You are, as always, such fun while being informative. I think you'd be a great teacher for young kids, but I'm glad you're teaching us. You mention food coloring, which is what I use. I think the colors can be great, and more colorfast than some of the powdered dyes as well. Do you feel there is a quality difference between the two?
@ExpressionFiberArts

I think the difference is the variance in color that you can get with certain "professional dyes" that you would not be able to achieve with food coloring. Hope this helps!

Nice video. Your instructions are awesome! You taught me how to knit. I started with your videos when I knew absolutely nothing. I have a request: Your ball of yarn is much neater than mine. Will you do a video on that when you have time? Also, I buy skeins at the store and commonly have a hard time finding the end in the middle of the skein. When this happens, I end up having to untangle a mess before I even start winding my ball of yarn. Is there a trick?

I know this is an older video, but everyone should wear a respirator mask that powder becomes airborne quick and is very very dangerous. . Also heat the fiber more so it will not bleed. Unless you are using a different type of acid dye follow a different video. All ways rinse fibers too. Please be safe.

Those are great tips. Anyone who is dyeing fiber should always follow the safety precautions for the product they're using.

video idea- blocking techniques with or without tools, sweaters before or after assembling and shawls. Weting spray misting vs soaking before blocking. The more i looked into how to block the more variables. Not only did it seem project related, but also fiber related. And socks, you need to block socks?Ugh, am so confused. Can you help remove the mysteries of blocking?
@ExpressionFiberArts

A comprehensive blocking tutorial is a fantastic idea! Thanks for sharing!
How about washing it? does the dye come out at all? Does it bleed into the other colors or leech out onto other fabrics you're washing it with?
@ExpressionFiberArts
2 жыл бұрын
It's possible depending especially on the dye color that you'll see some additional bleeding. Once you've made something with your hand-dyed yarn, I suggest soaking it to wet block the finished piece to see if any of the dye is still bleeding out, and before washing it with other items, making sure the dye is fast.

Since this video was reordered a while ago and Chandi doesn't dye yarn herself anymore she doesn't remember any details regarding this video. I'm very sorry about that. But here is a source that might provide some guidance: www.ritdye.com/instructions/how-to-dye-yarn/#:~:text=For%20cotton%20yarn%2C%20add%202,and%20add%20to%20the%20dyebath. I hope this is helpful. 💛
You should wash out the yarn after dyeing to remove any citric acid, vinegar or especially if you’ve used food colouring or koolaid to dye your yarn.

We use commercial grade dyes that we purchase in bulk, but Jacquard dyes are a good option for dyeing at home.
How much money does it cost o make per skein? If the retail value is $30, how much would it cost to make that skein? Depending on the cost, I might have to look into that.
@ExpressionFiberArts
5 жыл бұрын
It depends on fiber content and quality, the cost of dyes, citric acid, etc. When you buy undyed yarn you often have to buy in bulk. For example, we order a minimum of 300 kg per yarn base. If you're just getting started, I'd look up wholesale undyed yarn companies who can offer small minimums. Hope this helps a little bit. ❤️
How to do a Self striping rainbow with arylic yarn?
@Rowanstarr

Use a dye that works with acrylic. Then you are going to have to figure out how big you want your striping
I have been going through all your videos. Trying this crochet out to stimulate my brain while recovering from brain surgery. I feel kind of silly for asking this but need some clarification as I'm trying your beenie. You use dk and the G hook if I recall correctly. The yarn itself to use a G do you literally look for yarn that says 4mm on the label? This is where I'm getting confused, the size hook to the size of the yarn.
@ExpressionFiberArts

Sometimes yarns will show you the suggested hook size, yes. But always try out a small swatch to make sure you like the match. Thanks!

@@ExpressionFiberArts Hmmmm...yarn base? Um..well.... I'm a newbie to dyeing my own yarn. Which would you recommend for someone who has no clue what I'm doing?
@ExpressionFiberArts
5 жыл бұрын
I would find some cheaper wool at someplace like Michaels or JoAnn's craft store. I would practice on that before purchasing some of the more expensive yarn. I would start with a medium weight base, such as sport or worsted. One of the things to watch out for: animal fibers are easily dyed. Man-made fibers need specialized dyeing products. So, if you get a yarn that has a large content of man-made fibers, the color of your yarn won't be as rich. Hope this helps.
