Many clients come to me, too embarrassed to talk about lichen sclerosus. Today, I am hoping that my guest and I can remove some of the taboo around the topic, as well as share some help for those struggling with the condition (and others like it).
My guest today, Dr. Jessica Drummond, DCN, CNS, PT, NBC-HWC, Founder of the Integrative Women’s Health Institute, is passionate about empowering women who struggle with chronic pelvic pain conditions and hormonal imbalances, and female athletes, and supporting women’s health and wellness professionals globally.
She has two decades of experience working with women using physical therapy and functional nutrition, and teaching her colleagues, from an integrative, evidence-based, and conservative perspective.
Join us as we talk about lichen sclerosus, as well as lichen planus and lichen simplex chronicus, three skin conditions that typically affect vulvar skin.
SHOW NOTES:
• What is lichen sclerosus, and is that different from lichen planus, or lichen simplex chronicus?
• Are these infections or autoimmune conditions?
• How can physical therapy help women with these conditions?
• Are there nutrition or lifestyle strategies that can help women with these conditions?

3:20 I'm a 35 year old man and I've Lichen Sclerosis. I've symptoms for more than 6 months. I've other autoimmune conditions for more than 20 years. After getting diagnosed with LS i started to find resources online. Just like this platform all the platforms i found to gather knowledge about this condition are made for woman. Initially i was confused that maybe i am the only man in this world having LS, which is a bit frustrating tbh. I'm still grateful to have all the information available online and other people sharing their experiences which is great.

Durring recent flare-up, and absense of steroid cream, Burt's Bees' Hand Salve provided complete relief from itching and pain. Alrhough gynecologist instructed to use only water in region, Burt's Bees' Gentle Face Cleaner with aloe provided increased comfort and relief.

I was diagnosed with bladder cancer in April. I went through BCG treatments that ended in August. Went to my Gynecologist in Sept and was diagnosed with Lichen Sclerosis. Just learning about the disease. I am sure the stress of my cancer diagnosis didn’t help my stress level. I am wondering if the BCG might have something to do with my LS.

Jennifer, when using clobetasole twice daily for a few months, is it possible to break the skin down to where it causes more issues with itching, burning, rawness? How do you help rejuvenate the skin and help the symptoms to go away?

I have recently been diagnosed with LS. For 1 month now using the Clobetasol only once at nighttime for a month. Then I’m supposed to go to once every other night for a month. Then down to twice a week for a month. If LS rears its ugly head when reducing ointment then I was told to go back to once daily again. I believe I used too much and just spent a weekend with fully red raw inflamed vag & inner thighs. So I have used less in amount and had my pelvic floor therapist show me exactly where to place the ointment. I also have Levator Ani Sydrome thus began pelvic floor treatments recently too.
