One of the biggest issues when flying with Scuba Gear is the weight. Not to mention the worse case scenario of what happens when the airline loses your luggage. Well in today's video, Instructor Trainer Bryan Stafford shows us how he packs for international travel as a Scuba Professional.

    All I'd add is that airlines have rules for carriage of lithium-Ion batteries. You need to check on rules for removable or spare batteries and whether they can travel in the hold or have to be carry on. Most torches and cameras won't be an issue but if for some reason you're bringing a big canister battery you need to check it's within the airline's Wh capacity limit (usually around 160Wh) and that you have proof of that.

    Hello RetroDiver, we have an older video talking about traveling with Back Plate and Wings, (kzread.info/dash/bejne/YoF3xJmcla3KopM.html). Another great option is to use the Pelican Air 1535 (kzread.info/dash/bejne/hIVly9Vvcsyvf5c.html) instead of a backpack. This is what a lot of our professionals here at the shop do. You are still allowed a personal item, which could be your backpack. Hope this helps.

    I do the same with my computers, regs and mask and take in my carry on. One thing to note though, some international places don't like and or allow regulators in carry on as part of local security reasons and or laws. Not an issue when entering the country but can cause problems on the way out, the Philippines is ones of those countries. Not sure if there are more, but always good check ahead of time if you can. Especially if it is somewhere you haven't been before.

    Do you do anything to keep the weight down and pack minimum bags or just suffer the airline fees. I have a big dive gear bag for traveling but if I fill it up it is way overweight. If I split things up over multiple bags then I have to pay more fees for more bags. I end und up packing the minimum of personal items in favor of dive gear and bringing extra stuff in the biggest carryon that I can get. One time I took a trip and packed just under the airline weight limit, then came home on a different airline that had a lower limit. Needless to say I spent a lot of time in the terminal re-arranging things to fit. It's not fun to walk around with a damp smelly wetsuit in your carryon.

    Hello Kevin Davison, we have always tried to pack the bare essentials on our trips. When traveling via airplane, I will always have to make sacrifices on certain items. If I keep my gear it good working order, the likelihood of it tearing up on the trip is very minimal, thus, the less I have to take with me. To be honest, sometimes I have been over weighted. In those situations, I typically just pay the extra fee and go on. Ironically, on this trip (this video was published after we traveled to Cozumel) I was over weighted on our flight back to the States, as we bought our girls way too many souvenirs, and I ended up paying the extra $100.

    Battery packages are usually the biggest issue. Most batteries are lithium which must be carried in hand luggage and cannot be from a larger capacity than 100Wh. Usually this isn't such a issue but canister lights are usually around that capacity. Batteries for heating or a dpv are much bigger and a problem for air travel. Obviously there are NiMh Batteries you can buy with traveling but those are a smaller capacity and therefore heavier. Like my 13.7AH NiMh canister light is around 5KG which is just big enough for 3 hours of light or 45 min of heating with just a vest.

    With all the restrictions by airlines, Pelican cases are not the best to take as they weight a lot. Although a good video, IMO it's not realistic. You taking way too many bags/luggage. I prefer to take all my diving gear on my carry-on with a change of clothe. Only thing I put on the checked in is my 3mm wetsuit which is no big deal if the luggage doesn't arrive for some reason.

    When my gf packs for a 7 day vacation, it involves 14 changes of clothes, 9 bikinis, and 6 pairs of shoes, lol! Seriously, how does one pack 4 changes of clothes (including underwear?) for 7 days and 7 nights?

  • @LakeHickoryScuba

    @LakeHickoryScuba

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hello Derek Walter, I have always been the type to pack less. Especially, if I have a way to wash my clothes while traveling. With my wife and kiddos, I explain to them that we are going to the tropics and only need bathing suits. This means, most days, we are wearing bathing suits, and don't need extra underwear and clothing. Usually, what we travel down with is what we wear on the way back home. We typically use travel size toiletries, so that takes us very little room. And lastly, shoes is a no go for the tropics. One pair of shoes to wear down and back, and the rest are flip flops, crocs, or sandals. It has always worked for us.
