How to Protect Yourself from Toxic Beliefs & Tech | Eckhart Tolle | SPIRITUALITY | Rubin Report

Dave Rubin of The Rubin Report talks to Eckhart Tolle, author, The Power of Now & A New Earth about why many people have become absorbed by toxic beliefs, why we need self awareness more than ever, what we can all learn from Ben Shapiro’s conversation with Russell Brand, and how social media addiction is filling our head with negative beliefs. First, Eckhart shares his observation that many people are living in a distorted reality filled with toxic ideologies. He is worried that a large part of the population is having difficulty thinking rationally. The loss of critical thinking is especially worrisome to him because he believes that it is this kind of negative thinking that has led to human disasters like the Cultural Revolution in Mao Zedong’s China. He likens the current cultural climate to being like a mental virus or as Carl Jung called it, a collective psychosis. If we do not develop more self awareness and self reflection and we continue to fear challenging assumptions we may end up on a path similar to Cambodia under Pol Pot. Next, Eckhart talks about the dangers of negative thoughts and negative narratives. He explains how you can develop more self awareness in your daily life. Eckhart shares why he thinks Ben Shapiro’s appearance on Russell Brand’s podcast Under the Skin is so important in this polarized time. He explains why it is so vital for a society to be able to hear differing viewpoints and how we can practice self awareness by having dialogues with people who think differently than us. He also discusses why it is so important to find your purpose and the benefits of seeking a higher calling. Finally, Eckhart discusses the modern day problem of excessive thinking. He explains how smartphones and social media contribute to overthinking. He stresses the importance of digital wellness and taking time to declutter your mind. He expresses support for digital detoxing to clear one’s mind of the toxic thoughts that we are absorbing through social media. Eckhart expresses his concerns about internet addiction and excessive screen time damaging kid’s ability to focus and instead giving them a short attention span.
Understanding spirituality is difficult in today’s fast paced world. Does the world of theology still offer something to a more secular modern world? Are there lessons to learn from a more spiritual path that can help us make sense of issues like morality? Or is spirituality best left to the past according to some modern day atheists and skeptics? What does it even mean to be spiritual in an enlightened world? Hear from a wide variety of guests on the benefits, struggles, and problems with religion with this playlist:

I've been thinking that since the beginning of last year. I think Prager has a valid point when mentioning the more secular we are getting the nuttier we seem to be getting too - like 'men should be able to use womens bathrooms, and 'men can have babies' sort of madness. I have recently found that some of the 'nuttiest' ones are the atheist/science types that pride themselves on logic, yet go ballistic if someone brings anything up about therapeutics for the virus, believes in God, or disagrees with them on politics.

Eckhart was also the primary instrument which allowed me to evolve into conscious sanity and out of the collective insanity. Yes. Eckhart is a Prophet for those few of us who are destined to understand the Message. But why so very very few humans are able to grasp the Message has taken me to another theory altogether. Humans must be npcs and we must be in a Simulation/Matrix. If this were not the case then collective human intelligence would evolve out of the insanity. Clearly the opposite is happening. We are not moving towards a New Earth.

With freedom comes responsibility. Responsibility us freedom's twin brother. The two always go together. True freedom is not doing whatever one's left foot desires at the moment. True freedom is accepting responsibility and obeying its demands. Let's say someone has a son of about 13-14. And this son is trouble, and brings trouble. True freedom is not leaving him and going away, or leaving it up to others (the other parent, school, grandparents, etc.) to deal with him, but working with him, trying to turn him on the right path.

I know that he has a voice in the world that is listened to and I would suggest he write a book about this collective psychosis that is spreading throughout this country and world. If we haven't come to beliefs on our own, after questioning where we stand, then we are just pawns and hypocrites.

Thinking that self respect and respect for others would open the mind to actually 'hearing' what is being said...going from that point to work on removal of the negative through 'humanness' and 'compassion' to change the negative self story or perceived negative story of another. At 68 I'm finally beginning to like myself, accept myself, and live a life no matter how little or how much I do within a day of purpose and meaning through just trying to be kind to myself and to others who pass my way.

Dear Dave, It has been a real joy to listen to your honest expressions of thoughts and feelings. You come across as genuine and I see you as a man of integrity. Even though I disagree with your lifestyle, I have the highest respect for you and know if I ever met you personally I could easily connect with you. There is nothing more powerful than truthfulness and genuineness and you have both. Keep doing what you are doing. We desperately need more voices of reason and wisdom. I like your guests too . May the God of the universe be with you and the Cross of Christ our ultimate redemption.

I was once sitting with my extended family in a beautiful hot tub, in the winter, in the Rocky Mountains. We were in a rented chalet and it was in the middle of winter, but there we were in a hot tub surrounded by beautiful snow covered mountains. My mother-in-law shrieked and started getting out of the tub 'to get her phone so she could take a picture of us.' She was so struck by the perfection of the moment that she simply HAD to ruin it by going to get her stupid camera in order to update social media. I think less and less, if at all, about 'when' people will return to normal, because I no longer really believe that we will.

Dr Peterson just needs to read A New Earth to discover the unifying theory of suffering and of the human condition. And I'm sure he will agree with most of it. But as a scholar and intellectual he might be turned off by the New Age stuff, so he might want to simply skip chapter one of the book. I believe these two men will find so much in common with each other, at least on the intellectual level.

I became aware of my thoughts after listening to Tolle for a year or so - he released a video and I remember him encouraging us to try and catch a thought. It took me a few days and I’ll never forget the 1st thought I heard - “are you okay?” And that would run through my head all day long but I had no idea really before I paid attention. Then once I caught that thought- it’s was a snowball effect and I kept catching more and more. Usually in the evening when things would quiet down but now I can watch them pretty much all day long. It’s a life changer. It may not happen immediately, it may take a few years - but it will change your life for the better- becoming aware of your thoughts. Sending ❤️

Fantastic interview. Times are indeed challenging with skewed ideologies and violent distrust toward people who are trying their best to help others during this pandemic. I as well was an atheist my whole life until this past year when I faced a chronic illness. My life was turned upside down and this began the exploration into ideas shared by Eckhart, Dolores Cannon and a number of others. It’s extremely addictive to listen to them and I hope one day, I will shed the ego and awaken. This interview was also an excellent reminder to put down my phone while in nature - not only does it interrupt the moment but it teaches my kids the wrong set of values. Thank you.

I thought I was crazy/stupid when I was in active addiction 19 years ago. Little did I know how incredibly wrong I was!! I'm Canadian, if you had told me then what we'd be experiencing now I would have thought you were insane!! Little did I know the true definition of insane! Thank God I remained aware! I actually found Eckhart shortly before I decided to walk away from everyone I knew and get clean, and here I am listening to him help me cope with this absolute insanity I'm watching all around me. I do not understand how these people are going wake up. In order to heal my past I had to process ALL the nasty things I did. It was really, really hard. I cried so much! It took 17 of the 19 years I've been in isolation and I'm still not completely done! I cannot imagine these people who are committing such atrocious crimes against humanity waking up and having to process what they've done! This has seriously concerned me since 2017! I was never fully asleep. I turned to drugs because no one I knew saw the truth as I did.

I do find great peace in knowing that God and Jesus will keep me safe and am not afraid of things. I am at peace the most while praying. Sometimes I get done praying and I just remain in the presence of the Lord by saying I live him over and over. I thank Him that he gave me the faith that brought me back to Him. I was raised in a protestant church and was always touched by what I learned. Now I just believe and have friends with a mutual belief. I pray all my friends come to know the Lord and feel his peace. Once they do, I'm sure they won't be able to be wishy washy about whether He is real. I shared this, hopefully all my family and friends will see it.

The book that helped me change my negative mindset and set me free is battle field of the mind by Joyce Meyer. She said when she would get a negative thought she would even sometimes shake her head to shake the thought out of her mind and replace it with a positive one. Not always shaking her head...only when the thought was pervasive...lol...Afterwhile the negative thoughts don't come as often. I don't have to accecpt these thoughts as my own esp since some thoughts can be from negative things said to us as a child or throughout our lives.. I did this and it definitely worked for me. Being mindful of the thoughts iam having and possibly why is helpful but replacing the thoughts with a positive one is what truly helped me.
