How to Wear an N95 Mask: Donning and Doffing (nursing skills)

Nurses and healthcare providers know that putting your N95 mask on is only one step you need to know. Donning the N95 is a four step process and doffing the N95 mask requires that you consider a method that reduces the risk for transmission. Watch this video for a review of the donning and offing procedures for the N95 mask.

N95 masks are used in the healthcare setting when we are caring for patients who can transmit an illness via the air. We call these airborne particles and they can occur with influenza-like illnesses, and diseases processes such as tuberculosis
A fit test is required before wearing an N95 mask to ensure you have the correct size for your face. There are four steps to donning:
1. Check the mask for correct size and damage
2. Place the straps below the mask and cup mask in hand with nose piece at fingertips. Place mask on face, covering the mouth and nose
3. Seal the nose piece
4. Complete a seal check by blowing air out to feel for leaks
Doffing requires two steps:
1. Grab the lower strap and remove, upper strap and remove
2. Dispose
Hand hygiene is required pre and post mask donning and doffing.

    I'm not a nurse but I have one because of our poor air quality due to the smoke from our wildfires. How do you know if it's been fitted properly for you? This is my first time owning one

    so if your glasses fog up, your leaking?

  • @NurseMinder

    @NurseMinder

    2 жыл бұрын

    Typically with an N95 mask I do not experience fogging glasses - unless I am also wearing goggles - then the heat that rises from breathing is trapped and it will cause fogging

    No. If you have foggy glasses with an N95 you have a leak!!! N95 masks require fit testing
