How to Mount Your FC in Any Orientation (AND WHY I DO THIS SO OFTEN)

Once you realize you can mount your FC and/or ESC in any orientation, it opens up a lot of possibilities for custom builds. Here's how I do it! Links to related videos below:

    If you use Betaflight 4.3 with the latest Configurator, this process will be even easier. They added a tool on the Motors tab of the Configurator which lets you reorder the motors more easily! The steps shown in this video will still work, but there is now an easier way. The steps that I show in the ECS firmware are still the same regardless.

    Thanks for explaining the motor resource stuff in the CLI. I could never seem to get rotating the FC in Betaflight to work and now I know why. It’s good to know both methods though, for instance, a Silverware board pretty much has to be rotated in the radio. I also modified an Eachine E010 for long range flights by mounting a camera on the roll axis for better antenna positioning, and I had to swap roll and pitch in the transmitter for that build. There’s a video of that on my channel if you’re interested. Thank you for making all of your amazing videos...I am grateful for all I have learned from you.

    Thank you so much for this video! I have one question about your babytooth build. Which receiver do you use for that and how did you hook it up to the board? Thanks.

  • @MrShutterBug

    @MrShutterBug

    3 жыл бұрын

    The Babytooth with the black Flywoo motors has an XM+. I didn’t use the receiver built into the FC because it has terrible range (even for a whoop board). Fortunately, the Crazybee Lite FC has an extra UART and an extra inverted Rx pad for SBUS. The pads are small, but you’ll see them if you pull up a wiring diagram for that board. The Digital Babytooth, use Crossfire.

    I wonder if you could simplify this build, by using the stock canopy and just trimming and cutting it down until it has enough prop clearance to fit the bigger props. Idk, I don't own this kwad, so I'm asking you.

    Oh this great thanks man, thought i was toasted, have to mount the fc facing backward instead of forward, due to constraints of the build as I have to mount the ESC facing backward also and have no 8 pin to 8 pin that's long enough, so basically i can do that and just change the yaw angle setting in betaflight!?

  • @MrShutterBug

    @MrShutterBug

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, you need to change the board offset yaw, but you also have to make sure betaflight knows which motors are in which positions. You can follow the same steps that I showed here, or if you want to try the Betaflight 4.3 RC (and matching RC configurator), then they have a new motor remapping tool that should make it even easier. Good luck. :-)

    If you put the FC upside down is it enough to change the motors? I would think the gyro also should change but can you set that as well?

  • @MrShutterBug

    If you flip the FC upside down, then you will to tell Betaflight that the board orientation was rotated by 180 degrees. Which axis depends on how you flipped it. In other words, if the same end of the FC is in the front, then it was a 180 degree roll. If the front of the FC is now in the back of the drone, then it was a 180 degree pitch. Now, if it is an AIO FC, then flipping the FC means you also need to swap the motor resources (left to right, or front to back). Make sense?

    Hey my man. Hope u can help. I destroyed my first version of this so i decided to get a new one and redue it. It flew just fine stock, then i did all mods and rotations and motor remapping. When i go to arm i get the "BOOTGRACE" code now. Any clue as to why? I did notice the beeper was on the same pin as motor 1 so when i remapped motor 1 to 4 would that be an issue?

  • @MrShutterBug

    @MrShutterBug

    3 жыл бұрын

    To know if you got the motor mapping correct, I suggest you take the props off, plug in a battery, connect to betaflight, and use the Motors tab to spin each motor one at a time. Then you can verify that the correct motor spins and that it spins in the correct direction. I looked up the "BOOTGRACE" code. It means that you are trying to arm too soon after powering on. You have to wait a short period of time before arming, for safety. That time is controlled by CLI command "pwr_on_arm_grace" and defaults to 5 seconds. If you get "BOOTGRACE" even after waiting several seconds, then maybe your arming switch isn't mapped the way you think it is? Check it on the Modes tab in betaflight. Good luck!

    @@MrShutterBug thanka for ur help. It was an error on my part. I remamped 2 motors incorectly. Luckily i have 2 of these so i looked up motor resource on the first one and mapped the motors on the second one the way the first one was assigned. Luckily they are identical and i was able to fix it that way, otherwise i may not of found the original orientation. Im thinking the bootgrace code was because i remamped 1 of the motors to a pin that gets a constant flow of power or somthing like that. Once i remapped bootgrace went away and it has worked perfect since. Other than now i have to recalibrate the fc everytime i plug in a new battery, no clue what thats about but not to big of a problem, just annoying. Thanks again for ur help and infomative videos, plus i miss living in washington and ur vids are extra special to me cause they are from my home in a way. • @MrShutterBug

    @MrShutterBug

    3 жыл бұрын

    When I made the video about the Nanohawk conversion, I was using stock Emuflight 0.3.3 PIDs. My usual rates are Rate = 2.1, Super Rate = 0, Expo = 0.4 (all 3 axes). My rates are pretty twitchy in the middle, but I like it because the response is almost linear all the way to the end. That makes it very predictable once you get used to it. Just my preference. Cheers!
