Hi new subscriber ! Great video. I just love peonies & this is the first year i will plant them. I'm in Canada too & want to know where you purchased your peonies from ? I haven't seen any at the local garden centre here in Quebec. Thanks

Hi welcome to the channel I get my peonies from Walmart and from Dutch Growers. Last year Dutch Growers a local greenhouse put all their perennials on sale in October for $1 so I got some then. The others were from Walmart I see them at Walmart every year. They have some there now here in Saskatchewan. The other place I seen them this year was Home Depot. I hope you can find some. You can slo order online from Veseys. I use them a lot and they’re pretty good. They have some of the rare colours and some common.

Hi i purchased some from Walmart about 3 months ago , and mine didn't look anything like the ones you have , mine looked more like string beans on steroids and they didn't have any shoots on them so it was hard to figure out how to put them in a container! And also the package said to soak them in water for a few minutes before planting. I live in sw Florida I have them in a sunny spot but they haven't started growing yet ?

How long have you had them planted? Maybe check the depth make sure their not to deep and that they aren’t rotting. Sometimes I will dig plants up to see what is going on and if I see life I replant not quite as deep. The other day I dug up a dahlia tuber that did not come up and found it was being attacked by ants the rest came up so you never know what is going on under the soil. Let me know what you find out.Hopefully there are shoots on it.

I didn't notice or hear about if you had drain holes in your pots.

Yes good catch I always add extra drain holes to pots I find they just dont’t have enough when or dont’t have any when you purchase them. I will try to remember to comment on that in the rest of videos. Thank you so much for watching them and keep the comments coming makes for better videos!

I live in Alberta and our ground is frozen right now. I ordered a peony root and was hoping it would have arrived before now but I just received it from Breck's and wondered if its better to plant it up as you have done in this video or put it in the fridge and then put it in the ground in the spring.

I would plant it up then put it in the fridge to give it the cold period it needs to bloom. Make sure you check on it monthly and make sure its not drying up. I forgot about one that I did this with that also arrived super late from Brecks. I managed to catch my mistake and gave it some water and planted it out in the garden in the Spring. I have decided to only order in the Spring from Brecks now after that. I also received a daylily to late as well.

It's so cold in alberta you can just put it straight in the ground. The only bummer about planting tubers is they won't flower for 3 or more years. If I were you I'd buy the plant from the store that is already ready to bloom.

I am doing a mix this year. The Dahlia seedlings are pretty spindly so I will continue to nurture them and plant the large tubers out that I just picked up. I usually do a few dahlias in pots and rely heavily on annual seeds and bedding plants. The dahlias were a good experiment to see how they do in one season. It would be nice to get some tubers off them by end of season if not then I will treat them as annuals. We will see if they flower.

shouldnt they be planted 24 inches apart?

Hi Andrea it’s just a temporary holding spot till they can go in the garden you could plant them in a larger pot to give them more space. I didn’t put them under a grow light. I was trying to prevent them from rotting in the bag. If you were growing them in containers outside definitely give them more space. I find they ship the plants a bit too early to the stores and if you buy them don’t check them they are either dried out or rotted. I probably won’t buy any in bags anymore due to this. I only have so much room for plants in my house lol.

Thank you! I just bought one root from Walmart yesterday. I live in Alabama, and I'm confused as to when I should plant. I want to grow it in a pot. Should I wait for Spring, or plant them now?

@@andreacooke3210 check the condition of it in the bag if there are shoots on it pot it up otherwise it will die. If there aren’t any shoots just keep an eye on it till you are ready to plant it or shoots appear. I tend to try and hold off if possible but then you have to really monitor it. Depending on your gardening style sometimes it’s just easier to plant it up and be done with worrying whether it will rot. I really don’t like it when I can’t see the condition of the root in the packages in the store cause you don’t know what you have till you open it at home. You use to be able to see the roots I have noticed many of the bags are now green plastic so you cannot see. So I open the bags right away at home. I have gotten burnt by Costco a few times and got rotted roots or tubers.

@@creatingmygarden Hello I’m in Alabama also. I bought 3 from Lowe’s and all had shoots except one and it was in a bag by itself, I’m wondering if they will let me return it. I’ll try..I’ve only had them one day. Thanks for the video.
