I just learned what the purpose of double sectoral pruning is on another channel. An alternative to tieing branches to the horizontal . @ The 2:09 in this video you show and explain double sectoral pruning as choosing the more horizontal outward facing branch and removing the more vertical branch at a "Y" junction. Greg Lang said that double sectoral pruning was developed in Hungary . Double sectoral pruning is a fancy name for me, a newbie, that commercial growers just knew from experience

Thank you for this video! I have inherited a cherry tree in my garden not sure how old it is. It has flowered and produced cherries this year, and still has leaves (we're in September). I've read cherries need to be pruned in late summer spring. Am I ok to prune now,in September? Thanks so much!

Welcome...so its a fungal...cylindrosporium or coryneum...you can see my two videos about it...needs fungicide early june after you pic the cherries and if you can pic from the ground all the leafs and burn it in the fall...

I got this young cherry tree I bought during the spring. It did not produced any flowers and cherries but it did grow a lot. It has almost doubled it's height. So now there are 2 giant twigs going upwards with massive leaves on them, compared to the rest of the tree. When do I need to prune it? I read somewhere before half of September. Is it ok to prune it while it still has leaves on it?

KawaGreen trees like yours have alot of energy in september and if you prune it it can grow new branches...they will be very small and you have to prune them again...so prune in early march and you will be ok...

As a microbiologist doing plant cell tissue culture where ZERO contamination allowed or total failure - I would recommend isopropyl spray bottle and pass blades over nearby vegetation to mechanically remove debris & spray again before pruning: much more effective & safer than wiping tools. Time is a factor so spray minutes before passing through grass/straw.

When is the best time to prune, please? We bought the house in winter and I wasn't 100% sure what types of plants were on the property so I left whatever I was unsure of alone. I have a very large cherry tree in my backyard, and it really hasn’t received much care over the years. As the years passed, I feel like they’re producing less and less fruit. Last year, they didn’t produce any fruit even, I think it was an off year. There are a lot of dead branches which I just started to remove. Do you have any thoughts on what to do? Is removing those dead branches a good idea?

This is the best idea..but its not so simple...paint the spot with a special fungicide paint and fertilize the tree..not to much..1 kilo its ok..any fertilizer...and then wait

Living in Ireland where the imate is quite cool. We have a young cherry blossom tree and the leaves look a little droopy/sad. Will they fall? Or have we done something wrong. We have moved it since into the ground.

I've heard different people talk about the role root stock plays in your pruning. What if you don't know what type of root stock you have?

Dana Cross root stock determines the amount of vigor tree will have...you will consider that and you will dicide how to prune...but the pruning method you see in this video its for all tupes of root stocks if you develop the tree like an open vase

Great video with clear instructions...thanks! I have inherited a cherry tree that does not look like a cherry tree because it's never been pruned. It's grown very tall and thin and has lots of branches growing vertically up from the base and the sides of the trunk. It must be ten meters tall. Can you tell me how I would prune is seeing as it has no sideways growth?

Sorry but now its to late...this method of pruning must be apply when trees are still small...your tree if you try prune it like i show will die...its better to just clean the dead branches and let it do its thing

we just had a snow storm split of a big piece of my grandfathers cherry tree , trying to find information on what I can do to try and fix it or maybe even turn it into another tree. Any suggestions?

It is not easy to answer but i will try...so if now its just split you and its small in size you can place it back and fix it in place with duktape...use a rope to hold the two parts together and with the tape cover the split parts...you must cover completely so no air can go in...if this is not possible you must cut out one part and leave the other to grow...

I'm about to plant 2 cherry trees. When should I do the first trunk cut off? Winter? Next early spring?

No...if you prune late june branches will grow fast...summer pruning must be at the start of fall...buds development take place after flowers falloff

Just wondering why the trees arn't pruned like a pine tree with one central stem. I have a stella like this and get over 30 kg of fruit most years .Am I doing it wrong? Thanks for this style of video,better than words.

Golden Turd thx golden..they are alot pruning types...in this video you can see the open vase type...this type of pruning i like and is better for the the type of rootstock i used...the type of pruning you did is for rootstocks with less vigour and if you like it then is the best...nothing wrong

You can but i think there is no reasson...we prune like that so we can get after a few years the loads of cherries we like and pic them as easy we can

Hi, I had no idea that fruit trees needed pruning. I just bought a lapins cherry and an almond tree. The cherry is one single long stem almost two meters tall. The almond is shorter and has branches all over the place. From your video I'm understanding that any branches pointing in, up or down should pruned? - I can do this with the almond. With this cherry tree (single long stick), what should I expect for the first year - should I prune it and how? I'm in South Australia and it's winter at the moment. Thanks

We have 20+ year old cherry i want to topwork. The problem is, the trunk has gotten so tall, it's about 12 feet tall to the lowest branch so I plan to cut it down to about 5ft and do bark graft on the remaining trunk. When should I do this major cut? Or would cutting that low kill it?

For this old tree best is to do it in the winder on a dry day...tree maybe will die..but if it not good now there's no point to have it

I have a sour cherry tree where all three main canopy limbs broke with the weight of a heavy wet show a couple of years ago and are hanging down. The branches are still bearing fruit and new branches and a lot of suckers have formed where the limbs broke. I want to prune the new branches until they are strong and then cut away the broken limbs. I am confused about which branches to cut and how to Identify the fruiting spurs. Do fruiting spurs form on new or old wood and if old wood how many years old?

Old cherry trees are sensitive to pruning...you can do that but the tree can get sick and die or never recover

@@SweetCherryGrower there's also a dark stripe of dead wood in the cambium layer, there's also like a brown bullet hole in the leaves in the summer and sometimes red ish liquid seeps from the joints in the tree. Would you be able to guess what they could be, thanks.

@@rhysgreen5115 so the brown bullet holes in the leaves is from fungus and its not big problem....but the dark stripe and most of all the liquid from the joints is a very big problem...maybe from fungus maybe from bacteria ....no matter..the tree is sick and will die soon...nothing you can do for old tree like that

I got a baby stella prunim avium cherry tree 170cm tall that im gonna plant 2 meters away from the bush, in between is a path way. Will the cherry tree block that path? The idea is to use the cherry tree to shade that path, but still be able to walk on the path. Any advice? Is it possible what im doing

Yeah no problem...tree trunk will be 50 cm wide in 40 years if its still there

I bought 3 different kinds of sweet cherry trees in November 2022 and they came in different heights. I planted them. I followed your 40” cut tonight and left 6 new buds below the cutting (4/9/23). Late to cut but we have been having winter storms and tornadoes. Forecast says no rainfall till Thursday. Did I do it right? When do I need to give them fertilizer ? 16-16-16? Thank you.

Yes!all year long!but for cherry pruning half of the people will said winter is the best time and half will said summer to winter....for me the only time you do not prune is after flowering until the end of summer....in the following months until you see flowers in the trees you can prune ....for me works better summer to winter so i do not prune with cold weather...i think the best time is when the weather its not rainy in your area start to mid fail

Why no speaking? It would be great to hear so much more. What pruners tend to do is, since they're heads are already full of so many layers of information, they don't know where to start explaining this stuff to new pruners. And KZread has become primarily for th General homeowner who finally has a chance to learn how to prune their trees because of this great thing called KZread!! And we can learn in the privacy of our own homes, at our own pace, without having to take expensive courses or read long confusing books. So we understand there's a lot of information in the experienced brain of the a pruner but please, we really need someone to finally take pruning and explain everything you are doing. For example; 1. What are fruiting Spurs and leaf Spurs, or what's the difference, how can we identify them so we don't cut them off? 2. What is the overall goal of pruning? We need to know how fruit trees grow so we know what we are going for. 3. What should we NOT do? New pruners are scared to ruin their trees. That's why we have left them alone for so many years. 4. Most people in these times can't afford to hire a professional and even if we could, we still want to learn for ourselves, so give us good complete videos, or even a series. 5. Take us through every step and if you can, please talk to us if you can. Thank you. If this could be accomplished and you call your video, "An Explanation of the Entire Process of Pruning a Cherry Tree" you'll have more followers than you can handle. And I'll be your first! @CheriByGrace Thx for your comment I will answer everything...the reason I am not speak is my bad English...I am Greek and I try to save viewers from a lot of pain... 1. it is simple...single buds are the leaf spurs...they produce leafs...3 or 4 spurs at the tip of the branch will produce new branches...but 3 or 4 spurs on the base of the branch will produce 2 or 3 flower and will die after summer past...the remaining single spurs on the branch will transform during summer to a spur with 4 or 6 buds...those are the fruiting spurs...this is standard for all sweet cherry varieties..and this is the reason you need to have 1 m (3f) long branches or more... 2. the goal is to give shape to the tree so you can work on it more easy...pic the cherries easy...control the crop so you can have better quality ...remove dead branches and encouraged new grow more or less... 3. they are no mistakes in pruning..just happy accidence...first you need to know what tree you like to have...I prune my trees in open vase shape....I have videos on my channel in what you have to do from the first year to shape the tree in open vase...from year 3 and on if you remove just the branches that go in the tree you have done 70% of the work...so do not let branches go in the trees..is the first step in this video... 4. I creating a playlist in my channel with everything I do in my cherry orchard...I have 1 year old plants up to 15 years trees...just subscribe... 5. its my first try in youtube,,,in the future maybe I can do better....the problem is youtube do not promote videos like this..youtube promote clickbait videos with zero content... ya00007, if you mean worms are inside the cherries, and you live anywhere around the Pacific Northwest, you may have an infestation of the "Western Cherry Fruit Fly." I had this in my Montmorency cherries and almost every fruit had a little "maggot" (fly larvae) inside. I finally got control of it by layering black plastic on the ground under the tree in the early fall. Since the larvae can survive winters by burrowing into the ground, this seemed to work. We had no worms at all last year, and a great crop of cherries. @@tedwhe ted believe me i have very authentic Greek accent and i will loose all my subs if i use it...but your solution for the fly is amazing...here we can not do it because in Greece many farmers have many very small orchards and even if i do it the farmer next to me will not ...but for big orchards that will really work

helo sir reguarding this i have a question which month is best 4 prooning and can i fertilize Cherry plant on this month or i will wait for 45 days because I have planted a geafted Cherry plant on my terrace garden in 10 inch plastic bucket just 20 days ago sir Im a begainer that's y im asking u to guide me

I don't understand what is meant by "inwardly branches". The video shows cutting a branch that is pointing basically up and out to the right a little bit. Actually it is a small branch that forks out and he cuts only one of them. See 2:46 in the video.

Yeah so if you look close you can see this small branch he cuts at 2:46 is facing a little bit inward and up...and this is not a big problem but at the top of tye tree is best to have 2 or 3 branchess facing out..so he cuts that extra nasty branch..in all his pruning videos shows what is inward branch in an open vase tree system..its simple
