I'm gonna try this with some yarn I bought that's a bit too bright of an orange for what I want! I'm hoping to get a rusty copper color. This video is so helpful, thank you ❤

for anyone wondering, the reason the aluminium pot can help is that aluminium/alum works as a mordant to help set the dye. soaking the fibre in soya milk isn't a true mordant (in the chemical sense) but it's a step more commonly used for dying cellulose fibres (from plants - cotton etc) rather than protein fibres (from animals - wool, silk etc). dye binds much more easily to protein fibres, so soaking in soya milk helps coat cellulose fibre in protein to make the dye bind better. not sure of the extent to which soaking wool also helps it, but i imagine it can't hurt!

Beautiful onion dye and it matches the color of your hair. I would like to try this.

I saw the thumbnail for this video with dry yarn going into the vat and was like, holup. :) Glad you mentioned soaking it in the video. Personally I find soaking the yarn overnight before dyeing to be best for good color absorption. I dye with kitchen scraps quite a bit and I have always loved the results. Onions give quite a good range of colours ranging from yellows to browns. Great video! The only thing I would add is to store the onion peels in a paper bag so they have good ventilation and don’t go all moldy on you.

@@WellLovedKnits Awesome :) There is something so special about yarn you dye yourself, isn't there. Can't wait to see what you make. I really like your tip about using an aluminum pot to dye for bright colors. I was mordanting with alum then dyeing in a stainless steel vat, but I will try skipping the mordant and dyeing in an aluminum pot a go. I've almost got enough peels stored up for another dye lot.

the hanks of yarn turned out so beautiful! i didnt know that with onion skins you could make something absolutely gorgeous Can you please make a video next for dyeing yarn with avocado? would really appreciate that 💕 💕

When you said baking, I was like yay! just like me! I did a lots of baking and only started like December last year and now I've baked countless of breads and quite good at it now. And then starting June this year my country under total lockdown again till August and since then I've watched many knitting videos like yours and love yours a lot but sadly because I'm in a country where we had summer almost all year round I can't use any wool or animal yarns although I love to have or knit with natural fibers. I bought many skeins of bamboo yarn in white and maybe I can try to dye them a few. Yours turned out really nice! Really enjoyed your videos! Keep it up~~

@@dcantu-paez4308 I put all the recipes in the descriptions on my videos or in the video itself. The recipe on my videos are made from many trials and error from many combine or single recipe to suit my taste and my bread maker settings.

Lol I’m four months late, but I’ve dyed yarn with beet juice before and it makes a beautiful maroony-purple color, carrot also works

This is fun! I just got some undyed wool and thought I would dye them and make socks for Xmas gifts at work. But I got some greener shades dye. There are literally no instructions. My package just came yesterday so this is perfect timing. And kind of inspiring me to start this project sooner rather than later. The lack of directions and my first time doing something like this was kind of freaking me out. But If you can make beautiful dye out of some old onion skins I’m sure I can figure this out! …right?

Thank you! Not yet, I have an old thing of turmeric in my pantry that I could use which may be perfect for my project. The only thing I've heard is that turmeric's color doesn't last very long on the fibers.

I’ve dyed with turmeric. Make sure you get a good turmeric because the color will change quite a bit depending on the quality 😂 I learned my lesson. Cheap turmeric gave me bright yellow yarn and a higher quality turmeric gave me a darker mustard yellow

Tumeric will not last it comes out vibrant but will fade super quick. However, yellow onion skins will give you a pretty vibrant yellow. Yellow onion skins have been my easiest and most successful dye.

as someone who has zero patience with dyeing, i think i’ll stick to jacquard powder dyes lol if i ever even consider dyeing again

did you dry the wool after the soy bath and before the dye bath?

Actually not at all! The house may smell a bit like onion soup while you're making the dye, but skeins do not :)

Beets, red cabbage, berries and spinach will dye but they are colourfast, so it will go away soon.

are the steps transferrable to other kinds of natural dyes? i don't eat enough onions to dye with onion skins hahaha

Yes! I’ve done avocados and carrot tops also. You can do some flowers, but I haven’t tried yet.
