I watched this eight months ago when I uploaded my first video. I had 13 subs and said I'd be consistent. I'm here to update. I now have 1.4k subs and have been releasing a song a week for 4 months now, the growth and support has been incredible. I will manifest my dreams through dedication and hopefully it will inspire others to do the same.

It’s all genuine up till I start marketing. Then it becomes about validation. Then I have to go to war with that desire to be validated with my belief in myself. But it’s hard to find a good artist who isn’t internally conflicted.

Thanks Adam, first I’m just checking in to let you know that I often watch your videos. I even watch them all the way through! Imagine that! Second, this vid really resonates with me. I’m 61 years old. I worked in the in the entertainment industry for over 40 years. Within that industry I had a few different careers. Some years my income might have mostly come from only one of those careers. Other years my income was coming from all of my different professional endeavors. When I was in high school I made the career choice of being a songwriter/recording artist and performer. I didn’t have a clue about record deals, publishing, etc. I did know how to run a band and get paid. I also had balls of steel. The other thing I knew was that I would have to come up with any way possible of getting paid with my abilities. I played guitar, but I was a better drummer. However, I was an even better singer. I also had an extensive theatre background. My mom was a dancer in ballets, Broadway and movies. My dad was a second generation stagehand and his entire family were stagehands. So, I was dancing since I learned to walk and I was backstage on Broadway since my earliest memories. Basically I could sing, dance and act and I understood how that industry worked, both onstage and backstage. I was also totally obsessed with how records were made and the how and why my favorite were who they were. Ok, so I survived and even thrived. My life was an insane roller coaster ride took me so many places I’d never have imagined and I don’t mean I got rich. Hell to the no. I didn’t get a big record deal and become a star. But, I am so rich in experience that I wouldn’t change a thing. I got to do every single thing I dreamed of doing, just not the way I pictured it as a kid. The last 20+ years for me was largely surrounding audio engineering/recording. I was still writing, recording and performing a little, but not much. Ninety five percent of my energies were spent bringing other people’s art to fruition. I retired from NYC’s stagehands union last year with a modest pension and I’m working on my music in my home studio. The life change is fucking huge and I still feel like I’m tripping. A big adjustment is regarding why I now make my art. I spent a lifetime doing it largely to get paid and survive. Now I don’t give a fuck and it’s more challenging than ever because I can do whatever I want. The record industry provided hard boundaries regarding creativity and what was “singable.” A blank canvas with no rules can be very daunting. It can also be very exhilarating. I’m not young anymore and I was trained in an industry that isn’t interested in anything that isn’t young and great to look at. I’m doing some pretty cool work, but I’m a little self-conscious as to how to just be myself publicly regarding my music. I always had to care completely about self presentation. I want to follow through on delivering good music to anyone who will listen. It means presenting the real me, white hair, wrinkles and all. I’m ready to do it and I’m developing my roadmap, so I’m not an idiot doing idiotic things. Thanks for helping out. Your work has great value and I so appreciate your hard work, your passion and commitment. You always get me thinking. Peace & love -Tim

This whole thing takes me back to what i went through, how i quit my job and moved back to my country just to pursue music. I wasted a year until i realized how off balance i was. I gave up my source of income , i could sit and do music as a hobby but never be able to make them into full products because i had nothing to invest. So for me, finding the right balance between both seems to be working now. I think i would love to watch if you did a video on investment, i bet you can talk a lot from your experience and it can make a lot of people realize how important investment is when it comes to pursuing your dreams. That was a great video with a great advise, thanks man

I started playing piano when I was 5 years old. I always had fun making things up on the piano, but they were never really anything more than riffs. When I was 11, I decided I might want to try and write some full pieces for piano. Of course, they weren't great. But at the time I was very proud of what I had done. One day, I figured I'd try and write something with multiple instruments other than piano. Once I did, I continued to do so. Gradually I began to love composing things more and more. Now I'm 16, and have wanted to be a film composer since I was 13. I'm taking all the steps I can to get myself out there. Thanks you for all of your videos Adam. They really give me knowledge regarding how to promote myself and my music.

Lol and what sell 50 pieces of merch or maybe a few disks, good plan, it worked occasionally in the 70's but it does not work anymore. There are no live venues anymore, its getting so many bands have to pay to play at a venue, have to have insurance etc etc etc... so saying just go tour your ass off....lol..lol...llol. If people could actually do that it might still work but many many cities and towns that used to have great music scenes, they are non existent today. maybe you are lucky enough to have a decent music scene locally, great , your really lucky, but you still want to get your music out too more and more people no ? So no just being a great musician is not enough anymore, if nobody hears your great music, what are you doing ? There are so many great musicians, really great bands, great music that never ever gets listened too because the musician does not understand how market their product. if your a musician, you produce music as a product, you need to take this mans good advice seriously and build on it.

@@Graiskye Musicians should make music, managers should take care of the rest. Play in cities with higher education and universities. In the 70s you make the money with the album and tour to promote it. Today you got an album to be able to tour where you make the money. I have seen really good bands perform in front of near empty venues, they got it wrong.

I hear you, the problem is playing good music and performing well live are just starting points. You DO need an online presence and some marketing skill/know-how to make it. If you're lucky enough to get a great management team that can handle all that-great. Most beginners have to handle it themselves, though, and even highly successful musicians spend some of their time with social media. It's just the reality of the industry currently.

The social media and branding age may be today's pragmatism but it's beyond depressing how much the resulting shallow media centric corporate minded computer literate mass market "product" of today absolutely sucks

@@WillMaskellTaylor Yes I agree and Motown was the perfect brand machine, however the enormous talent was undeniably behind the branding. These days, branding becomes an end in itself -the famous for being famous paradigm, where any actual ability to sing, write or play becomes not just secondary but in many cases irrelevant. Hence the enormous dumbing down of music and particularly lyrics. Elvis and the Beatles were genuine artists controlled by svengali management. These days anyone cute with a media savvy image qualifies as an "artist" even if the music is garbage

  • @WillMaskellTaylor

@@martinheath5947 I'd agree to extent, TBH though, I think you could easily compare Elvis to artists today as you described. He was an extremely handsome man who danced rather provocatively. Sure enough he could and was talented, but many chart topping artists have the same amount of talent such as Justin Beiber, who actually can sing and write. I do think that nowadays however, there are countless artists who are really not that's special or talented who are all about branding. I think this will die out soon because people don't buy music anymore, meaning that live gigs are the key to making it. If you can't entertain, if you're crap live it will show. So you do need talent to make it. The Britney Spears and autotune artists are dying out because of this.

Oh the old days... How things have changed.... THATS THE POINT. Things have changed. Its easier to break into the market today than it ever has been. What hasn't changed is that if you want to win you have to play the game. You just have to know the game you're playing.

I'm binging all your videos - thank you Adam! I've only JUST started posting on instagram, youtube, and sharing it on facebook (haven't made a "page" yet, just sharing among friends). Funny enough, my first two videos proved your EXACT point about showing your face, yourself! In my first video, the only thing in the shot was my hands playing piano (even though I was singing and should have showed my face). In my second video, I challenged myself to get over my face and learn to love it so I included ME playing guitar and singing. Comparing the first 24 hours of both videos (posted a week-ish apart), I got almost the same amount of engagement in my second video (with my face lol) than what took a week for my first video to reach (w/o my face, also less popular song). I'm very much in the process, so I hope to let that be a learning opportunity for me to become my own #1 fan. Thanks again for the solid advice!!
