Yeah, I'm still in shock really, he was the reason I picked up a bass, trying to learn his bass lines, so melodic, funky at times. His bass lines will live on forever.

I met Andy via a mutual friend, about 3 years ago. He had come upstate with his girlfriend. They were enamored by what was available for such little money (at the time) in the Hudson Valley. Later, Rourke and I would split hairs about music and he would go on to tell me about his new musical project with singer, Dolores O'Riordan (The Cranberries). Then She passed. Mr. Rourke did manage to play some of the music he and Ms. O'Riordan were working on....I wish I had a recorder on me. It was pretty amazing. I am generally "anti-your hero's" but Andy was a very approachable human....super humble....I had confessed my youthful love for him, and he assured me that he and the rest of the Smiths were "mere mortals". I am with the rest of the "Smiths World" in that I am feeling this loss....or trying to process this loss.

R.I.P. Andy. Bless you ❤

Listen to Johnny Marr's isolated guitar tracks, especially from the early albums. They're brilliant but they sound hollow and it's immediately obvious how important Andy Rourke's bass playing was to the songs. It's a shame that he's not as revered as Marr has become over the years because his bass parts were so good and critical to The Smiths' sound.

They are not hollow. They are specifically designed to not get in the way of the bass. Marr knew exactly what he was doing.

@@sunepedersen8537 Nah Joyce, Marr, and Rourke would all jam out the songs together then record them on to cassette to give to Morrissey to sing over. There's even videos of Rourke recording the bass parts himself in the studio.

Yeah I feel very bad for their rhythm section. The drums and bass are amazing, but Marr and he who shall not be named are just endless fountains of talent.

Andy Rourke's bass playing is essential to the smiths sound. If you catch the Smiths performance on the tube, he's like a machine

I'm so happy you covered Andy Rourke here. Whenever I want to practice my pick playing, I queue up a Smiths song. I love how his bass lines bounce around so much, and the frequent octaves are good string skipping practice. The Smiths wrote some of the best songs of the 80s. Rourke was a huge reason why these songs remain so emotionally resonant even today.

Another one of my favourite bass players. The Smiths’ producer said Andy should have received royalties.

Extra tip is to get a chorus pedal. Rourke has one on for a majority of the mid to late part of the smith’s timeline. (Hatful of hollow onward) It helps to thicken out the bass sound in a mix with less guitar emphasis.

Loved it.....his style of playing is so unique....his genius is how he thinks about what to play....he makes the instrument sound entertaining to the listener.....the perfect accompaniment to the guitar legend that was to become johnny marr......Andy is often overlooked in the shadow of Morrissey and marr but to those that know he is a true maverick........thank you so much for all your hard work in putting this channel together.....jj burnel of the stranglers or Bruce foxton of the jam would be great.

He wasn't hogging the spotlight. He just got the job done and did it very very well. And Barbarism Begins At Home alone proves it. I'm surprised in a good way how many people miss him and all the press coverage.

Andy is one of the great innovators on rock bass, though he’s maybe not recognized as such. When I run out of ideas on bass, I put on a smiths track, and am reminded music is boundless.

Bruce Foxton and Andy Rourke are two most underrated bass players of all time. Don't hear them mentioned with the likes of Flea, John Paul Jones, John Entwistle, Sting, Paul McCartney and the like. May not have been in as big of a band as these lot but easily wrote some of the best basslines ever. In The City, Town Called Malice, Down In The Tube Station At Midnight, A Bomb In Wardour Street for Bruce and for Andy the likes of Heaven Knows I'm Miserable, This Charming Man, This Night Has Open My Eyes, Headmaster Ritual, I Know It's Over. Like those lines could rival anything those other GOAT bass players wrote.

I'd love it if you did a video on Dennis Dunaway of the original Alice Cooper band, one of the most underrated hard rock bassists ever.

You should do Trevor Bolder, bassist for David Bowie in his classic period. His basslines hit that sweet spot where they are melodic, chromatic and hit the chord tones in the right places

Great video as always Paul! It's great you cover some of the less recognized bassists. E.g. Geddy Lee's playing has been analyzed by legions of youtubers (and rightfully so) but there are so many others who deserve recognition. I'd absolutely love to see a video about John Wetton - especially his work with work with King Crimson was phenomenal (and his distorted P-Bass tone was heavy as fuck)! Also, JJ Burnel from The Stranglers would be a really cool subject. Thanks and rock on!

Great Video..i never thought Andy got his due. His bass lines are amazing. I kind of equate them to Tony Levin's bass lines for Peter Gabriel's "So". Nothing complicated or flashy..but the bass is there where and when it needs to be. It's brilliant!

I might be wrong but the way I have it the reason for F# tuning is that the strings react differently under more tension having more snap, which Marr prefferd aswell as forcing him to not rely on blues bends because of the higher tension.Great video as always!

love his tone and playing, as for his tone i would use a precision type bass with the mids scooped and the the bass and treble boosted. He had the perfect punk rock tone

Rourke was the ideal culmination of post punk and pop bass style. So melodic and complimentary to Marr's guitar playing, making the three piece sounds a lot bigger than they were.

This is speculation on my part, but Johnny Marr was a Fender Jaguar player (for the most part). Those are short-scale guitars (24" instead of a Gibson 24.75" or Fender Strat/Tele/Jazzmaster 25.5"). As such, if you don't want the strings to be too loose and flubby, the Jag really benefits from either fitting heavier-gauge strings (for standard tuning) or, as Marr often did, tune up a semitone or two. I used to tune my Jag to F, then I had it with heavier strings for a while. The short scale length and stringing with 10-46 strings just didn't work for me.
