How to Pray a Better Rosary

Ойын-сауық

Looking to dive deeper into The Rosary?
We all know The Rosary is an important part of our Catholic faith, and you may have even started praying it consistently, but do you know why you’re praying it? It’s not uncommon that we’re taught how to do things and not why to do things, and if we don’t understand the meaning and purpose behind our prayer, it won’t transform our hearts in the ways the Lord wants.
Today, Fr. Mark-Mary shares some tips on how we can pray The Rosary habitually and intentionally.
For a great companion to your deepening in The Rosary, check out Matt Fradd's Pocket Guide to the Rosary (tinyurl.com/yhgfz9f2).

hello I'm Italian, many times we do the rosary after mass, but it is done too quickly, without contemplating the mysteries. the true meaning of the rosary is lost, sometimes I do it at home slowly and lovingly and it gives me peace and serenity

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him." Matthew 6

As a personal trainer, I love the weightlifting analogy! I started to say the rosary about 3.5 years ago. I had recently suffered a miscarriage and in a moment of what I can only attribute to the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Mother, I just started to say it. I didn’t really know what I was doing - I was never really taught how to say it. I kept at it though and now years later, I can say that the rosary has changed my life. A true testimony of how Our Lady of Sorrows can turn any of our sufferings into joy. Thanks for the video, we need rosary champions today more than ever. Keep praying everyone - a rosary a day keeps the evil one away.

I started to pray the rosary out of curiosity. I grew up protestant and I wanted to learn to meditate (long story). Breath counting and so on only made me MAD! I hated it. I had a vague notion of what the “rosary beads” were, but, protestants actually have no idea about any Catholic ways. I looked up an mp3 recording of the rosary and when I heard the Apostles Creed I almost fell down. Each utterance was SO POWERFUL! This led to Saint Louis de Montfort’s “Secret of the Rosary”. The rosary has changed my life! I went to a chapel to pray the rosary with the Faithful, for more power. This led to the Holy Mass. I just can’t tell you guys what this means. Traditional Catholicism is TRUE! I’ve been looking for this ALL MY LIFE! FINALLY! FINALLY! Now Christianity makes sense! It’s the most mind boggling thing that there is! There’s no end to this! Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

This week, the image of her belt and her white robe. I feel as though, as I progress in continually praying the Rosary, I am slowly lifting my gaze to Our Lady, little by little, as I learn to love her more and deeper. It’s beautiful.

When I first started to pray the Rosary I thought it was just the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be prayers, and eventually I figured out how to truly meditate on the mysteries. I’ve been saying the Rosary on almost a daily basis (sometimes all 3 Rosaries, but usually 2) for almost 7 years and it’s a very gratifying experience.

Something else that I find fruitful, and life changing, is praying all 20 Mysteries of the Rosary in a day. Praying 4 Rosaries a day has really helped me grow in love for God overcome serious temptations. I highly recommend slowly working your way up to it. It’s difficult but extremely fruitful. I also recommend the Seven Sorrows Rosary as it is very beautiful and fruitful. A good devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows is very powerful, and terrifying to the Devil.

I highly recommend praying the "scriptural rosary." This is the old way it was prayed in the Middle ages years ago. Small biblical drawings would accompany the rosary which would keep you meditating on scripture as you went through the hail Marys. Those small drawings have been replaced by a little pieces of scripture placed between each hail Mary that reflect back on each mystery. It has done wonders for my Rosary. I found this small blue book at my local Catholic bookstore called "the scriptural rosary" and bought it on a whim.

Thank you Fr. I am in my 50's and have always struggled with having dedication to the Rosary. I go through spurts and have at times even spent a couple of years with daily rosary. But I have struggled. You have opened my eyes to see that it is because I have just been reciting it. I think I've always known this though, and I have purchased several books, and scriptural rosary guides and have used them in order to overcome my struggle, but I still have struggled and I could never truly understand how to overcome it. I now understand that I've never developed 'form'. This makes so much sense to me. Thank you for the permission to use 15 minutes a day, not being concerned as to whether or not I finish, but to focus on the form. I will use 20 for that has always seemed to be my timing. I know this will help, because of how it has spoken to my heart. Thank you again, for the permission.

Then, I believe I’ll be better prepared to pass, to my children, certain aspects of our faith, which I feel are a legacy nurtured within generations of my family across the world. This faith may move mountains, God willing, and heal a man. But it was my grandfather who taught me how to plant the seed from the huge pine cone my father gave to me. 😊💗 Thank you so very much. I could never say the Rosary throughout my life. I am 67. I would pray with our class in school, but when I was in Church at a daily Mass ( as an adult ) some people would stay afterwards to say the Rosary. They said it so fast, they might as well have been reciting the alphabet. So I didn’t bother with that. If I said it on my own, I couldn’t say the Hail Marys and meditate at the same time. It would be a 2 hour extravaganza! So I just gave up. I was very encouraged to read that St.Therese of Liseaux also had difficulty saying the Rosary. This upset her very much because she had a great devotion to Our Lady. Then KZread cane along and I started to say the Rosary along with the Kate and Mike Crusade. What a difference and what a joy! I think that if St. Therese had had access to such a resource, she would have been able to say the Rosary as well. And only 20 minutes.

The Divine Mercy book helped me pray the rosary. Sister Faustina's Diary explains the mysteries of the rosary in some of her comments in the book. However, I learned the rosary as a little girl and prayed it daily after meals along with my grand mother; and I also ask for the Grace to pray the rosary properly. Many of the You Tube videos are also helpful as they have commentaries about each fruit of the mystery and the images help as well to focus. Thank you for your reminder not to sacrifice form. You are right. God Bless You. Please pray for F. Parker and for F. Altman who are denounced by their Bishops for preaching the Truth of God's Word. These Bishops also need prayers. God Bless you. Thank you. Amen.

I live in an apartment building, it has a little nice private garden. During the terrible time at beginning of the pandemic I put up signs by the mail boxes so everybody could read both English and Spanish, to get together, just on Fridays at 3pm to pray the rosary. Nobody showed up. I went 2 or 3 Fridays, I prayed by myself walking around the little garden procession like but I stopped. Jesus said Where there is more than one...and it is true, for the rosary too. I go to first Saturday of month, past the 5 the Holy Mother asked in Fatima. After Mass a group stay and the rosary is prayed. Still... I pray, beg for devotion, I don't have it eludes me.

Something that I find extremely fruitful is mental prayer. Before praying a decade, I imagine the Mystery happening right in front of me. I talk with those who are in the scene and offer the Lord time to speak to me (obviously don’t limit Him to that time, let Him speak to you at all times). Then I do the Our Father and 10 Hail Mary’s. I struggle with that a lot, but the Saints say mental prayer is EXTREMELY important.

Indeed! The Rosary is a true joy to say when you begin by offering it to The Father, for the Souls in Purgatory who are so in need of the Rosary to be said. Offering the Rosary for family, friends, neighbours, colleagues, people who have gone astray, for people who do not believe in God, for the sick, for the unborn Children whose lives may be in danger. A little bit of abstainance, sacrifice and fasting while offering prayers to the Lord will be most pleasing to him and will nourish and bring fulfillment to the Soul. Mother Mary pray for us. Sweet Heart of Jesus we thee implore...oh make us love thee...more and more.

Best thing I’ve read: Mary is truly humble. She lived her life in service to our Lord. Even if you think you are praying TO her, she never keeps any praise or attention but always gives it to Christ. This is why we focus on the life of Jesus during the rosary-she is always leading us closer to her Son. She prays with us. I think it was Bishop Sheen who said when her prayers join with ours, how much more beautiful our prayers! If even the rosary is too much, just pray Hail Marys during the day. Thank you Father for such a lovely video.

Then I ask Mary to be the way to connect to Christ’s love, peace and joy that will remove all bad elements from me. Then I start the rosary. In this series I’m narrating events and miracles from the splendid life of Don Bosco. St John Bosco used to perform a miracle almost every day, through the intercession of Mary Help of Christians. From the lives of saints we can learn how to love God more and draw closer to him. Thank you.

HOW DID YOU KNOW! Also, You have an art in expressing an analogy. As a non-Catholic …Yelp, I overworked the muscles and jumped into praying the 54-day Rosary Novena (3rd time around) now I’m practicing the Hail Mary in Latin…HELP!!! However, my next goal is going back to the appropriate days of one daily with extended explanation of scriptures THANK YOU 🙏🏾 🙏🏾🙏🏾

While reciting the Hail Mary's, I would imagine the mystery each decade represents. I use the films I see on you tube or past movies for my closed eyes imagery. It helps.

I view Rosary like a medicine for the soul. I am taking Clandex for fatty liver. I did not stop eating fatty foods. But in spite of that, my fatty liver lessened because of the medicine. I think the same way about the Rosary. I am a sinful person but at least I’m trying to fight sin and depression. So my analogy is eventhough I am sinning, with Rosary, it helps me to lessen sin. I am in no ways perfect. Or have an ideal character like the saints who are pure in heart and soul. So in an ideal world, like in battling fatty liver, I will take medication and stop eating fatty foods. But since I am frail and weak. I still do the sin that I don’t want to. In spite of that, the Blessed Virgin Mary is helping me in fighting sin.

4 rosaries a day is the sweet spot. 20 decades is easier than you might think and suffices all the mysteries and bestows 4x the graces.

I first saying the rosary on Saturdays only. I forgot the other mysteries. And only said joyful. Sorrowful mysteries made me cry. I tried meditation on mysteries but spent way too long on it. It was faithful but eating my emotions. So then, luminous mysteries started. I started saying them with best friend. 3 years ago my mom remarried and moves. My son got bad concussion.. started praying every day without medication with bible. Now I can medicate saying the rosary read scriptures while saying rosary. I am saying pray just pray it makes everything better

Really great information! I generally would feel agitated when praying the rosary with others who were rushing through it and there was little emotion in the prayers, as if it was just another thing on the to-do list. My bad, my husband felt judged and criticized, I wish I’d never done that to him. At least he was praying a rosary with me. He stopped and it took a lot for me to forgive myself for judging and trying to “fix him.” Oddly enough, I went back to my Scriptural Rosary booklet I’ve had for ages and it has a scripture for each each Hail Mary specific to the mystery of the decade. What did I discover? Pure joy!! My mind stays focused and doesn’t have time to wander because I’m thinking about the scripture while praying the Hail Mary. What else did I discover? When I’m completely immersed in the present moment the rosary goes by so fast I’m like, “Wow, where did the time go?!!” Scriptural Rosary is fabulous and brought me deep meditation as if I’m right there when this all was happening over 2,000 years ago. Much love to you, Friar!! Thank you for this video! 🙏♥️

Great advice Father. So many thoughts... My suggestion to those starting out is to read The Secret of the Rosary by St. Louis De Montfort. Next, if you aren’t familiar with the scriptures that each Mystery is drawn from read read read. Having those images in your mind helps with distractions and refocusing. You can also break it up through out the day. A decade or two when you wake lunch bed etc. Pray with your entire family. Call upon your guardian Angel for help with distracting thoughts, we know they pray with us every time. Trust in the promises of Our Lady. If you are in a state of mortal sin get to confession and I find it helpful to pray the rosary in addition to whatever penance assigned. We know that sadly many do not believe in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Spend time in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament when you get the chance.

Thank for this video. I started the habit of the rosary once a day about four years ago. No one ever guided me through how to really pray the rosary and connect to God through each of the mysteries in the rosary. 😊

Best advice ever! Some people can’t sit still physically or mentally for a whole rosary. I had to start with a decade thought the day. Each decade only takes about 3 minutes. One decade 5x a day = a whole rosary. Also, I try to go to Mass (weekday or Sunday) 15 minutes early to pray the rosary. Also, a one-decade rosary (Tenner) can make praying the rosary seem easier.

The more you pray the Rosary, the more you'll want to take your time...30 mins is a good pace. Light a candle; assemble a small home altar...to start, dollar stores have great buys on crosses & small pictures of Our Lady and/or the Holy Family, and flowers. Nothing fancy is necessary, just a focal point.

I needed this. My friend well intended got me into praying the full rosary and there's some days it's overwhelming and I fight the devil in not needing it. I like that I can break it down to reflect on each step. I pray it fully each day, but saying it, not feeling it. a huge difference I can feel. Thank you for permission to relearn to do it properly.
