Listening to your sweet tones reminds me of my acoustic guitar tutor, when I was just 18. You haven't been playing for 45 years. If you count the actual hours you dedicated to the guitar I bet it wouldn't even amount to two full months. Why would I know that, bc I used to be like you. If you practised three hours a day, you wouldn't have written that sentence. Don't lie to yourself. It doesn't make you a better guitar player.

@@zensheltered Pretty harsh words there Jai, however I feel they are very accurate. I picked up and started playing the guitar back in 1974. A guitarists current skill level is directly proportional to the time invested practicing. On top of that some aspects of playing are indeed a perishable skill. Your statement "Don't lie to yourself. It doesn't make you a better guitar player." is (IMO) true. Some people play as a hobby while others give their playing much, much more priority in their lives. I don't think that this song is composed by Paul Davids, so it would be wrong if he made any money from this. Its not his property. Imagine that you wrote or own the rights to a hit song, would you allow people you don't know to make money from your work? On the other hand, of course its very nice of Paul to give us a free lesson on this song. But he is only doing this because he wants to make money, lets not kid ourselves here.

I won't lie, I used to play the guitar like a fanatic when I was younger, throughout school and early on in college but as I got older and other things took priority and precedence , I suddenly find myself with no time to spare for the passion of guitar playing. I'm not great at it, barely decent at best, but your videos, Paul, they make me pick up the guitar and spends my free hours on jamming out my favorite tunes. Your videos are full of charisma and inspiration, so much so that they always manage to get me to reach for my old lady and make her sing. I'm gonna spend more time on my this old passion of mine, and I just wanted to let you know that you gave me the 'push' to do it. Thank you so much.

I lived on the Heemraadsingel in Rotterdam and I remember one guy on his pushbike with a long trailer attached to it, carrying the largest stand double bass nearly every day heading up to the Music Academy on the Pieter De Hoogweg. It was a funny sight as the Bass and Trailer were twice the size of the pushbike. The Collings guitar you are playing Paul has to be one of the sweetest guitars I have heard and the garden you are in is not to bad either. How I miss the Netherlands.

He makes it sound a lot more complex than what it actually is. Paul McCartney would just listen to records and his ear would tell him what the chords were. People that are not truly interested in guitar need lessons Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, etc. never took a lesson. Does anybody need to teach you how to masturbate? Stop worshiping and play the damn guitar.

George Harrison used many of the same techniques as early as Rubber Soul's "If I Needed Someone" another song with syncopated strumming around D shapes with a capoed guitar at the seventh fret. (He was probably influenced by The Byrds' "Bells of Rhymey" out earlier that year or maybe "Norwegian Wood.") George Harrison also went to the well again with his demo of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" capoed at the fifth fret. A lot of melodies can be created noodling with D shapes.

Fantastic information! Great presentation! I’ve listened to that song, and many others, for years but trying to play it “correctly “ or “like George did” is not as simple as knowing the chords or melody patterns. I have worn out cassette tapes and scratched up my albums (yes I’m old) trying to get songs down right either for playing in a band or just expanding my ability and repertoire. I like the way you explain the feeling or dynamics in the song and show exactly what or how the chord progressions make you feel as you create tension and then resolve it. Just beautiful. Thank you!

Agreed! Some people might think that Paul is nitpicking for being 'too concerned on sounding accurate'. There is a reason why the song was recorded as it is, with the guitar parts played like how they were - neglecting them is simply ignoring what makes the song a classic in the first place. Applying such kind of mindset when learning songs will only make you a way better musician.

After about 6 months of lessons when I was around 12, I would sit there glassy eyed, mouth slightly open, drooling while my teacher tried ti explain chord structure etc to me. My brain just couldn't connect to what he was saying. I had already played for 4 years, (not that great but not bad) and thought some lessons would help. I quit. Some people can do something but not comprehend why they can do it. I can play chords, solo, write songs but when it comes to to things like what Paul talks about, I'm lost.
