How to Perform the Epley Maneuver for Vertigo

Ғылым және технология

If you're living with vertigo, particularly Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), you can actually treat it at home with no doctors, no expensive equipment, and no medication. The Epley Maneuver jostles the crystals in your inner ear causing the sensation of vertigo and helps them settle back into the proper position.
For more information on vertigo, dizziness, and some tests that may help you determine what may be the underlying cause of your symptoms, check out our full article series on Caregiver University: www.rehabmart.com/caregiver-u...

When the doctor did that. To me ,I thought I was flying around the room . It was scary and horrible. At home I do it sitting and move my head down to the side until I feel steady. There is. Nothing as Awful as vertigo. It is the only medical condition that limits any and all activities. I used to get it Often and would cause panic. I don’t have it often, but when I do., I panic knowing I might have To cancel my plans but the neck movement does help. Also, you must limit your salt intake. I pray I never have the feeling of flying or seeing my furniture floating around the room thinking It would land on me. No one can understand what you feel or fear unless they have ever had Such a debilitating condition.

Hi Mickey. I agree it sucks. I just had my first two events this week (that were not induced by playground equipment as a child.) The nausea is great for weight loss, I lose all appetite, but it sucks in general. Hope you find some relief.

Can we discuss it? I notcied I had this condition when I started working downtown. When I was 25. Whenever I took an elevator I got terrible vertigo and I always assumed it was normal. Until when I would come home and my right eye would feel dizzy. Not til 3 and half years later, I realized my eye was always dizzy even when I closed it. It impares me when I play game, watch movies, read. Studying has been the hardest thing i eve done in my life with it. Im glad this helped you and I type this comment my right eye feel relief.

I too suffer from random periods of bpv and it has been happening since 1989. I’m so specific because I was carrying my newborn downstairs at home and was so bad I kept hitting wall and bannister. Horrified as a nurse I didn’t know what was happing but my biggest concern was getting us to a safe place. I got him into the playpen and just waited. The thing I hate most is that the RANDOM attack gives no forwarning. I do have dizziness if I move too quickly getting up but the absolute eye-jerking, room spinning, completely helpless feeling is a very awful dark cloud in my life. I never had the courage to have the maneuver because I am so sick already in it full blown I can’t imagine the extra effects. You are not alone. Unless one feels it , it can’t be understood. Currently in a flare up. Best to all who suffer, we are okay medically, just so scared.

This is a really good and accurate demonstration. I think where I have been getting it wrong is not extending my head back far enough -- e.g. 20 degrees

Good point about waiting for the eyes to stabilize before rotating. I did not know that. I do not have anything I can lay on that lets me tilt my head back (I sleep on the floor) which makes this procedure kind of challenging. :)

Put a few pillows close to the top of your back so that, when you do try this (not in your own though), you have a bit of area where your head is lower when you go backwards. Good luck.

Why in the world would you play music with this video? Most professional are aware that a high number of persons with ongoing vertigo have hearing loss. Some of us have severe hearing loss and wear devices. These devices pick up the music over the person talking. Lose the music while the person is talking!

I was actually warned, if you’ve had it for more then a few weeks and it’s not the first time, do not take any medication for it at all. That’s just disguising the symptoms and that’s not what you should be doing. It’s apparently worse for you to medicate it. Go and get it treated.

There is a better way for me- roller coasters with multiple loops and with a section of spinning. It was awful going up the hill spinning in my head and nauseous but I knew it would work and the ride always relieved my stress as I screamed and laughed. The rides are short but if there is enough centrifugal force it’ll work for me. Imagine the relief after 2 mins and not even noticing it improved. It’s not practical but it was a “by chance” discovery

I’m so sorry. The Epley only works for me short term and they think it’s also attributed to having cervical disease in the C6/7 so MS would definitely be a contributing factor. I hope you can find some relief for it. Wishing you the best 💕
