Think about it?…. People take cabbage from table scraps that have been sitting on the grocery store shelves, place them in water and it grows from weeks out of its normal growing habitat. We are putting it back in a cold environment, the wet paper towel is the water source and the crisper along with the perforated bag gives it fresh air circulation and a continuous water source from condensation. The cabbage is actually still living. We have given it a life line. I’m sure it can be done with most brassicas. 🤓

This is the first of dozens of videos I've watched that actually makes sense. Cudos to you! I guess you CAN teach an old dog new tricks. Not being contradictory but, we have 3 cabbages left to harvest. None of them will fit in the crisper drawer or a gal sized zip lock bag. Now what? "Think outside the box" maybe. Possible solutions. 1) harvest cabbage at smaller size. Maybe. 2) Harvest, clean, and wrap the root stem, then put in fridge. Within 1-2 weeks peel of outer leaves for some cabbage rolls, or cole slaw, whatever. Now it may fit and follow your process at that time. This would allow less waste and staggering harvesting, extending the use of your cabbage even further. One rule in business is, never flat out disagree with a new procedure/policy without being prepared to offer alternatives. I will say your garden is one of most aesthetically pleasing I've seen. For a "newbie" it's obvious you've put in the time. We're retired, and it's taken use 7 years to get it to where it's workable, and productive today. TYFS

lol…. My channel is called “Growing Out The Box” not just because I have raised beds. To your point. It’s also about having an open mind in doing things different. I have a family of 4 so succession planting 45 day cabbage is how I grow them for all the reasons you mentioned. I actually enjoyed your commentary. I watch lots of gardeners and I try to center my content not so much around the way they grow but around what I personally feel is missing. I’ve only had my channel for a few months and that approach I believe is contributing to the channel’s growth. Also, presentation. There are far more women gardeners than men so my intent is to be aesthetically inspiring as well as informative and if you look at any of my videos you’ll see that I reply to everyone with more than a thank you. Not sure how long I can do that as the channel grows but it is my intent. With that said, I hope you have found my content more useful than not and decided to not just subscribe but click the notification bell. I’m still growing and I’m sure I could learn a thing or 2 from you as well. Be blessed

As I get closer to having the footprint of the garden where I want it I really want to get into canning. But yes, I have 2 freezers full of the things I grow. I started growing because of Covid. I promised myself that I would never be in a position where I don't know where or how I would provide food for my family. It let me know just how unprepared I really was. To much is given much is required. A lot of people turn to me when things go wrong. I fix things! It may not be the orthodox way of doing it but I make things work. This garden turned out not only to be a fix for 2020.... For the first time I came to terms with needing to fix myself. That's why I call this channel, "Growing Out The Box". In building the people around me to believe in no limits I had created a ceiling for myself. Humility.... "To much is given, much is required".

Be blessed

You can use this same method to preserve ur parsley & cilantro. Moisten the paper towel, roll the parsley in it, then put in plastic bag, but leave bag open if there are no holes in the bag. Great video!

@growingoutthebox

It absolutely does! When storing the cabbage long term just don't cut into it. Once you cut into it - it will lose most it's vitamin C and reduce the shelf life.
Bet now I can buy more than one cabbage thanks bro

I wet my paper towels with Vodka and put on bottom for cabbage and lettuce, it works better and if I cut some off a batch I rub that area with a wet Vodka towel and put back in bag, keeps for quite a while!

Thank you. I had to figure out what to do with all the cabbage harvested at once. I suppose I didn’t learn because I have over 20 red acre cabbage growing and yet to plant the early cabbage. They mature at different times. The garden has expanded. Looking forward to the season.

No. Your Crisper is cool and should circulate air which helps keep the cabbage alive.
