great info. I dive the transpak in both recreational and side mount. I have both there regs ( older version ) as well as others. And as you stste they are very good for almost all aspects of diving that you may consider. Lamar does a great job in developing all of his gear and accessories and tests everything before introducing to market. good advice to your followers.

I know you work with Dive Rite, but I think the best combination for recreational diving is XTX50 second stage with DXT first stage and XTX40 octo, you can use any SPG that you like, it doesn't matter, just let it be a good brand (ScubaPro, Apex, Mares, Poseidon ...)

I have been diving mine for over a year now and they have held up great. The biggest reason for my purchase was because pretty much all their gear is focused more towards tec diving and that is a path I plan to take in the future. The other is them being an American owened and operated company. I have their trans pac BCD and the fins and so far I like everything. The fins did take a bit to get used to after diving with mares fins previously.

Awesome video James - thanks… Based on this setup and video I have already ordered new hoses for my wife and myself. 120/56 cm setup for us both to replace the factory setup of 90/72 cm hoses. We are both SSI Stress and Rescue divers and this setup support our training and mindset of primary donate better in every day diving. We choose the 120 cm hose over 100 due to a lot of cold water drysuit diving.

solid setup. I like the primary donate. Although I dive a 7ft hose for recreational diving. No diving in restrictions. But I like the room it gives me in alt air shares. And with a bit of practice it is easy to manage and will set me up well for any future diving progressions.

I have it, my only change besides what you noted was the hose length we’re slightly too short for a taller person. But for sure is the best bang for buck!

Bought this last year as a 1st and single 2nd stage set up only, without octo and no spg. DIN connector. Comes with a nice braided hose. No boltsnap in the package. The rotating turet is very nice feature. I add a 60⁰ swivel on the 2nd stage hose joint, makes it a whole lot easier to move around. The included longer bitetabs mouthpiece does not fit me well so I replaced it with a standard shorter mouthpiece. The 2'nd stage can be reversed to left hose routing if needed. A good startup set which can convert to a sidemount setup if you want. Overall a nice reg set and also to consider how it was priced compared to other brands, a very good purchase for me.

A big reason review videos shouldn't be biased is because these are life support systems. If you were to just tell us all the good of a system or kit and ignore the negatives because of a sponsorship then it could lead to death. Thank you for being as unbiased as possible.

I like regulators that need little to no servicing. I can see a lot of service requirements in these regs. Swivel turret, ball joints and the like. They are also another point of failure. You are correct about when an out of air situation happens. They will usually always take your reg from your mouth. Your octo on a necklace is much easier to find. PADI have a weird way of ignoring reality with the donation of air. Octo hoses should always be at least 40 inches or more, to keep that panicked, out of air diver at arms length. Hello James, I have been thoroughly enjoying your videos since I have discovered your page! Thanks for the great info on the Dive Rite reg set. I've been considering purchasing a back up set (cause you never know). I currently use HOG with the D1X first stage, HOG Classic 2.0 second stage, and the HOG REC-TEC Octo. It's a great set and has the features you mentioned on the Dive Rite.

I watched the "How to attach a boltsnap" vid when you put it out. That was b4 my OW. I used that vid to attach my boltsnaps where I wanted. I just had the knot I tied let go. Mind you, it had over 200 dives on it, so I am good with that.

Diverite makes fantastic gear. Great content James.

I like the idea of Dive Gear Express' regs and their reasonable and open repair kit for those that are comfortable servicing their own gear. Service kits are $20/$30 and available to the general public. Yes, this is life support equipment so only go self-service if you're comfortable doing it and have the tools but I've seen some horror stories of repairs done by 'professionals' so... There are some special tools and specifications to follow but it's not rocket science once you know things (ie: don't lube up with petroleum grease and put it on a 100% O2 bottle...)

Been looking at this reg set up for a couple months. Chalk this up for another DR review leading me to a purchase.

One of the things that I am interested in when it comes to regulators is medium- to long-term serviceability. Although that may not be an extent that is necessary, I bought my first regulator set (from a major brand) second-hand in 1988, and it is still serviceable, i.e. the service technicians can still easily get the parts, 34 years later. It is also a regulator set that I would still dive today without hesitation, although the breathing is not as good as today's top regulators (it is comparable to today's budget sets). Conversely, I purchased second-hand a ~20-year-old regulator set from another quite reputable manufacturer, mainly because I was interested in the design of the 2nd stage, only to find out that there are no more service parts available, and it cannot be serviced. That means, regulators from certain manufacturers become mere trash after a certain while, while others have a track record of long-term serviceability.

Have my first set from Sherwood. Magnum Blizzard first and the Oasis octi. Standard Analog gauges from 1988 also. From Michigan now fl. Haven't dove in years as I don't like salt water. Had reg. Rebuilt for first-time several years ago with new silicone '0' rings but haven't dove since due to back injuries. In my opinion the dry first stage may not have the swivel ability but is a solid old school choice still today. I saw the old parts and did not see any deterioration at all ! Never had an ounce of trouble with it. Just purchased a full face scuba pro mask used 3 times and then bought the G-250 second and mk 20 first. Along with the 095 Octo. Rebuilt 250 with S valve new spring , ss volcano and the plus the long barrel piece by the adjuster. Purchased the gsuge adjusting tool and got the valve down to 8.5 # before fre e flow. Took old volcano and put in Octo instead of nylon unit. Wow ! These 20 year old regulators breath lIke you don't have it in your mouth ! Can't wait to get wet now once again.

I have the same regs for my doubles and absolutely love them. I actually like the way they breathe better than the Apeks. BTW: great camera work at the beginning of the video!

Every reg I own is from the dive rite xt series. I use them for doubles, sidemount, bottom stages, deco regs, everything. I have yet to encounter a situation where they weren't excellent.

Can you open them and clear the membrane without tools and with gloves on?

I do believe that Dive Rite offers a long hose version of that package. I think it is one of their off catalog options.

I have a set and do think they are good. I must add that the plastic used looks and feels a bit cheaper than other brands. That is a shame but in my eyes easily fixable. Also some other issues that I hope diverite will still fix for me :)

Hello. PADI OW Certified on Aug 6 2023!! I purchased a set of Genesis Prana Reg and Octo, Sherwood 3 Gauge Console for my First Set.

Any regulator set that moves in the direction of a long hose primary donate gets my vote. Extra points for making the primary yellow.

DIveRite as long as they arrive with no shipping damage don't wast money on fancy one time use shipping materials. Keep the retail price as slim a possible. 👍

You don't need to cut the boot to get rid of it. Warm water os hot air gun is enough. Well warmed up boot allows the spg to pop out easily. For rec reg the primary hose of 1.5 m/5 ft is good. You route the hose undr your riht am and aroun your nec. Very comfortable to use and easy to donate.

I would vote for Deep 6. Love there business model, good price, nice looking and many say the work of breathing is better than other regs. I try to shoot for products that are direct to consumer. I have no problems with Dive Rite, just want to say that. I also don't want anyone to skimp on prices on regs. These are not that expensive compared to the cost of other scuba equipment.

To be honest, I choose regulator also by how they look like, you keep them for years, so they should look pretty. So they do, they got a beautiful design, yes all regulators do the very same, but it doesn't mean they must look exactly the same. And those really got their own design, even if it's not much, but you don't feel bord after a year. 😊

I need to buy my first reg set. I'll look into this one. Also leaning heavy into Dive Rite for my first back plate and wing set up. I'm so done with rental gear.

Thanks for the review. I asked several tec divers (cave and wreck divers) if dive rite is ok for sidemount tec, and almost all of them said "we don't really recommend". Any idea why? Great video & love the look of this reg set up, but a unfortunately the only option in the uk seems to be ordering from the US, with tax that that involves 🙄

You have to take into account that Apeks is a UK brand sold in the US while Dive Rite is American. By the time that XT reg arrives in Europe it'll probably cost as much as an Apeks one.

Ah yes; what reg to buy? I am an old fart diver and I've had many regs. Most of them were easy breathing and well made, but one of the things I've found over the years is that some companies change their models so frequently that eventually parts are scarce. Of course you'll never know how long this will be but it something to think about. Another factor is the cost of overhaul and frequency. Those high end regs are certainly more expensive to service. My XTX200 costs twice as much to overhaul as my old Mares MR12 which is still serviceable, and the performance is better but not crazy better for theXTX. So....... ya just never know. Great presentation as always James!

Agreed, i have a Scubapro Mark X set, for me nothing fancier is needed. It's on a 150cm hose, it has a 109 as a backup. Service kit is around $15 for them, still available from the shelf. I had a new Mares, the front plastic just broke into pieces in storage, it was pretty hard and pricy to find a replacement. I also have a Poseidon Jetstream kit, if i ever make a tech course, i'll use it, for rec, the Scubapro is just fine. Poseidon is more expensive to service, but it's top. :)

Dive Rite seems to support their regs pretty well, though they don't have super long track record to analyze. But you can still get service kits for their older regs, and the latest update was just to update the purge cover. Overhaul wise, DR recommends a 2 year overhaul period. Kits are about overage, and service prices are average too with a moderately large service network in the US with mail in service available from a few companies.

@@toriless some companies are known for really long support. Like Scubapro, which still provides parts for the Mk10, a reg released in 1984. That is like going to Ford and getting parts for a 1950s F-100.

I've seen many regs, Mares, Oceanic, Beuchat, 10 years old, and can't find spare parts for them. Yeah, throw them away and buy a new one every 5 years. :/ BTW scubapro is going down lately reliability-wise, but at least they have parts.

How do you feel about posidon regs specifically the cyklon 5000 i like the idea of a retro style reg that has been used in military

do you think it is as good as the Mark 25 scubapro? I can tell the difference when I dive lessor quality regs back to back with my MK25. It's the only primary reg that I've used where I was "like Wow". I purchased the hollis DCX sidemount set and it's good, but it's not the same as my MK25.

Hi James, may I ask what mask or masks you are wearing at the following time points in the video? 0:45, 1:02, 1:36, 1:55, 4:07, 4:10, 4:15, 8:40? Seem different types/brands, and different from the Apeks VX1 that you are linking. Asking because I am wondering if they fit my face, and I would like to try. Thank you!

These are good regs, HOWEVER, while working at my dive shop, our rental dive rite xt regs as well as 2 of our customers ran into issues when they encountered below freezing air temps. Its a very uncommon issue, but we were able to replicate the problems by sticking them in our freezer. I personally don't work on the regs so I can't specifically state the issue at hand but I do know that this reg has run into issues in cold AIR temps.

@@the.mr.beacher The high pressure seat would constrict with the cold temperatures causing air to leak into the intermediate pressure chamber that causes the intermediate pressure to climb and make the regs free flow. In my opinion, Apeks makes a much more reliable cold water regulator however dive rite xt breathes a bit better than the apeks xtx line although not by much.

I replaced my diverite Regis with Deep6 set which work better and the swivel heads don’t hang on the valves. Also deep6 are self serviced and cost 1/3rd less

I think the Diverite regulators are a good value for the money. I needed a new second stage and almost bought the Diverite. As far as the setup. I have always been a bit different. I do not like the short hose on the backup. I am 6'5" and my cylinder rides a bit lower on my back. So the short hose pulls too much. I use two 40 inch hoses and route them both under my right arm. And have 90 degree swivels on both. Attach the bolt snaps with cave line and use 2" brass and glass SPG without a rubber boot.. I have been using primary donate since I became an instructor in 1982. And still think it is the way to go. I prefer the FT1 first stage. I realize that is not the norm. Like I said I am a bit different. Otherwise I dive this same type setup. And like many think this type setup should become the standard setup. I would have pointed out how the Elbow prevents the hose from kinking when you donate (no S in the hose). And how the Diverite second stages can route the hose from the right or left side. As always great job. Keep up the great videos.

What is the depth rating for these? Also what is the temperature rating for these?

You should call your channel Dive Rite reviews it's mostly all you support now a days and I get it because they send you dive gear. I use to like seeing your reviews but recently all I see are more and more reviews about them. I own way best gear then what they have and that is what I like to see more of, can't understand why other companies can't send you gear just to review that doesn't sound right for some reason unless your not sending them back to the company's..oh well

Looks like a great set for newbie divers, although do rec divers still use SPGs ordinarily? I have a long hose on my primary simply because in case of _actual use_ in a share-air situation, it gives buddies a bit of separation and flexibility...buddy can be well established on a boat ladder, for eg. while still having air to breathe. Cuddle distance isn't always a good thing. But...always enjoy your videos, James!

I am planning on getting this set. Most likely will replace SPG with QD to attach transmitter. The dive is over if either fails and you have two points of failure with both. So I fall into the camp of not needing an SPG with AI computer. Also with a back mounted single, at least for me, would be a rec dive. But I am glad the SPG is there, because would they really charge less for the set? Now I will have it if I need it.

Why does the second stage appears to be carbon fiber and or Hera just plastic? Do you know the difference with the FT? Thank you for your videos

James I want to make a trip to Florida and reearn my open water card and get my nitrox card. I live in NC, but want to get this done with tropical dives. Pls recommend an instructor to me. Thanks

Hey James, excellent excellent review. DiveRite does indeed make some excellent gear at incredible value. When my wife and I needed regs, I went with the DGX Gears Xtra Reg set. At the time, I could t source these from DiveRite. From what I can tell, isn’t the DGX Gears Xtra the same as this set. I think if I remember correctly, DGX rebrands DiveRite gear? If I remember that accurately, am I also correct in understanding this Reg set and the DGX are same/same? As always, thanks so much for the excellent content. Be well!

What is the difference between the DR XT Reg AOW Package, w/BAR, DIN or the one with PSI, Yoke?

Where we are the apeks xtx 200 set with octo is around £100 cheaper than this, what would be your recommendation for a new diver ? I like the fact it has everything included, but will I get more for my money with the xtx 200 and buying a gauge which puts me at still marginally less money

I still prefer the Mares Abyss. No need for breath resistance adjuster oder venturi. Just bought a complete setup, Mares 52x 1st stage, the classic Abyss 2nd and Octo, premounted with Miflex hoses. Included is a SPG and Reg Bag. Price? 500$ in Germany.

Thank you for this. I have been looking at this for a very long time. It has been over a decade since I have been in the water and last few years health problems would have prevented me. I most likely won't be diving outside the mid-west. Most shops offer the short hose in 28" or shorter than 22" without charge. I am average height and don't think the 22" short hose will be a problem for me. If I am using it, it means I am returning to the surface. I have been debating if I wanted to switch the 40" hose for a 84" at point of purchase. I think I will keep the set as it comes. Most of the quarry diving I face to face for share is no problem and I will like the routing of 40" better. I will probably remove the HP hose and SPG add a HP hose with HP QD for transmitter to route along shoulder strap.

How do you go about servicing them in the UK. (And the rest of the world?) Are parts easy to come by? Thanks

Base level piston regulators and basic first stages. Good for shallow diving. No frills, not excellent. They are Fiats, not Ferraris.

The best?? Theres alot of regs. that can do the same. I dont care so much about the specs. when i buy a regset, i set up to suit my needs. One thing that is importent to me is, is it simple, can i get the service kit and can i open and service it with very few tools.

Normally I just "silently" admire your work, but this video got my thumbs itching a bit... As someone who is interested in this combo, I noticed one drawback, and I would love to suggest this as potential topic for one of your videos maybe. Personally I would love to buy this product, but after quick online search I quickly realized that it is not really available in my market. This then led me to conclusion that also, there are no shops that will sevice it going forward. Just a thought, how about making video on how to service this reg per Dive Rite's instruction? I also plan to reach out to Dive Rite with this, but thought to share it here as well. Keep diving safely and often(ly).

Hmm Dive Rite gear seems to have low availability in Europe, particularly in Germany. Is getting a more "obscure" brand reg serviced more of a hassle than "major" brands like Scubapro?

I have the same issue with the bungee tabs and the clunky plastic boot of SPG. Do you know if there is anyway removing the plastic boot without damaging it?

Yes. If you soak it in hot water, the plastic softens and you can pop the gauge out of the housing and pull through some hose. Then remove the gauge from the hose and pull the hose back out, then reattach the gauge.

My money is on Poseidon..You can't over breath them at any depth..They like it deep..

A video on primary donate would be nice. I'm a new diver and was taught the "classic" octopus way. Don't really understand the benefits of primary donate... why not have the octopus on a long hose nicely tucked in the BCD in the "triangle of life" (that's a stupid name, really) :D

The concept is you're donating a 2nd stage that you know 100% is working properly in that moment. You may not know exactly what is going on, or how long they've been without air. Every single second counts in an emergency. Once they've gotten some air, you can adjust accordingly.

Does it do cold water and do they sell in the UK ?

What about the aspiring tech diver? Will this reg stand up to the task at 50m? (With the appropriate adjustments of course - another first stage, proper long hose etc )

Absolutely. I use the XT regs for technical and cave diving. and have found them to be very versatile. I use them for back gas, sidemount, stages, everything. My only preference is that I always request them to be sent with rubber hoses only and I don't use color coded equipment so all of my 2nd stages are black.

Also, many tech divers service their own regs. But if you aren't a dive rite dealer you can't get the service kits. Little known fact though... Dive Gear Express kits are the exact same kit and are available to anyone on their website. (Never service your own regulators unless you've been properly trained by the manufacturer)

I have both the Mk17/g260 and the dive rite regulators. I dive northern waters and I prefer my dive rite set for two reasons. One reason is the purge button on the second stage. The g260 has a center button and some times when I go to grab it my palm is just enough force to get it to purge and shoot out of my mouth. The dive rite has a full rubber front and has yet to do that to me. I also like the more dainty mouth piece on the dive rite. (This can easily be changed on the g260). Pros that the Mk17/g260 has over the dive rite is materials. The Mk17 has a hard cap on its bottom where the dive rite is a diaphragm rubber and I think the plastics scuba pro uses on the g260 seem better quality than the dive rite.

Dive Rite makes great stuff.. but for regs, I'm a diehard Atomic guy. I've put them through some real shit. Literally thousands of ocean dives on my almost 20 year old T1X, up to 200ft. Still zero breathing effort. I always tell new divers to get Dive Rite BP+Wing setups for their first BC.

Fun fact: you don't have to cut away the plastic boot. Soak it in hot, soapy water, and it slides right off.

Certainly depends on geographical location. Where I live, nothing gets even close to the value for money you get with Apeks.

nice set ,but the elbow on the primary is not necessary. and an additional failure point.

Do they have to be sent back to DR for service/rebuilds?

Nope they use generic diaphragm parts kits and can be serviced easily by any tech familiar with that style reg

There are many Diverite dealers look at their website.

In every out of air situation I've ever witnessed, the person either panicked and tried to go to the surface, or went for the bright yellow octo. Theres plenty of merit for primary donation, but I've yet to see someone go for the black reg. Whichever one is easier to see is what they've gone to in my experience.

can i get it serviced in egypt?

It's a pity, that Dive Rite is not a thing here in Germany. You can buy them online, but you won't get service here, which is a dealbreaker.

Locally in Malaysia the reg kit can be purchased through our distributor A & L and their dealer network. They can also be purchased through any of our online dealers.

I have dive rite reg. My gf has Apex. For some reason hers breaths much easier than mine. I had it serviced 2 weeks ago with the guy the serviced my gf Apex. Still doesn't breath as easy as hers. Also when I invert I get breath in salt water. No idea why. I do love me dive rite BCD. Reg, not so much.
