I know its much easier on fretless, but it is possible to do it on fretted basses too. I cant get it to slide back and forth or as far as ur doing in the video on my fretted bass, but i can slide a natural harmonic 4 frets tops. Its really fun and a great technique. I want to buy a fretless bass and learn how to play it proficiently
When I got my fretless bass I said to some other musicians, I am going to overdo slides at first, because that’s what I do. But after I get it out of system, I am still going to do them, still probably more than most, but not on everything I play.
A little extra gain helps too.
Tony Franklin invented this thing

Great bassist but... Invented? I think even Mick Karn did that before him

Guys, hold on, calm on - there are may be many inventors, not only one. Every one could bring something into this technique, make something with any aspect.

Clever Girl 👍
Sounds like a slide whistle 😂
Honestly I’d be worried if someone couldn’t figure this out. It’s practiceing it to make it sound good that’s the special ingredient
never realised some drive can make a fretless line extra funky, I know the Jaco burp was already funky but thought that was due to the bridge pup
I can only imagine how much that bass cost.

@@devinebass I love those late 70’s Ibanez guitars and basses. I have a 78 Musician Series guitar and I absolutely love it.
That tone to me is incredible. What’s the set up for it?
I have that same Ibanez Musician Series!!! Awesome. A Japanese Alembic.

Amazing basses!! 🔥🔥🔥
I love your videos and I am a guitar player!!
I always listen to these songs like China Crisis- "Christian", Nick Heyward- "Whistle Down the Wind" and Michael Manring- "Red Right Turning". I didn't know then they used fretless bass.
Percy Jones was the master of this style
Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam did this in the “Ten” sessions, songs like Garden, Just a Girl, and Even Flow as well. Killer sound!
Originally seen and heard two days ago at the “Kantine” here in cologne Germany🥳🥳👌🏻😎😍😍😍
Cool Scott
Get a look on Arthur Maia, a legendary brazilian bassist who played some songs using this technique

oooo not many ppl talk about this! u can actually do this on a fretted bass too (won't last nearly as long tho) and also on guitar!
oh that's awesome, I played bass for a long long time and did not know that's how you did it, I always hovered my finger and it always sort of worked but not really

Chris Vega
Is it just me or when he played the "beautiful" part it sounded like Garden by Dinosaur Jr.?
Play a slidy version of the jurassic park theme on that bad mamma jamma
Eso también se puede hacer incluso con trastes.... Es más difícil pero no imposible
Sounds like me after beans.

why does this only work on a fretless?
@carsbass6903
9 ай бұрын
Because frets make the string go up and down as you slide it, causing the pressure from your finger to mute the harmonic instead of slide it
@MJ98774
9 ай бұрын
You can slide harmonics on fretted bass, the note just decays quicker but it can be done
Don’t feel like reading through all the comments to find out if someone’s already said this, but doesn’t that example at the end begin to sound like the theme from Jurassic Park?
But the harmonic dies whèn I press it dowm..
First also that’s heckin cool
It work just on fretless?
@devinebass

It can be done on fretted but it won't sound as smooth, and you can't do it as expressively
How do you achieve that tone?
