How to play other region Blu-rays (EP 102) Why does my player not play? Region hack that MIGHT work!

I figured out how to play a Blu-ray from the UK that I accidentally purchased. I am not suggesting you go out and buy a different region Blu-ray and try this. There is no guarantee this will even work on other Blu-Ray players. The purpose of video is to show if by accident you end up with one, it may be possible to play it if your player has the top menu button.
I am using a Panasonic DMP-BD89 in this video. But I believe any Blu ray player with the "TOP MENU" button should work. Just stop the disc, & then hit the "TOP MENU" button a few times.

Remote must say these exact words: "TOP MENU". Not: Pop up menu. DOESNOT WORK ON Sony PS3 or PS4
NO GUARANTEE but Viewers confirm trick works on:
Panasonic DMP-BD84
Panasonic DMP-BD89 (some say it is hit & miss depending on the disc & region)
Panasonic DPUB150 4K Region A
Panasonic DP-UB150EB-K
Panasonic DP-UB420
Panasonic UB820 (Some discs caused issues)
Panasonic DP-UB820 UHD
Panasonic DP UB820 4K Blue ray player in Australia
PANASONIC DMPBDT180EG in Norway
Panasonic DMP BTT110
Panasonic SA-BTT196 if you mash buttons like crazy!
Sony BDP-S6700
Sony BDP-S1700 (had 1 issue with a disc)
X box One with Xbox remote
Some viewers who have bought a so called region free Blu-Ray claim some Blu-Rays still don't play on:
Panasonic DMP-BD81 (Thanks to John for info)
Panasonic BDT167 (Not a region free player)
Panasonic DP-UB159 4k player (Not a region free player)
Sony S3700 Sony UBP-X1100ES
Region free Bu-Ray machines that viewers say play everything (I don't guarantee this though)

Just to let you know, I tried this on my US player (Panny DMP BD85) with the lovely boxed release from Second Sight of the awesome film 'SESSION 9' It is supposed to be 'B' locked. And YES! It worked just fine. It is an older model, 2010 I think, and after it read the disc I did not get any warnings or anything, it just sat there. So, I pressed 'Stop' once, and then pressed 'Top Menu' once, and BAM! the disc menu showed and played perfectly 😁 Thank you *SO* much because I do NOT buy more expensive films or sets very often at all, but this was a really special case because I really love the movie and it is such a beautiful set! (Man, if I had a nickel for everytime I've used that line 🙄) So, a HUGE *'THANK YOU'* for this, it was so bloody simple! This model is super close to yours so I was really hoping that it would work.

Works only if your player activate java controls at boot up and let you use the remote controller buttons (including the stop button) while loading the disc. Some panasonic players do it as well as some pioneer ones. But some others like sony players and many LGs won't let you use any buttons until the disc has finished loading properly and passed the region check. If you try pressing the stop button or top menu button on those players, all you get is a message stating "this function is not allowed with this disc at the moment" or something similar :=(( Note : Even with the proper players allowing you to use that trick some discs can still be authored to lock access to the remote buttons straight at bootup, hence preventing you to unlock them using that method. For example, i got a bunch of early MGM REGION A blurays of old james bond movies like Dr No, Goldfinger or from russia with love that can't be played on my REGION B Panny DMP-BD89 no matter what i do. As soon as they start loading, the remote controller is unusable :=((

I found a simple way to bypass blu-ray region code on my Panasonic DMR-UBC90EG (4K recorder, native blu-ray region B, bought may 2020). Perhaps it also works with other Panasonic recorders/players. 1) Load the disc 2) Wait a few seconds for the "Invalid Region" screen to disappear 3) Press any 3 numbers on your remote That's it. I live in Norway, which is region B. I've seen this suggested before, but I've never been able to use this to play my region A discs, of which I had many. I had an Oppo 103D, which I'd gotten hacked to be region switchable, but it broke down shortly before I got my new 4K OLED TV, and I wasn't able to find a 4K player with the same ability. Fortunately, the Panasonic DP-UB820 player could easily be made region free for DVD, but not Blu-ray.

I had the region A copy of Metropolis by Kino which wouldn't play on my region B UB9000 (latest firmware, should be similar for UB820). The top menu trick only got me to the menu page but the arrow keys and play/pause etc did not allow me to play the film. So going back to the error message I tried stop 1 OK and that made the film play, stop 2 OK made the extras play, pause/play worked as well. No need to press Top Menu. I don't have any other region A blu-rays so it was good enough for me

Hello Unclemarks, so I understand from the comments I have to avoid updating to newer firmware? My receiver is connected to eArc on the television and the receiver is connected with ethernet. I ordered last night the Pana DP-UB820. So I have to connect the UB820 directly to the television to avoid the update for the firmware or? And if I can connect to the receiver, is the best connection Audio HDMI to the receiver and Video/Audio HDMI to the television? Or do I only use 1 HDMI cable? Thanks for the help and thank you for the video! Can’t wait to play my blu-ray’s and dvd’s from The States. I’m from Belgium btw. Greetings and all the best for 2023 and upcoming years!

Hi! Im not sure what you say in the video, what are we not gonna do? Hit stop once. Then start pressing "top menu". By the 4th press, my video started playing. It has nothing to do with the internet. It is probably better you are not connected to the web. Your remote has the "top menu" button? The couple of machines I have tried this on seem to stay on and playable, with all functions until you exit or eject the disc. Not really sure this function is something the governments and tax departments want working anyways! It is a money grab doing the regions.
