Form of the Song
"A Day in the Life" is the last song on The
Beatles record release, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The rock quartet released the album in 1967. The song was composed by both John Lennon and Paul McCartney, as they take turns lyrically through the different sections of the song.
There are a lot of rumors that have stemmed from this song, in particular, the death of McCartney. The book "Turn Me On, Dead Man" refers to the idea that the Beatles began a hoax about the death of McCartney, stirring up debates from hints dropped throughout the song.
The song itself has three sections. The second section changes timing and features McCartney on piano, leading into Lennon's psychedelic dream. Follow along to learn the different sections of the song and its progression.
"A Day in the Life" uses the following song form:
* Intro
* Section A
* Section B (McCartney solo on piano, 2/4 timing)
* Section C (Lennon goes into a dream)
* Section A

"Like a B7 but more painful" is the best description of B9 I've ever heard. 😊
Brilliant! Opens up the song like I never heard before. The play between Lennon and McCartney is incredible.
Thank you! This is the song I and my university classmates sang heartfully during those four years dating back to 1990s.
Thank you thank you thank you I so needed to be able to hear this from my own guitar and you guided me. You have given me such a treasure thank you. It is because of your generosity that voice of John Lennon shall forever live on, once again, thank you.
Thanks a lot !one of my favorites.very nice and easy breakdown even for beginners. Have a nice day in the life. Greetings from Greece.

best guitar instructor i've seen on this channel so far
Thank you for the lesson, well taught.
thank you so much, keep the awsome work
Madam................thank you. I've been trying to find a lesson for this, my favorite song, for over a year. No one had one. A few of people more than happy to prove they could play it themselves, but none that where interested in teaching it. I should have been able to learn it w/o a video, but now I don't need to. Thank You again.
Great lesson thanks. I was looking for a lesson showing the C/B and asus2 chords and you had it.
Transcribing the song suggests that John stummed this 1+2+3+4 with quieter strums on the down beats and emphasis placed on the upstrokes, while Paul played the piano on the down beats.
Nicely done. Thanks.
Really like the way I don't mess around. Thank you!
Great tutorial, thanks a lot!
KZread just fed me a video of Neil Young playing this so I came to you for some help. This is a great guide thanks!
P.S. I got the John Lennon "Peace" J160E Gibson to play these tunes on. Plus the "Inspired by 64' " Epiphone Texen. Thanks again.
Very good explained, Julie
I love your voice it's gorgeous
Cool lesson 👍
Very good and easily done
Saw Neil Young play Paul's part further down the neck (E and B9 play at seventh fret)with a dsus2 at the second fret instead of the D and E, D, C ,D as barre chords for the part when it transitions back to the verse after the dream bit. Sounds good on the electric.
Really big help. Thanks!
Nice! Thanx. I like the added "D" on the Second String in the G Chord.

Leesa Michaels that's a very common way to play G major. Kinda depends on what voicing you're looking for
Nice lesson!
Great job, thanks!

It's really cool that you're teaching a minimal way to play a very complicated song. Tell me, did you pick up all the changes and orchestral parts by ear???? Fantastic!
very well done but would like to see her play it all the way thru once

Thank you very much, you're very talented, friendly and cute. You explain very well, easily. Now I'm going to practice. Until next time. Muchas gracias, eres muy talentosa, amable y linda. Explicas muy bien y de manera sencilla. Ahora mismo voy a practicar. Hasta la próxima.
Great instruction Julie, just a bit on the fast side for a slow poke like me, but I'll get it. Again, thank you.
I like it.
That was great, could you play the whole thing through at the end.
This song was multi tracked. So you can actually play it with less chords. In the intro .
Julie, you'r easy on the eye and you play like a genius :P
You some what remind me of Meg white, great vid
JST LEARNED SOME CHORDS I DIDNT KNOW B4...BUT THEEND I USE E MINOR THEN HAMMER 2ND STRING JUST LIKE YOU DID DOING THE E m CHORD....:-) AND IT ENDS WITH E MAJOR.

Good Job
Nice video! Fact: this is also the first song Nile Rogers (a.k.a. 'The Hitmaker') learned how to play as a kid!
Nice job. The 'C' on 'I saw the photograph' is obviously intentional and I can finally understand why that line stood out. Lennon is underlining it. The octave E,D,C,D,G sounds much more powerful if on the 5th & 3rd string octave starting at the 7th fret. Very good 3 videos that covers a lot of ground. Nice fingernails too!
I would love to be able to play this
Thanks. But I would love hear you play the full song.
Thanks for Colombia
Thanks
Nice Martin
I can’t find the 2nd part of this video, the part that covers the orchestral transition parts. Will you please provide a link?
muy linda la profesora
Nice lesson! Small nit pick, though. A9 implies a dominant chord. Which isn't what you're playing. I would just call it an Asus2 chord like you said as well.
❤️
Ah, a Martin! Great choice.
I could watch her play 24/7
wowo thank you
great tutorial!! Thank you oh so much :) But I agree with the guy before me.... Lennon doesnt forget
When you look online for chords, there are often many different versions, and MANY mistakes ! I'd like to have your opinions on some of them... Ok, first, about the begining, you say it's G-Bm-Em... and I think it's right ! But since the bassline is something like G-F#-E , a lot of people just play G-D/F#-Em , playing the F# with the thumb. So, does it makes some sense to you ? We've got the note F# both in chords Bm and D, so...!!? And when it comes to the ''turn you on'' part, I've always been alternating between Em and C , and this one really sounds good ! Anyways, thank you for this great video, it helped me a lot and I subscribed ! So if you have a minute, I'd really ike to know what you think ! :)
wow, must be rich - nice Martin!!
I love u....
what martin guitar is that? I like the sound of it, and i think it looks nice that there is no edging around the sides, it just looks like natural wood crafted together. If anyone can help me out that would be great.
@bluegrassbarry

the edging around the sides is called "binding". it is there to protect the thing against dings so it does not get wrecked, but more importantly to stop the wood from checking or cracking. if there is no binding, moisture can enter and exit the wood making it swell and contract and crack. martin is famous now for cheaping out and not putting binding on the backs. but I think even they always put it on the top. on this ugly martin guitar, it's just maple color binding which matches the spruce top. in fact, I think this is a ply-wood top with a spruce vaneer on the top ply. you want binding. it helps the guitar stay together.

+bluegrassbarry ok, thanks
in the middle section its Dsus2 not Dmajor plus when you play the B9 you should be fretting the D# ( 1st fret 4th string )with your 1st finger

dave dore Exactly what I noticed, she's playing a B6sus2 not a B9.
It's a pleasure to listen you. I love to play this song and many other from the Beatles. You look like very pretty I'm in charm. Je vous aime !
Man she is absolutely gorgeous! Great lesson too. Thank you.
Excellent lesson. I'm totally covering that. I thought Martin's were only for finger-picking, but you make that thing sing with a pick. You have actually debunked a common opinion.
did the piano chord go to C as well?

:O She's wearing a different jumper! It's still rank though, good tutorial though x
Great lesson. She's Pretty!😁👍
eres muy hermosa y me encanta tu voz!! casate conmigo!!
kool
Not to be nit-picking but the B9 chord you are doing is actually a B6sus2. The B9 is with your index finger on first fret on the D string and yours is on the first fret of the G string.
