How to Prep Your Tesla Before Installing PPF, Vinyl Wraps, or Ceramic Coating

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Before getting started on your install, it's essential to wash your car thoroughly to ensure you get a long lasting install with no debris underneath the film. It might be tedious and time consuming, but you'll appreciate the attention to detail later as you're installing.

----
First Wash:
Use our car shampoo provided and the 2-bucket method to wash your entire car. Use about 5 or 6 ounces or “bloops” in a 5-gallon bucket of water filled about 3/4 of the way. Make sure you have a second 5 gallon bucket of water for your rinse bucket.
What you need:
- Car shampoo (included)
- 2 5-gallon buckets
- Water hose/spray gun/foam cannon (preferably distilled water but not required) - tesbros.com/products/tesbros-...
-Grit guard (optional)
- Wash mitt (included)
----
Degrease Wash:
Clean out your buckets and grab the prep wash that comes in your kit. Mix 12 ounces in a 5 gallon bucket of water filled about 3/4 of the way. Use the 2-bucket method again to wash the FRONT of your car where you’ll be installing. Don’t forget the mirrors!
What you need:
-Prep wash (included)
-2 5-gallon buckets
-Water hose/spray gun/foam cannon (preferably distilled water but not required)
-Grit guard (optional)
-Wash mitt (included)
----
Dry:
Great work! You’re halfway there! This part may seem optional, but it’s actually very important to dry your car after a wash, especially if you’re using water that’s NOT distilled. Water that dries on its own will leave behind water spots, which is residue from the minerals in the water.
This module covers 3 different ways to dry your car:
1. Using a leaf blower
2. Using the yellow microfiber provided
3. Using a drying towel (tesbros.com/products/drying-t...)
-----
Clay Bar:
This section covers how to mix your clay bar solution and how to effectively use clay bar to smooth out the grainy roughness on your paint. This goes the extra mile to make sure all contaminants are off. Don't forget to rinse and dry the front of the car one more time before moving on! Reminder: Work in 2' x 2' areas to make sure you don't miss a thing.
What you need:
-Prep wash (included)
-Red bottle (included)
-Nitrile gloves (included)
-Distilled water
-Clay bar (included) tesbros.com/products/clay-bar
-----
Edge Prep:
Lastly, pull your car into your shop or garage, and follow along with me as you prep your edges. Without this step, dirt in edges surrounding the install areas can come loose and make its way underneath the film. Also, the hood actually wraps around the edges, so cleaning those up will ensure the film doesn’t pull back or loosen overtime.
What you need:
-70% Iso alcohol (included)
-Yellow microfiber (included)
-Lil chizler squeegee (included)

Excellent video and very helpful - looking forward to my cleaning project although will take me a lot longer I am sure!! I noticed in the video that both for the degrease wash and clay bar application, there is no mention of doing the doors - I would assume they should also be inculded - is there a reason for not applying to the doors for both second wash and clay bar?

Great question! This video was originally made as a part of our DIY PPF front kit course, so that’s why we only degreased and clay barred the front. So, yes you’ll need to degrease and clay bar whatever parts you are wrapping/coating

@@tesbros Thanks for clarifying - I am actually just going to do the ceramic coating using your great bundle. I assumed I would also need to cover the doors but wanted to confirm, as the title of the video says it’s also for ceramic application which had me questioning things. Thanks again!

Im about to do a PPF on the front bumper of my brand new Model Y. Do I still need to do the de grease wash as well if it is spanking new? Im yet to take it out - just been sitting in the garage for a couple of days, so not much of exposure except for the drive from the nearby factory to home.

Yes, even when it’s new, there are still contaminants so we recommend doing a degrease wash to ensure that it adheres properly.

I noticed you have a rockchip in your bumper, I do have one in the hood (kinda same size), is it better to ignore it and puttee ppf on on top?, I bought a Auto Paint Depot Touch Up Paint, but not sure if it will make it worst

  • @tesbros

It’s best to get all the paint imperfections out before applying PPF. That way it looks its best! If the chip doesn’t bother you, you can PPF on top of the chip, but you’ll just see it and it may cause a bubble. If you’re uncomfortable doing paint touch ups and corrections yourself (or you do it and you’re not satisfied with the result), you could have a detailing shop fix it before you put the PPF on. It’s all according to how you feel about your paint and if you want it to look better first.

Wouldnt the leaf blower kick up dirt particles up in the air and onto the car?

  • @tesbros

    @tesbros

If you just washed it, the area around the car should be wet, holding the dirt down. But more importantly, you want to dry top down, angling the blower towards the ground. If you’re in a very dirty or dusty area, then yeah I would probably hand dry

Planning on ceramic coating my M3, but I’ve got some nasty water spots that can only be seen at certain angles on the trunk and parts of the roof! Also have some light scratches from washing my car, shows up pretty clearly. Think that clay bar would take care of this? Or do I need to compound/polish with DA? Also, any good recommendations for 5-7yr ceramic coating?

  • @tesbros

    @tesbros

Clay bar might help with the water spots, but if they've etched into the clear coat, you'll need to polish. For the scratches - Sounds like they went through the clear coat so you'd need to polish that too. I think the best DIY ceramic coating is Gyeon Mohs Evo (we have a video about it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/naaMtsVuddbVZ9o.html). Gtechniq is also a great brand. Ceramic coatings are usually rated for 2-5 years though.

If I have ceramic coated my car, should I use the decontaminate or can I just wash and clay bar??

  • @tesbros

If you have ceramic coating, I wouldn't try to put vinyl or PPF on top. The hydrophobic properties don't allow for the two films to stick well on top of it. If you are wanting to wrap it, you'll need to polish the ceramic coating off first.

  • @tesbros

PPF won’t adhere to wax (or ceramic coatings) so wait till the wax wears off to do PPF. You can put wax/ceramic coating on top of PPF however
