    pumping around is called carving. you need somewhat looser trucks in order to carve, since you do not lift your front truck. it is very different than a kick turn.

    You can also pump from side to side to accelerate instead of pushing, this is a core skill for surfing. You can do it at a skate park but its easier with any kind of longboard, because of improved horizontal leverage and no wheelbite. This works better the faster you are going, but you can even pump up long gentle hills without pushing. Approach the hill with enough energy, at least 15 or 20 mph, and you can maintain that energy all the way up.

    Okay man firstly this video was super helpful and it's awesome BUT I'm doing it EXACTLY as is in this video on a half pipe (which I can drop in on and kickturn and that) but if I drop in and ride up one side I pump up and it is a bit faster than if I were to do it without pumping and then pump down and it's fast still but then I go up the other side pump the exact same and it still gives me kind of a boost and I keep pumping the exact same really hard but it just slows down and stops after like 2-3 pumps up each side and I wouldn't even be tired it just stops?!? I've been trying it for so long but everytime this happens will it just get better with even MORE practice or have you anymore tips? Thanks in advance man!

  • @NeverStopImprovingSB

    @NeverStopImprovingSB

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Conor Spierin Definitely man, that's what happens to everyone at first. It's a very particular motion that you have to drill into your muscle memory. Once you get it, you can really emphasize the motion and use it to go faster and faster rather than just trying to maintain your speed. I know it's really hard to see day to day progress but if you compare yourself to maybe a month ago, it should be easier to see the practice paying off. You'll get the hang of it soon man, I promise! One thing to check, though, is that your wheels and bearings aren't holding you back. If your wheels are deformed or really soft, they can slow you down. Also, make sure you can push and just cruise on flatground with very little friction for a good ways; if not, you might want to clean your bearings or get a new set. If you're not sure, try borrowing someone else's board for a minute and see if there's a difference.

    Great video. I've been told that on a mini ramp you need to push down as you go down.... you are essentially saying that you just need to get low, but I can see that when you come off the transition you do push down with your legs and your head kinda remains the same height. Can you explain the idea behind your technique here?

  • @NeverStopImprovingSB

    @NeverStopImprovingSB

    6 жыл бұрын

    Ian Donald It's all about the timing of when you are squatting down. By the time you get to the bottom of the ramp, your head is going to ultimately fall the height of the ramp, and if you were to keep your knees locked out the whole time, you'd gain a little bit of speed in the process. But if you make your head fall that distance at the exact right TIME, by squatting down into the curved part of the ramp AND pushing into it with your legs, you can maximize that speed boost you're going to get, since you're actively adding to your sideways momentum by pushing away from the ramp with your legs. Once you try it out for a little while in real life, it'll be so easy to feel it happening and your body will instinctively start to do it properly.

  • @iandonald1523

    @iandonald1523

    6 жыл бұрын

    Justin Lauria, thanks man. I know it's clearly one of those instinctive muscle memory things. Starting skating again after a seriously long break and it's harder than the first time! Plus only skating flatland before doesn't help.

    Oh man, that half pipe sounds pretty intense! But you're dropping in from the top and then you're coming to a stop after 3 pumps?! That is unreal! It sounds like it's not entirely your fault though, maybe your board has really 'frictiony' wheels/bearings or maybe the ramp is made out of something kinda rough and that's slowing you down. Is everyone else having the same sort of problems with it? If so, you can try to focus on tricks that you can do underneath the coping (early grab, fs 180, ollie to fakie, kickflip to fakie, etc...) If not, it's either your board or you just have to put in more practice time (fun practice though, don't think of it like 'work')

    OK, then you're exactly on track man! To be honest, it's extremely hard to pump at low speeds on a ramp with a long curve (like your 6 foot ramp almost certainly has), so to make it easier, you would need to start out with more speed somehow (i.e. push really hard when you're starting from the bottom),or if possible, work on it on a smaller ramp. Anyway, don't feel like you'll never get it, it'll come (especially once you are able to drop in from the top). In the mean time, just find other fun stuff to do and periodically come back to try the half pipe. One day, it'll just start working :)

    It's squatting down and PUSHING off the ground while you're going through the curvy part (the part that's curved upwards like a quarter pipe)

    So should you stand up at the end of the ramp of just stay crouched the whole time down the ramp?

    Hey! So, first off, I just want to let you know that I very recently did a second video on this topic, and I feel like it explains things much better: kzread.info/dash/bejne/anV-rbBsgbfMn6g.html But to give you a quick answer, before you get to the transition point a tthe bottom of the ramp where it changes from being slanted to being flat, you want to stand up, which adds to the forward momentum you're going to have once you start rolling on the flat part.

    @@NeverStopImprovingSB Thank you for the reply and the video, this helps a lot! I just saw others at the park going much faster and never really got why. Hopefully with this information I can do better next time I skate.

    Does the foot position matter when you pump on a ramp ?

    I think it definitely plays a big role, but I've noticed exact positioning can vary a little bit from skater to skater (mainly with the back foot). I can show you the positioning I use in this video, @ 0:55: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dpp6rNCNla_KiZc.html
