@@Tempeo It took me a slow 2 months too long due to kidney dialysis, limited work hours and detailed cleaning and painting. I think the average would probaly be within a week if you are able to work steady. Buy a Haynes manual and find Brian's video on pulling the Cherokee motor. A few hard to reach E screws top back of block to trans case. I bought the new engine from Rockauto.com. Comes with new oil pump. Need to transfer parts and all brackets to new engine. But it was worth all the time and effort. Connect with me if you attempt it. I'd be glad to give you additional pointers

Are the fly wheels the same... im changing motors. taking motor from 96 cherokee country putting it into a 98 sport. Connectors are different on CPS Will the 98 sensor work right with the 96 motor or should i use the 98 flywheel on the 96 motor to match the cps or what. Im will be using the 98 wiring harness etc. Also does the cps even have to come off the bellhousing when u pull just the motor. Can i just unplug it? Leave it there unplugged...Please i need help quick.

On my 2000, I was losing coolant, overheating, and had gravy in the oil pan. I pulled the head with both the intake and exhaust manifold, and the exhaust down tube all together. After discovering the head was cracked, which is common for this car (bad casting) decided to overhaul and buy a new head, and rebuild the motor (172k mi.). Your videos save me time and money! I would have been busting knuckle, cussing and losing my peace not knowing about the E12 wrench necessary to do the job. Thanks

@zxtenn Repair all the way. There weren't any available in the time frame for the repair to be made. The hole was behind the double catalytic converters and wasn't discovered till mid-repair process. It was beaten, sterilized, welded, and sealed over with permatex right stuff. The rest of the pan will be long gone before this repair begins to rust. It was much thicker after the welding/grinding portion of the repair than the rest of the pan. The repair time < drive to junk yard.

I leave the trans in. It's still in with the transfer case and drive lines etc. If you pull it all together you risk damage to everything and you'll have to evac and charge your AC because you'll have to remove the condenser. If you separate the motor then you can just go up with it and not bash the lines, body, and sensors etc.

People install the thermostat wrong in the front of the head and let it slip down and crush it. Others let their radiator get blocked full of mud and never clean it out. Others let their fan clutch go bad and never check the gauges or look into it. As for clicking, if you do regular oil changes (NOT 10K miles between filter changes) clicking is not an issue.

Smart people say don't drive with overheating engine. Brian, i know someone with a Jeep GC 6 with 180,000 miles and a piston is TOTALLY gone, hard to believe driver couldn't notice the power drop, when they heard the 'clinging' of the rod against the cylinder wall he thought maybe a lifter so he pulled the head and made a new discovery

  • @briansmobile1

@ThessFourEleven On the cylinder that broke the rocker arm I'd check the cylinder wall real good. It may have had a cylinder full of coolant or oil. Once it's apart you'll get an idea of what happened.

Tho I've pulled many engines, my 16 yr old son is about to help replace the 4.0 in our '95 Jeep Grand Cherokee that his older brother blew up a while back. I bought the truck new while in the military, and the only problem I ever hed a with it was starters every few years, and the oil pressure, and an overheating once. I gave it to my youngest son after purchasing a 4WD '97 Grand Cherokee to replace the '95. I believe you've added enough detail for him to understand the things I'm going to be asking him to do for this engine swap. Ours looks to have the same block & oil pan damage as the one you post here... Starting to wonder if that's the weak point in these engines? Thanks for taking the tme to post this video & info on the E12 wrench needed.

Working on a 90 Laredo to 87 Cherokee swap three of the four bolts at top of engine transmission that you had the special wrench for .. I cut them out with sawz all.. Once all other bell housing bolts where out. Managed to do so with only minor scratches to shield . Also cut bolts came out easily once apart. As they are only screwed in three quarters of an inch to begin with. Went back with slightly longer bolts and lock washer.. Anyone doing any work those two bolts are the most pain in the butt part of it. Everything else is pretty seem less.

I removed the grill and was hoping to pull the motor without pulling the trans. You recommend pulling the trans and then the motor. Can you explain the advantages and disadvantages to pulling the trans in more detail?

  • @boyettedesign

Quick question... why remove the transmission shift bracket? On the 2000 GC Laredo (my son's) the cable from the shifter to the transmission shift bracket is currently zip-tied to frame to hold it away from the bell housing during removal. We are about to chain it to the hoist, and just wanted to go through the video once more. I don't see that the transmission bracket is going to effect removing the engine, since the transmission torque converter is no longer bolted to the flywheel. Just wondering?? BTW... GREAT VIDEO... Tons of information there. PS... the front end (radiator, grill, and head lights, etc.) were removed.
