There seems to be a LOT of controversy around the surgical mask and just how it is to be worn. Nurses, healthcare providers, patient's and family/visitors all need to know how to wear the surgical mask while in the hospital correctly to ensure they are protecting both themselves and others around them.
Make no mistake. There is a right way. Blue has always been on the outside.
If you are using a single ply mask you will not have two colors. Instead, your mask will be the same color on both sides. There is no filter in a single-ply mask.
Surgical masks are designed to offer two-way protection by filtering out microns and acting as a physical barrier between the healthcare provider and the patient. Surgical masks are loose-fitting disposable masks and they help stop large droplets from being spread by the person who is wearing it. They are not designed to seal tightly around your face or prevent inhalation of small airborne contaminants. Surgical masks not the same as respirators.
@mimi brought up a good point, so I will add some more content here to clarify water resistant
water-resistant is not waterproof, the inside layer will stay dry for a short time as the inner lining is eventually going to absorb water, sweat, and spit (should you feel so included to do so) and becomes ineffective once damp. They are not to be used 24 hours though, as the manufacturer for this mask recommends to change it after 20 to 30 minutes for the very reason that our breath creates moisture and will render the mask ineffective over time

    So. the surgical mask when worn correctly [with the blue part out, acts] "as a physical barrier between the healthcare provider and the patient." And it "help stop large droplets [>5 micrometre in size] from being spread by the person who is wearing it". It was educational. I loved how you explained with demonstration on the parts of the mask and proper doning and removing of the mask. Thank you for posting this video!

    Well done :) ONE MORE THING to prevent fogging and air blowing up into your face and eyes when you breath out: Tie the top part LOOSE and after it is tied, reposition the metal part to seal over your nose bridge. Often when the top strings are tied the contour over the nose is displaced and air leaks back to the eyes and glasses :)

    Excellent video it should be regularly shown on tv or as an ad on the Internet. As masks are being worn by the public it would be simpler if they printed on the mask “inside” and “outside”. All these masks in the uk seem to have elastic ear loops which I can’t keep on because my ears are small with no lobes. My solution is to cut off the elastic from old masks, tie them together, then make a loop through the ear loops on the new mask. Essentially I have one long piece of elastic that goes round the back of my head. Makes it a little more challenging to put on correctly but it is possible.

    My masks are similar but with green on one side with folds down and the metal strip showing at top of mask and white on the inside with folds facing up. It seemed strange having color and strip on the outside but that was only way to get the outside folds facing down. I'm sure to get smirks that it looks like it is on backwards though. A change I have made is to instead of ties at back of head and neck, I pre-tie each side together to proper length and cut off excess. I can then loop around each ear and it fits well. Thanks for not assuming we all know what we are doing when it comes to properly wearing a mask. Once I get to the end of this supply, I will make some cloth ones (after extensive research).

    As far as I know, doctors and nurses wear the blue out to avoid the patient to be infected when they have an open surgery procedure. When your body is opened, anything coming in must be avoided to avoid infections and it will have a tendency that droplets from nurses and doctors to go to the patient so which is why the inner part is waterproof also as the nurse demonstrate it here, to avoid spits, saliva, or any droplets to go to the patient.

    The masks can be work in many situations. Post surgery is not an indication to wear a mask. If the nurse has a cough or feels unwell (but without a fever - like maybe their nose is congested), they may wear a mask to protect patients.

  • @NurseMinder

    @NurseMinder

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@JekylViovicente no. the white color is never on the outside. When we put masks on our patients (because sometimes they have to wear them too when the leave their room) the blue is always on the outside. It is not a matter of only one side providing protection. The blue side has pleats that go down. This is an additional feature to prevent droplets from collecting. If you wear the white to the outside, the pleats will be up and you will collect and hold droplets making the transmission more likely. White is always on the inside. Now not all masks have three layers and that is an entirely different conversation.

    It will depend on the manufacturer information for your mask. Some have two layers, others have three, and then still others have more protective elements such as the N95 that can filter our smaller particles. • @NurseMinder

    @NurseMinder

    4 жыл бұрын

    The blue side is always on the outside. The surgical mask protects from large droplets. We are in new territory with Corona Virus and the research is still coming out. As a healthcare provider we use a mix of surgical masks and N95 mask - depending on the patient status and care activities. In the community, the WHO, the CDC are the go to guides. There is a suggestion that wearing a mask will protect others from you if you have symptoms and are coughing, etc. If you can keep the 2 meter distance, at this time, the research shows there is no need for a mask.

  • @rajeshwarsharma1716
    @rajeshwarsharma17164 жыл бұрын

    Please correct me on this. The surgical mask was designed to stop the wearer, ie surgeon, from spreading germs to the patient, esp during operation and other risky procedures in which the patient was at higher risk of exposure from the surgeon. If this is so than to protect ourselves we need to reverse wear it, i.e wear the blue side inside. Has there any research in this? Or the outer layer and inner layer are made of the same material but just coloured differently?

  • @NurseMinder

    @NurseMinder

    4 жыл бұрын

    A mask provides two way protection. The surgical mask has a filter and that is an important distinction from a general mask (one layer). The filter is used to protect the wearer from droplets in the air. The mask also helps the patient when the wearer has an illness as it acts as a barrier.

  • @rajeshwarsharma1716

    @rajeshwarsharma1716

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@NurseMinder i understand about the filter but can you please answer the question about the outer blue colored layer? Should it be changed to protect self unlike the surgeon whose aim is to stop infecting the patient. So logic implies that to protect self the blue layer needs to be worn inside, unless the materials of inner and outer layers are same, then it foes not matter. In such case the colour blue is just a marker.

    NurseMinder my biggest concern is this; initially the suggestion of, the person wearing the mask is protecting others from them. If the wearer of the mask is touching the inside of the mask and then everything that they encounter (surfaces at the grocery store or pharmacy ) , aren’t we creating a vehicle for the germs. Almost every person I see go into a store touches the inside of a dirty mask and does not wash his or her hands. I personally think we are better off, with no mask and very limited talking, which would cause a decrease in droplet production.

  • @NurseMinder

    @NurseMinder

    4 жыл бұрын

    I wonder if this will help (see link). The mask provides protection to both the wearer and those around them. If people are touching their dirty masks, then they are ineffective for preventing spread of microorganisms via contact (as they will become the transport medium from mask to counter etc). Hand washing is most effective to stop this while replacing the mask

    This doesn't help... Other nurses says put it the way and this nurse says wear it the other. As long as I have it on my face I'm okay. I don't really see many nurses and doctors wear it her way.

    sorry you did not have the information ahead of time. There are a lot of people who wear the mask inside out, upside down and will still have some benefit
