of fighting to control or change it.

Great video. I think a deeply-rooted reason we procrastinate is because we have our own internalized expectations of how the thing should go or turn out. I have learned to make the activity as small and unimportant feeling as possible, because that makes it bearable to begin (even if it's a big deal). When we make the activities we want to do and goals we achieve out the be bigger than they are, we make them too intimidating to start because of our fear of failure. Minimizing these things makes it easier to submit to them, and allow ourselves to start. And usually once we start, we see how we are capable of doing them. In chemistry terms, you have to lower the activation energy needed to begin a task. What is the smallest possible piece you can bite off to begin? Momentum can begin from even the smallest of effort.

I appreciate this video so much, thank you. Reminds me a lot of what Adriene says from Yoga with Adriene. She says the hardest thing is getting to the mat. And as someone who could never get into consistent intermittent exercise habits for my whole life. I finally decided to “get to the mat” and her videos guided me through my first month, then my first year, and my second year. I’m still doing yoga every day and it’s been well over 850 days. Yet I’m still such a procrastinator and so prone to escapism into all sorts of media. This video really helped me to breathe and see this similarly to ywa’s “get to the mat” and I feel that this will help me approach that discomfort with mindfulness, let go, and just do the thing. Thanks again 💜

I loved this video! I start my day by reading a memo I wrote stating the one thing that I want most in life. I then proceed to go about my day doing the most important tasks first and so forth. It's not easy and I've only just started doing it recently however through doing so, I am no longer a slave to seeking pleasure from things like KZread and Netflix. I've submitted to the 'cost' of achieving my dreams. Once I'm done with my day and look back on what I've completed throughout the day, I tell myself that I've lived a life in line with my wants & values. This has really helped with my anxiety. Starting my day with my memo and knowing why I have to do things that are difficult makes it so much easier to get them done. Plus if you get the hardest things done first, the day gets easier and easier until you can finish it with a reward of your choice.

I'm 28 and I have been escaping everything for about 6 years of my life, I just didn't have the support for it or the help I needed. Life hit me pretty hard. I'm actually coming up with a resource that helped me become the man I am today. I used to live in Miami around street violence, I used to eat $3 a day, 25 cents noodles, expired toast and canned campbell tomato soup. I survived the Boston Marathon Bombing which was a few feet away and I saw all the blood the people screaming and I was alone at 18. I also used to live in a room with no kitchen, trash bag as a window and bugs crawling on me at night. I also took boxing to protect myself and learned how to defend myself and channel my emotions. Now I live in a cabin in the nordic woods of Sweden where I go down to a lake to breathe and heal my past and I post on KZread to help others who need it the most 🙏🏽💜

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on procrastination and its impact on our lives. It's interesting to think about how our past actions can continue to affect us in the present, and how our tendency to put things off can impact our overall quality of life. Your suggestion to do the most important thing first in order to change the narrative of our lives is a great one. It can be difficult to overcome procrastination, but finding emotional tactics, like submission to the task at hand, can be a helpful way to overcome it. Thanks for sharing your insights!
