    Great video, as always. One concern that you may want to address as a follow-up in your next video, or perhaps a separate Quick Tip video: Your packed case was 49.5 lbs ...DRY. That gives you 8 oz of "wiggle" room, and that's based on YOUR scale, which may be slightly off from the scale at the airport check-in counter. Assuming the scales are close enough, that's well and good for your outbound travel. But I guarantee unless you're spending several days at destination with no diving, your wetsuit, boots and under garments WILL absorb at least 1-2 lbs of water weight that you simply will not be able to wring out no matter what. I'm very sure your case will NOT be under 50 lbs once everything is re-packed for the trip home. So, consider a follow-up video and discuss saving enough weight to account for wet/damp gear on the trip home, or maybe point out what items may need to be re-accommodated in a different bag (carry-on or 2nd check bag) to get that case back under 50 lbs. Thanks as always for all you're doing for the diving community! Cheers!

    Great video James, just wanted to react to your light in the fin tip. Never have batteries in tour checked luggage, it’s first off not allowed, second don’t know what happens with your luggage if they find out, and third, forbidden for a reason (fire hazzard in an unattended space of the aircraft)

    The Pelican 1626 is at the limits of checked baggage allowance. In Europe a maximum of L+W+H of 158 cm is allowed. The Pelican 1626 is 156.2 cm. The 1615 is 157.5 cm but has less volume as you're trading height for length.

    Thanks for the packing video lesson. I also tend to bring reg, computer, and mask in carry-on as well as an extra set of clothes since I've been left short of my checked luggage for a day or two when it ended up going somewhere else for some reason. Another possible consideration is either a strong, but soft duffle for the bendy stuff or a lesser known, but still as robust hard case. I have some Seahorse cases that are every bit as strong as Pelican, but a fraction of the price and nobody pays them any attention since they don't carry that big beacon of a name saying there's expensive stuff inside. Never had an issue with people going through my non-descript cases.

    I think a huge addition to this list is a flexible duffle bag. It is my experience your gear will get wet adding weight. It's easy to say let it dry. But it usually doesn't. We usually leave one no dive pre flight day where gear dries. Or you panick about time and just pack it. Wet gear usually adds 10 to 20 pounds. Remember James came in 1 pound over weight. The duffle let's you have a extra bag. Also as a reminder the regs were his carry on. The flexible duffle packs small with minimal weight. Also, I love the filling the gaps point. I learned to pack in the army. If you have ever been in the military you know that they want you to pack 20 lb of stuff in a 5lb bag constantly. So filling in the little gaps and holes is often important. I usually hide my mask in the fin foot pocket. Boots are another good void to fill. Weights. We all know not to pack weights but I once left a 1 pound soft weight in and it got flagged. They called me over the PA (while in count down to board) and they took everything out of my TIGHTLY packed luggage. Then a loooooooong speech about hiding contraband like nuclear material. (DC Airport) needles to say I was sweating bullets on time. So be careful about that because lead shows up as a solid white non transparent blob on xray. I often use gloves and hoods and wetsuits as packing materials. I wrap my flashlight or go pro for example in neoprene. Speaking of electronics. Don't forget chargers. I bring a cord for every item. When you get back you need to charge phones, multiple go pros or redundant lights etc. Lots of plug ins so lots of cables. Otherwise you end up with a dead battery on something. Ebay for bulk cables cheap enough to leave them if you need to. Here is a big tip. When you fly coach it's typically carry on of 1 50 pound bag. Plus a baggage fee around $75 ish. If you upgrade to first class, typically there is unlimited bags (no fees but still 50 pounds each.) So if you have wet gear on your return you can pack your wet bcd in the soft duffle. I have experienced throwing away shoes, underwater, socks and old shirts to make weight. I have also experienced ubering to 4 stores to find a suitcase to load 20 pounds over of gear. (BTW it was the last suit case at dollar general for $65 not budgeted at the end of a expensive trip) so long story $300 extra for first class and no baggage fees plus unlimited 50 pound bags. Because of this you can pack your dive buddies gear and he doesn't pay baggage. Now he is on the hook for your drinks at dinner. Smile 😃 These are a few extra travel tips. Hope they help.

    why not just pay the overweight bag fee, rather than going through all that trouble?

  • @michaelmccoy6852

    @michaelmccoy6852

    Жыл бұрын

    @@MikeS309 I didn't make the video. But my opinion is you can. But you have to pay it at least twice. If you are showing up (responsible or. Not most people don't know the cost of baggage fees.) Paying $75 at American for on the way there and $75 on the way back. I've been overweight as little as 2 pounds. Then had to travel wearing a extra t shirt and a pair of shoes in my pockets. Or pay the fee. I don't know about you. But $75 for 2 pounds seems crazy to me. Or throw away your brand new $120 hey dudes and sweet "I dove dahab and all I got was this Tshirt" shirt. What if you get really cheap tickets where you change airlines? Then it's 4 luggage fees, plus over weight fees! But $225 for all those baggage fees could go to a premium or first class seat. If you bring all your own gear, except weights for me I'm usually right on the line within 5 pounds. When I come back and my gear is still wet, I'm not 10 or 15 pounds over. Now I'm definitely paying overweight luggage fees. And let's be honest. Even sitting in the Mexico sun it never gets fully dry. Not to mention we may not have to bring much. But I like to travel with one nice outfit. One full clothing outfit. Shorts n t shirts. Then swim trunks. Then souvenirs and stuff I buy. Now two bags are over weight. But even with unlimited weight with my first class tickets the bags can only weigh so much. I did try to ship stuff home once. It cost $400! Plus my luggage. Just my opinion. My experiences.

    A great way to get similar protection to a pelican without the brand recognition is rolling tool boxes. Rigid, weather sealed, large wheels. They're not as bomb proof as the pelican but I don't regret using them. Mine are husky brand from home depot.

  • @Teampegleg

    @Teampegleg

    I like the Samsonite hard cases, not as protective as a Pelican, but looks like normal luggage. Mine has been around the world a couple of times. Tool boxers have the same issue as Pelican cases, you know it probably contains something expensive. Samsonite hard cases there are probably dozens that pass the same bag thrower everyday, and most of them just contain dirty underwear.

    Hi James, nice video. There are a few things I would like to mention. The weight of the case has all items 100% dry, that will not likely be the case coming home. Your suite case may also be non-standard size and this too can add lots of costs to your trip both ways. You said battery was in the flashlight- that is NOT ALLOWED on any flights I have been on. I carry all batteries in a bag as carry-on. I also bring battery chargers (not listed). I carry a weight scale as it helps me redistribute my luggage by weight. I carry very little cloths and buy dive t-shirts when I can and bring back home. The camera/camera gear to remember the dives needs space (GoPro3s). I would put the 2 fins opposite direction from each other, but maybe thats my OCD. I only carry my dive computers, cameras, batteries and diver certification cards/logbook and computer as carry ons. The gear loss is covered under home insurance (strange right?) and air travel insurance coverage is a joke. I often carry my own pony bottle (Top taken off and wrapped separately- as no compressed gas can be taken on flight). About 50% of time I see a customs inspection note in my luggage once I arrive saying they inspected it. If luggage lost, I can till dive with rentals if I have my C-card, my dive computers (that I am familiar with), my expensive prescription mask (so I can see the dive) and my credit cards for all the rental gear. So far I have been lucky. I hope you took a day or 2 extra before/after dives so that delayed flights/transfers do not screw up your itinerary. I tend to do live-aboard trips, and the dive boat will not wait for you. PS- the snorkel that I always carry and never use is a collapsible type so fits in the BCD or in my case my dive fanny pack.

    Prescription divemask here. One goes in my carryon and at least one spare is checked. Not gonna blowout a “trip of a lifetime” because I couldn’t read my tank pressure. Need to checkout the undies. I learned the value of a wool layer years ago when diving a lined Pinnacle divesuit. Better than adding a couple of extra mills of neoprene. Enjoy the wet down south.

    Got a couple of Surf Fur Water Parkas on your Recomendation and My wife and I really love them Diving in Maine USA we need to stay warm before and in between dives. Regarding packing, sizing the case to what will be in it is also important I bought one of those dive branded suitcases and I can hold two people's gear but it weighs in way too much for any airline. I also fly Allegiant where their limit is 10 lbs less than others so I need to sacrifice some other clothing items in order to split up my dive gear I haven't had to travel with my 7 mm yet but that one is heavy.

A video on how to properly do a check out dive would be interesting subject to cover! I have the same DR weight pockets, so I am really interested in seeing how you carry lead, considering how much will be required. Weight belt too?? I also have the 7mm Bare Reactive suit which I’ve really been happy with. One more thing.... how are you going to fit exowear under the Reactive suit..... never happen with my suit. Vest over suit is your plan, better for leak prevention? I’m looking forward to your future videos..... as normal!!

    Yes your right diving equipment is LFE, but…take your regulator in your onboard travel luggage and use your wetsuit to roll your bcd around the breakable parts, and the rest of the clothes around the rest. Dont think you really need to take a peli air, eventhough have one, i normally use a 1535 air on board for cameras, regulators and other stuff. Nice vid!

    For what it's worth, having a bunch of easily identifiable stickers makes it stand out. That's the opposite of what someone trying to casually walk off with your bag will choose. Plus, it's easier to follow with security cameras, in airports. Add that it just looks heavy, it's a bad choice for the snatch grab type run away thrives. If it's plain black, with a fuzzy ca.era picture, it would look like all the other luggage. :)

    As always great video. Question #askdiversready Started dive master training this last weekend and ended up using my rescue skills to assist in bringing an unconscious female up from 20'. A student, she didn't look well early on with mask troubles (fogged) and issues cleaning, but made it up from the first dive with little problem. The DM I was working with had moved her down the line in anticipation of a CESA skill check, but she failed to responded moments later when the OK sign was given. She then started to sway back and forth. We brought her to the surface, she was towed to shore and CPR started. Thankfully later that day we got word she will be okay, but I am still struggling with the the entire situation. I felt fortunate to be trained, but honestly....NEVER expected to use those skills learned in a rescue course.

    I think the pelican case is overkill--there is not much that could really happen if you pack neoprene in a rolling duffel (or even a regular duffel). I think the risk of theft or the box being left for another flight outweighs the minimal increase in protection. (Would not say the same for the camera gear) . Also as a fellow multiple XX-er I also try to carry on as much "on the body" gear as possible--it is pretty easy to carry on everything but fins--so hard to fit + expensive gear is on my person. BP & wings take up no room at all especially broken down. Would suck to get there and not be able to fit into a bc or wetsuit/drysuit--you can typically rent the rest. Same with mask--a crappy leaky mask is terrible. Also 49.X pounds dry going could easily be 52 pounds wet coming home--always leave space. To that end we also usually pack a few contractor bags just in case we need to make a liner to take back some wet/nasty that hasn't dried in the 1000% humid locations we go.

    A great way to ensure your light won't turn on accidentally is to flip the battery around. Most dive lights are not rated to be on for long periods above water. It would be a bummer to have a battery run out of juice, and a bigger bummer when you find out after charging your battery that your LED is burned out. Dive lights can also become fire hazards if left on and unattended.

    Possibly better/safer solutions - insert an insulating disk to prevent the battery from making a circuit (reversing the battery seems likely a recipe for something damaging, short, etc.). Another idea is to pack the flashlight but keep the battery in your carry on.

  • @MikeR_DiveR

    For the exowear, might as well go under the wetsuit. The omni-red layer in that particular vest will reflect your body heat back onto you in the water and will dry the fleece layer faster AND provide significant wind protection once you’re out of the water. The entire line of exowear is excellent for not only diving but any water sport.
