Crux3 + Insta360 GO | Lets see what it can do!

Trying out the Happymodel Crux3. The specs are very similar to a Babytooth, but the motor KV is lower because it is designed for 2S. Lets put it to the test and find out what it can do! Product links and related videos below...

    Fun fact: jello is caused by the rolling shutter effect. It happens when the image shifts due to vibration WHILE the camera is in the middle of reading data from the image sensor. Cameras typically read that data from top to bottom, so jello usually manifests as horizontal waves in the image (because the cam angle shifted since the time the previous rows of pixels were scanned). Well this Insta360 GO is mounted sideways, which means the scan line actually goes from right to left. As a result, the jello in this video forms vertical waves in the image. I wish it wasn’t there, but I still think it’s interesting to see how it works. Other cameras that are capable of high frame rates (120Hz, 240Hz, etc...) often have less jello, even when recording at lower frame rates because the sensor read happens more quickly. That’s really the determining factor.

    I've been flying this quad quite a bit with the Insta360 Go mount. I actually epoxied the mount directly to the canopy, and that completely eliminated the jello for me. Now that the Insta360 Go 2 is out, though, I'm gonna need to buy a new canopy and make a new mount for it. I'm hoping the extra weight of the Insta360 Go 2 won't hurt the performance too much!

    My observation with Caddx Ant Lite on a tiny whoop is that jello is especially visible in very bright situations. It seems to me that in such situations the shutter speed of the camera is fast enough to show the high frequent vibrations of the spinning motors and its disbalance. Counting the jello waves in one image of the video feet may even allow to "calculate" the RPM of your motors. In my case a trial calculation resulted in some reasonable RPM numbers (maybe just by accident?): ~11 jello waves x 60 FPS x 60 s = 39.600 RPM (on a 1s whoop with 19.000 kV motors -> 2.1V). Anybody with similar observations?

  • @MrShutterBug

    @MrShutterBug

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@kolibrif8242 the jello may match motor RPMs, but I don’t think that will always be true. The frame itself could resonate at specific frequencies too. Either way, it’s good to be able to measure the impact! Low shutter speed doesn’t really fix the problem. If there are vibrations, it can still soften your image, but at least the jello won’t be as noticeable. Low shutter speed kind of smooths it out, similar to motion blur. It’s one of the reasons people sometimes say that an ND filter improves jello.

    Jello can be eliminated most of the time if you balance your props, props suppose to come "perfect" from the factory but most don't, the great thing is that BI blades are easy to balance, TRI blades and up is another story :D , try to balance those props and see if you get rid of the jello. those FPV chops are IMPRESSIVE !!! MAESTRO!!!

    It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. I usually shrinktube the Crossfire antenna on a 2.5mm wide long ziptie (Head cut off) with a tube that barely fits over it because of weight from both sides. Then I take a short bit of the next size and put it over the center, where all the cables meet to protect this area. Works beautiful and holds up well up to now. It holds up better than anything I tried with antenna tubes.

    Do you mean a split hd/FPV cam? You could certainly do that and it would save some weight. Your analog FPV wouldn’t be as good though, because those cameras tend to have a soft FPV image (go figure) and they have more latency. But they can still be fun to fly and record some nice footage. If you go that route, I suggest the runcam split3 nano. There is a version where the dvr board is shaped like a whoop FC. Good luck!

    The Insta360 GO (v1) records at 25 FPS. It actually has less to do with the frame rate and more to do with the speed at which the camera can read data from its sensor. A camera that is capable of a high frame rate will often have less jello even when recording at a lower frame rate. It has to do with how much the image changes between the time it starts reading an image from the sensor and the time it finishes. Does that make sense?

  • @MrShutterBug

    @MrShutterBug

    3 жыл бұрын

    I haven't used the Lollipop specifically. In general, yes switching from a dipole (linear polarized) to a CP (circular polarized) antenna can help as long as it matches the polarization on your goggles. The main strength of a CP antenna is that is can help to reject signals from the opposite polarity. If the drone transmits RHCP in an open field, then the goggles will receive an RHCP signal via direct path. But, if there is also a barn nearby, the goggles may also receive an LHCP signal reflected off the barn. Having an RHCP antenna on the goggles will help to accept the direct path and reject the reflected path.

    I think it varies quite a bit. Sometimes it's reasonably quick, especially with the DHL shipping option. However, sometimes it takes them a while to ship it so fast shipping is no guarantee that you'll actually get it quickly.

Has anyone added a vista to this little drone? Does it have enough power on 2s with the added weight of the naked vista??

  • @MrShutterBug

    @MrShutterBug

    The Crux 3 frame is pretty flimsy. I would recommend something stronger since you will have a little extra weight, and thus need a little extra power. It's not just a question of durability. A stiffer frame will probably also have less camera jello (caused by vibration). You could also try the TP3 frame, or the 3" frame that Chris Rosser designed (www.aos-rc.com). If you ever do get your hands on a babytooth frame, I would go with the 3mm version for an HD build.

    @@MrShutterBug thanks for the reply! I went with the AOS T3 frame (Chris Rosser frame) and the FPV cycle 13mm 6350kv motors. I figured I can try them on 2s or 3s with a 85% motor output limit. Thanks again! This build was totally inspired by your DJI Baby Tooth build…I even ordered Tiny LED’s to connect between the motor and flight control board (betafpv 20A AIO).

    For a second I thought you had the GO 2. It also suffers from extreme jello with any kind of high frequency vibration, from a quad, rc car, or even when mounted directly on a bicycle. A shame really because it works flawlessly handheld, and the video quality has been improved a LOT.
